We had only time on yesterday to allude to the annual parade of this com pany, taking leave of them at the Bridge, to which they were escorted by j the Montgomery Guards. The com pa-j ny then proceeded, under the command of Lieut Lakus, to Shultz's Hill, when; the exercises of the day commenced by i shooting for the two company prizes, a Medal and Plume, which were won re-1 spectively by privates D. C. Murphy! and Sullivan. The prizes presented by the Honorary members w6re next con- : tended for, with the following result: Ist. Prize, a Silver Coffee Pot, was' won by Private Hamlin. lid. A Silver Sugar Bowl, won by! Sergeant Flynn. 3d. A Silver Goblet, won by Private Davidson. 4th. A Pair of Silver Salt-cellars, j borne off by Private Mcbpiiy. The offi cers of the Battalion then contended for prizes—the first, a Silver Tea Pot being won by Lieut. Jacobus. The se-; cond by Capt. Kirkpatrick, both of the Washington Artillery. The shoot ing was characterized by a zealous emu lation to excel, and the best of feeling, and exhibited some excellent shooting. The Officers, Honorary Members, Com paiy, and Invited Guests then proceed ed t] dimly, where the following regu lar pasts were drank, amid rounds of applause: Georgia:—Our adopted State and home —to whose laws wo are indebted for pro tection—in whose enterprise we have found employment, and from whose citizens a hospitable welcome. May Georgia give us a chance in the column of attack “ when the time comes. 1 ’ The pious memory of the Apostle of Ireland, Saint Patrick, whose history il lustrates that Charity that “endureth all things.” May we successfully imi tate his Christian benevolence, temper ance and moderation. America: —The temple of rational Lib erty—the sanctuary of the bppressou the vindicator of the rights of the hu man race. America: ~ The home of our adoption, of our love—may the privilege yet be ours of proving our devotion by defend ing her Hag. Ireland /—Our dear, native land ; our eyes first opened on her sunny green : our ears first heard the iuufcic of her mountain streams; our boyish hearts tlxy-o palpitated in the first dream of love ; the Jirst struggle of early man hood was .-n her field ; and in her bosom repose the ashes of our forefathers. Dear Erin, our mother, on this, your festal day, wo greet you with these sa < red memories. The President of Ok United Stales :—The j representative of the only true majesty on earth—the self-controlling power of the American mind. These were followed by volunteer sentiments of a varied and sparkling character. After dinner the Honorary members shot for prizes presented by the active members, with the following result: Ist. Prize, Silver Coffee Pot, won by Mr. Xeir. 2d. A Silver Cream Jug, won by D. C. j Murphy. 3d. A Silver Sugar Bowl, won by J. D. Smith. 4th. A pair of Silver Salt cellars, won by Mr. Doktic. Having spent a delightful day, the! company returned to their armory and v. i. re dismissed. ———. < ints s»y titc Georgia Horst. From a statement furnished to the ( by the officers of tile Georgia Bailroad, we learn that the quantity of cotton, flour and grain ship ped over this road from the Ist to the 12th of March is as follows ; Gotten, 10,011 bales ; Flour, 3,701 sacks; Grain 39,453 sacks. Tile Rubsiaii War. The views of the Russian War now on exhibition in this city are attracting large and appreciating audiences. The Constitutionalist of this morning, says of it. The battle scenes are finely presen ted and the Clash of cannon mingled witli volleys of musketry and the spirit Stirling music of the drum and trumpet, goto make up a scene highly descriptive ofabattle. T1 e paiutingsare superb, end are presented as accurate copies from drawings taken ou the spot. The snow storm, and the tornado on laud arid sea, are splendidly represented by means of mechanical cuntiivanees. The exhibition closes with the storm ing and destruction of Sebastopol, ti fine chemical and mechanical dioraa.a,, These illustrations are described by the lecturer-in a pointed and excellent manner; and the entire exhibition is accompanied by a brass band, forming au entertainment well worthy a visit. Go and see it. It will be exhibited every night this week, and on Saturday, \ at three o'clock, P. M. Tho Topeka Constitution seems like- j Iv to die a natural death. An address of a joint committee of the Topeka Leg islature says, for wa it of a quorum, the Legislature h.as adjourned, and the members refer back to the people the question whether the Constitution is dead. The decision will probably be— very dead. Augusta Artisans. ; The Charleston papers contain the I following notices of two gentlemen 1 | well known in Augusta, one a talented [artist, and the other a skillful me- 1 chanic : At Augusta, (Ga.) a few days since, says the Inventor, our attention was call- j ed to a Vibrating Steam-Hammer, in- ( vented by Tlios. Sumner, of Augusta, , and patented June 27th, 1854. Theim- . provelnent consists in tho arrangement , of the hinged guide-frame, which car ries the hammer, in relation to the an vil, by supporting the guide-frame on a trunnion below, situated at the back of I or on one side of the anvil, and at the same level as the work under operation on the anvil. The hammer is furnish ed with a cam which operates tiie cut- , oft in the ascent and allows the ham- , iner to fali, the steam being put on again by the, operation of the hammer Jas it strikes the anvil. It is perfectly self-acting, and the stroke may be regu lated light or heavy by a hand lever which cuts off the steam at any desired ! elevation of the hammer. We think it tho best steam hammer wo have ever seen, and hope for its general introduc tion. Mr. Sumner desires the co-operation of some person having capital to invest, ; to aid him in bringing his invention be fore the public. The admirers of the refined andclass ic art of rendering the canvas glowing I and warm with the living tints of na | cannot fail to be struck with an I admirable portrait of one of our well ! known citizens,—whose familiar face is fdail y seen in our streets, —now at Cour j teuay’s in Broad-street. The picture, which is a lifelike likeness, is from the ! studio of Mr. Hubert Boggs, a native of our sister State of Georgia, who, hav ing passed three years in Italy, is now ou a visit to his relatives in this city.— j We understand that Mr. Boggs lias de ! voted particular attention to the art of coloring, so as to represent nature in true and unmistakeble tints. Os this. < we have all admirable illustration in the portrait alluded to above, in which ac ! curacy of drawing with a faithful repre sentation of color, imparts a lifelike character to his subject. It al ,vays affords us pleasure to no tice the development of native talent and genius. His native State, and in deed the South, may well be proud of so worthy a son. Such jewels deserve to be prized and fostered, as they cannot fail to reflect honor upon the soil that : gave them birth. Mr. Boggs may be found at his Stu ! dio, in King-street, apposite to the Vic : toria Hotel, where be will be pleased to receive the calls of those who wish beautiful pictures and life-like portraits. manure Ulnxlmi* At a late meeting of the Farmer's Club of the American Institute, Mr. T. W. Field read a paper oil manures, in which lie said : The whole subject of manure may be stated in this proposition. 1. Manure docs not waste so long as it is iinfermonted, or undissolved, and those conditions may be effected by dry ing saturation. 2. Fresh manure is unfit for food for plants. 4. Fermenting manure, in contact with inert matter, has the power ol neutralizing vicious properties, such as . the tonic acid of peat, and making it a; ' fertilizer. 4. Manure wastes io two ways—the escape of gas, and the dissolving of its soluble salts. 5. The creative power of manure, mixed with other substances, is ca -1 pable of multiplying its value many ' times. 0. The value of manure to crops is j in proportion to its divisibility through | the soil. This golden value of farming | should be small quantities of manure thoroughly divided and intermingled witli the soil. — Later from Utah. St. Louis, March 15th. — Mr. Hartwell, Secretary of Utah, has arrived in this city. He left the campon 26th of Janu ary. The troops were in a comfortable con | dition and in good health. Only four ! deaths had occurred since their arri val. He thought that an entrance to Salt Lake Valley could be effected by a route ! 100 miles longer, but offering no obstruc tions to the trains. The Indians give assurance of friend j ship. Mr. Hartwell saw no snow on the route and believed the grass would start j unusually early. THIRTY-FIFTH CONGRESS. FIRST SESSION. Washington, March 15, 1858. SENATE. In the Senate, reports, memorials, &c. were introduced. Mr. Broderick made a personal explain i ation, and branded the New Vork Her- \ aids correspondent as a falsifier of; facts. 1 Mr. Wade resumed the discussion of; the Kansas question, followed by Mr.; Mason. The Senate will probably be engaged in the discussion of this subject the ■ greater portion ol' the night. HOUSE. Mr. English introduced a resolution ‘ of enquiry relative to the Louisville and Portland Canal, with a view of re ducing the tolls. I’assed. Several private bills were introduced and referred. Mr. Wright, of Ga., introduced the ! Homestead Bill. i . Mr. Smith, of Tenn., tiie Pacific Sail , road Bill. A resolution was then passed caEing for information in relation to the Lou j isville and Portland canal, with a view of reducing tolls and securing the in terest to tho Government. The House then adjourned. SpirU KajilUngs Is Paris. All Paris society is limning wild after ; s certain Baron dc Uuldenstubbe and ’ his sister, to be equal, if they do not surpass, Mr. Hume in the in fluence they possess over the spirits of ! the air, and in the facility, frequency, ; and marvelousness of their commuoica j tions with them. It seems that “Red | Gauntlet” reveals tothem, by means of j direct writings, a host of startling , events, prophecies, &e.; and, in short, the mind is more than overturned in that direction in Paris. Among other ; miracle-workers is a Moldavian prince, whose magnetic powers are such that he has only to present a flower to any one i to subject them instantly to his influ- j ence.— Liverpool Times. i Not to lie Outtlone. An Englisbanan and a Yankee were! recently disputing, when the former; : sneeringly remarked, *■ Fortunately, the j Americans could go no further than the. j Pacific shore.” The Yankee scratched: his prolific brain for an instant, and thus! triumphantly replied : “ Why, good ! gracious! they’re already levelling the| Rocky Mountains, and carting the dirt j: out West. 1 had a lettev last week! ] from my cousin, who is living 200 miles! West of the Pacific shore—on made land. The Englislftnan gave in. i Itrnil Them. One of our exchanges justly remarks, that those who fail to read the adver tisements in newspapers often lose more than they imagine. Advertisements are printed to be read just as much as any other item of news, and it is just as essential to read them. There is not an advertisement printed that is not of im portance to some one. Nothing speaks more clearly of a man’s prosperity in business than the manner in which he ] advertises. Don't fail to read them.— Nantucket Enquirer. In small doses it is Alterative or Laxative; in large dories it acts generally as a mild purgative —with some as an active purgative. In some : cases no perceptible action on the bowels is ex perienced, yet in Liver Complaints, or in Dis . easesarising from an Impure state of the Blood, its continued use causes a marked improvement in the general health. As an alterative or laxative, it has been found useful in Const pation of tiie Bowels, Jaundice, Bilious Fever, Fever and Ague, sick Headache, Dizziness, various Female Complaints, Chronic j Affections of the Liver, Sec- ndery Syphilis, and | Syphiloid Diseases, Scrofulous Affections, Sores, ■ Ulcers, Blot lies, Cutaneous Eruptions or t >- eases of tiie .Skin, and alTother diseases in which I .Sarsaparilla or alterative meJi iu -s aroindi-j eatod. That it acts upon the Liver, may be known i .from the fact that in Jaundice or cases of Bilious-' cess it causes (ire© bilious evacuation-’, readily j removes unnatural yellow tinge about tho eyes, and upon the skin, and improves the health and spirits. j hose who have tried this Alterative for As- j flections of the Live , have found that it effects i a cu* o naturally and gradually, by improving the j health, and that but little or no other medicine is neevissary in these affections. Its healthy action on the Liver and purifying’ effect upon the blood, made it a great preventive; ■ f.sickness. For children, this is generally all j the purgative that is necessary to be given, and' as often as otherwise, is all ill’ medicine that is \ necessary to be given, especially.*/) those troub- I bl(,d with worms, or a debilitated state of health. A preparation of Sarsaparilla, known to be good, is greatly needed, to keep the liver healthy - and the blood pure.
