<£imun« pispatclj, AUGUSTA. GEO : V'QUie. O’CLOCK P. M. MIR. 15, IMS j Notice to Advertisers. Advertisements for the Evkni.vu Dispatch must | be handed in by eleven o'clock in the forenoon, in * order to appear the same day. The heavy pres sure of advertisements upon the columns of our paper will not admit of their reception alter the hour named. LOCALMATTEE S. Pnr.orumn of the Itussinu War. This exhibition will open to-night at Concert Hall. The Baltimore Daily Sun says: “This splendid and spirited affair has become a sort of necessity with our citizens. Everybody goes to see it and everybody is profuse in its praise. It is one of the most deserved ly popular exhibitions we have ever had in Baltimore. The lecturer, abound ing with information, and delivered with distinctness, though comparative ly brief as a historiette, has yet convey ed to thousands a better idea of the war than they ever had before." [communicated.] Young Men** Christian Association. Mr. Editor:—l have been looking, j and shall yet for a while look to the | above Association, with hopes that it j may accomplish to some extent, some of the uses which its name and position in the confidence of the community would seem to indicate. But while I am willing to acknowledge that f i “Prayer is tiic simplest form ol’speech That human lips can try; Prayer the sublimest strains tint reach The Majesty on high,” I believe there are other duties we owe to God as his children, which we can understand when we remember that we are all the children of one com mon Father. In this city, if anywhere in this coun try, is there room and requirement for j Christian Associations. And in order; to illustrate the language I am using, j you will permit me to instance a case, j and those who are now so replete with, designs for the elevation of young men | may draw their own influence, and! make their own application. Two years ago a young man-of educa , tion, accustomed to move iu good soci ety and to associate with good company, i was employed to come to this city in a : business as respectable and requiring as; much talent, energy and skill, as any ! other which could be named. He came in contact w ith the Mtizensoi the place, i made friends among them, was respect--; ed for his deportment, and felt that al though his antecedents might not be; generally known, stiil his appearance, j attention to business and all that goes! to make up good citizenship would I commend him to a place in soeie- j ty where he could cultivate the social | affections and the acquaintance of the; fair and the virtuous. How his desires, j and the requirements of his nature, in common with all mankind, for assoeia-) tion witli kindred spirits, be they good I or evil, were requited, will he under stood, when I say that ho has never, up| to the present time, with a single excep-j tion, been invited to the homes or fire sides of his friends. His acquaintance with the fathers and brothers did not in troduce him to the sisters and daugh ters. Call not this a solitary case.— They can he conjured up by the hun dreds. Man is a social being ; lie requires se rial relations ; and who cannot see that if they are denied in the one direction they will be sought iu the other. This state of things may be the result of self ish exclusiveness, or it maybe stupidity, and in either ease, I commend the hints thus given, to the consideration of the Young Men’s Christian Association. Cimoxos. | SOHgltlll' lit LiUlst. j A number of citizens of Philadelphia have petitioned the Legislature to puss a j law prohibiting free negroes from com ing into that State. They say that the. are subjected to trouble, inconvenience and expense by such influx, including old negroes, set free by tlieir masters, fugitive slaves and other worthies* darkies, most of whom become a public charge or a prey upon individual chari ty’ As Incident or the Revival.— ln Mr. Beecher's church, lirooklyrreat the close of the morning service a collection was taken for the benefit of the poor in the congregation. Among tiro audience was Mrs. Fremont, ("Our Jessie”) who, happening to have no money in her pocket, as the plate was passed, took from her finger a heavy gold ling and threw it in as the cnly contribution she was able at the time to make. Fun should be cultivated as a fine art for it is altogether a fine thing. Who ever knew a "funny man” to be a bad one. On the contrary is not he nine times in ten, generous, humane, social and good? To be sure he is. Fun—it is a great thing. It smooths the rough places of life, makes the disposition as sweet and rosy as a fresh maiden’s kiss, scatters sunshine and flowers where vei we go, gives the world a round jolly countenance, makes all the girls as pretty as June roses, and mankind oil ’ of the best familes out. We go in for fun. The man who won’t cultivate it must keep a good sized half rod be tween us. —.——.... Mr. T. S. Piggot, proprietor of the Carolina Times, announced the Buspen *fon of that paper for awhile, Pa.-son Brownlow, of the Knoxville Whig says that "if he is denied the privilege of going to Heaven after death, his second choice is Baltimore. , From the Knoxville Register. TO MY MOTHER, BY CAKRIK. Thou art growing old, ilear mother. Thy bloom ol youth has lied— „ And the frosts of man > winters Has fell noon thy h ad. lint thy book of life has pages That will forever glow, With the brilliant huo of happiness Traced in “the long ago,’’ And there are closely written page 3 Os many a weary night, When the tide of affliction met thee And cast aside the light. When the hand of death had severed Affection*B golden chain, And the links of earth cuuld never Be bound together ag in. You have had your sky encircled With ninny a e oud of gloom, While the dowers of friendship never Imparted their perfume. And the leaves of coldness fluttered Across the path you tr>d S But mother, they were put aside By the loving hand of God. For a time thy heart was gladdened, The twilight of thy soul Grew brgliter, faded, passed away, A grief-worn, written scroll. Years wont by—and the chastening rod Had bowed thee down ogai And bitter drops of sorrow fell On all of us with pain. On thy pure brow disease had lain Her stern, relentless hand, As if to grasp ami bear away The jewel to another laud.* But the angels bore a message, That God to us had sent; They whispered “peace, lookup and hope/’ And back to heaven they went. then again was beautiful, And found the “ old arm chair,” Thy children came and knelt To olfer up a prayer. For thy feeble smile at evening, Fit up our quiet room, And stealing down within our hearts, It cheered away our gloom. Thou art growing old. dear mother, But still within thiuw eyes I love to gaze, for there I llnd A light of splendor lies. And as I stand beside tl ee here, And stroke thy silken hair. I look to heaven, and, 0! I hope I'll meet thee, mother, there Knoxville, February 22d. irtSJus m—auiiw ——————————i Augusta prices Current. W UOLKSALK PRICES.
