Savannah. I From the Savannah Republican, of this ; morning, we condense the following ac-! count of the escape of the Adriatic , and ; her adventures up to the time of her arrival in Savannah: The American bark Adriatic, which ; became famous from her disastrous col lision with the French steamer Lyonnais, j in November, 1856, and still more an object of interest from her recent sei a zin cs by the French authorities at Mar seilles, her confiscation by the Court of Admiralty, and her subsequent escape, arrived safely at this pert at an early hour yesterday. Ibe circumstances attending the col lision with the steamer Lyonnais, are already familiar to the public. Capt. Durham is very positive that it grew out of no fault on the part of hisV>wn vessel, but resulted, as he alleges, from culpable mismanagement by the ofiicers of the steamer. The judgment of con fiscation was rendered by the Imperial Court of Aix in December last, and as soon as a copy was served on Capt a Dur ham, believing that it was impossible, in the excited state of the public mind in France, to obtain justice, he resolved to make his escape if possible, and place the whole matter in the hands ol ‘ ills Government. Os course lie had to resort to stratagem to accomplish his purpose. He had her caulked all round for about five feet above the water’s edge, under the pretext that she was so open, she would sink right there in the har bor. What provisions they got, were put on board another vessel and from thence transferred to the Adriatic du ring the night. The crew was alsu shipped for another vessel, and subsc queiitly taken on board the Adriatic, when they were so much intoxicated as not to be conscious of what was going on. Capt. D. commenced preparations to leave on the evening of the Bth, his force consisting of Capt. —, two mates and a boy. liie vessel lay in the mid dle tier, with both anchors ahead and moored with a haw. er astern. The ves sel ahead was made last to the chum, and when the Adriatic slipped they id go the other vessel; and when the Cap tain awoke and found himself audit,, he cursed the d— d Yankees bitterly. The crew were got on hoard oy four o’clock on the morning of the the htii. When the Adriatic got abreast ot the guard ship, her boat came oft and de manded the fort-pass of the former.— (’apt. D. when asked for his pass, replied “piciiez garde la, and threw the officer a bit of paper with two sous wrapped up in it. 'Hie paper and money •however, went over the* boat and into the water. The officer then inquired for the myno of the vessel, when Capt. D. replied that she was the American ship Luna, that had cleared the day be fore. The Adriatic then proceeded on her way. She arrived at Spezzia on the morn ing of the 19th of January, and an chored with the kedge, having cut loose both anchors and left them at the wluul in Marseilles. Having no bill of health, the Sardinian authorities would not per mit her to land. Capt. D. then went ashore himself, to the patrique office, where he met the American Consul, who informed him that intelligence ol his escape had reached there and that the French Government had telegraph ed to all the ports-in the Mediterranean to stop the vessel in whatever port she might be found. Soon utter her arrival, orders came from Turin to seize tlieves sel, and the officers actually placed a gun boat under her stern, with two gun* mounted, having received orders to lire should any attempt be made by the Captain of the Adriatic to move from the spot. Col. Long, the U. S. Storekeeper at Spezzia, kindly furnished the vessel witn all she wanted. Just as she got hei provisions and water on board, there came on a fresh blow' from the north ward, and the vessel was riding by the kedge and forty live fathoms of chain, with one of the chain boxes filled with stones to back it, and a hawser bent to the other chain box. •*' The vessel kept drifting until Capt. D. was compelled to run a hauser ashore to the lazaretto, where he made out to hold her, until he went to town and got his papers, lieturning to the bark, he put to sea. The day following the Adriatic boar ded the ship Elizabeth Dennison, from whom she got moie provisions and an anchor. The voysge from Maderia to;tile Uni ted Slates was a lo.ig and tedious one. she having encountered, alternately, calms and headwinds, nearly through >ut the passage. The crev finally ex hausted all their provisions except a small quantity of beef, and it became necessary f or the ship to make the near est American port, (Savannah,) which she reached in safety, as be ore stated.
