From an interview with his Agent this morning, we learn tiiat the lirst aeries of Lectures by Prof. 0. 8. Fowi.kh, , of New York, will be given at Masgnic flail, on Monday evening next. The subject of these Lectures is ‘ Life—its Laws, Organs, Faculties and Improve ment,” as taught by Phrenology and i Physiology. TlTelron Steamboat Company’s steam er Augusta, left this morning. The steamer IV. H. Stark is expected on Monday morning. Pure Imported Liquors. We acknowledge the receipt of sam ples of Cognac Brandy, and London Dock Port, from Dr. T. P. Fokoaety, who has just imported a supply through the Custom House in this city. In ad dition to selecting through his Agent, from the original pacages, he lias ana lyzed the liquors and finds them fleer from adulteration. Wc can therefore recommend any of our friends who need “ something bracing ” for the approach ing warm weather, to his Drug Store, as the place to find it free from villain ous compound. Chinese Suignr Cane Seed. The value of the Chinese Sugar Cane, as a crop, both for purposes of forage, ai well as for Syrup, has been satisfac torily tested, we believe, by our agricul tural friends all over the country.— Those in want of a pure article of seed for planting will find it at the store of Fleming & Rowland. It is now about the season for planting it. Wm. 11. Goudilcli'H K»tal>liMtimciif. We took a stroll through the extensive swish. Blind and Building establishment of thrs enterprising gentleman on yes terday evening, and confess ourself surprised at the extent and perfection of his facilities for dispatching business. In 1834 Mr. G. started business on the vornerof the lot lie occupies, where his residence now stands, in a little shop made by running posts into tin* ground and covered in the rudest manner. At lirst he had nothing but a circular saw | and a turning lathe, which he worked I by hand. At length he got a horse! power, and about 1843, bis business hav ing gradually increased, he determined ! to get an engine, ami introduce more; labor saving machinery. His friends j remonstrated—thinking it a visionary, progressive idea that would min him. Mechanics in the city were indignant, believing tiiat all these Yankee inven tions would run them out of employ ment. But he Anally secured aid from some of our capitalists, after making; them pretty secure, and got a small en gine—and was the first to tit up such an establishment in the State. Busi ness increased year by year—his engine was inadequate to do the business- un til 1849, when lie was burned out, loos ing $15,000 or $20,000. -By this linn* the incredulous had changed their minds, and capital was crowded upon him. to refit. Ho immediitely pur chased more extensive machinery < i all kinds, to which he has been constantly adding all of the now and valiiahk improvements of the day, besides great v !y extending his grounds, until we now find his establishment extending from Reynolds street to the river cov ering an .mu of 700 by 200 feet and amonghis machinery wc find the fol lowing : 2 Woodworth planing machines ; 3 Daniel's Planers; 7- Circular saws ; 2 Moulding machines ; 2 flash machines ; Geer’s Irregular Planer *, 1 .Scroll saw: 2 Grooving Machines; 1 Morticing Ma -chine ; 3 l oot Morticing Machines ; 1 tiiat Planer ; 2 Turning Lathes. The whole establishment is conven iently arranged for the dispatch of busi ness, and employs, in connection with jobs in various places, from 100 to 300 men : at this time about 150 are en gaged, many of. w 10m are those who have learned the lia le with him, and inany are foreigners. Mr. Goodrich is now a well known contractor throughout this State and Carolina, and his work exhibits a degree of taste and workman ip nowhere*exec* led. His success is a forcible illustration of the result of in iinstry and energy ; not only advanciue the posse sor, but diffusing bor gji among all classes of society, Mr. Johnathan Bryan, venei a*»!e citizen of Charleston, died in thui city on Thursday, at the age of eighty three years. Emigration to Nicaragua. The subject of emigration to Nicara gua will very soon attract unusual in terest and attention in the South. Ala bama, by her legislature at its hast ses sion, has inode a starling point by char tering the “ Mobile and Nicaragua Steamship Company;” and from this beginning, we shall witness, at an early day, a constant stream of emigration thither of southern citizens—not of ad venturers or lillibusters. but of peaceful and quiet people, with a view to better theii own condition, and theiebynid in developing the rich and varied resources of one of the loveliest and most fertile portions of Spanish America. This can be done, too, without any apprehension of interference on the part of our own 4i}' any other government. As* to Nica fitaa, there is no law of that State for bidlW foreigners of any country to en ter it*i territory. Americans may go ihitheiVfor many purposes—for trade, tor mining, &c. Nor is it necessary to h ive thewermission of Nicaraguan au thorities Ii order to land at San Juan <icl Nortel The whole territory, indeed is open to louthern .emigration. Louis iana has j Ist taken steps to second the lead of Ajfibama. The Senate Commit tee on If tide ral Relation ■* has made a reporjf to the legislature, urging among / other desirable measures, thearfogation of the Clayton Buhver Uvrify. nml the repeal of the neutrality laws of 1818. But, for want of space, we must defer further remarks until this evening or to-moirow. In the meantime, we publish the following ar ticle from the New Orleans Crescent : The Albania legislature, at its late session chartered the “ Mobile and Nic araguan Steamship Company,” enabling it to commerce business on a capital of live thousand dollars , and with the privilege of increasing to three hundred t housand, and enough stock has be;-n al ready taken to secure the organization under the charter. The company have the right to build and own steamships to run from any port in the Atlantic to any port in the Gulf or Caribbean, from any port in the Atlantic to any port in the Atlantic, and from any port in the Gulf or Carribean to any port in the Gulf or Carribean, with the privilege of employing auxiliary vessels. A steam er will, we understand, be started by the company from Mobile, for San Juan del Norte, on or about the first of June next, and it is their intention to put the prices of passages at a low rate, in order, to favor emigration to Central America. The men engaged in this enterprise are men of capital, energy, and resolu tion. While they are desirious of en larging their commercial operations and of adding to the trade and impor tance of the city of Mobile, they are al so thoroughly devoted to southern in terests and institutions, and regard our own peculiar form cf society as that best suited for renovating the tropical re gions of this continent. As merchants, they are not willing that New York capitalists shall gather all the fruits oL Isthmian trade. As sourthern mer f, they are anxious to get the start of the Northern Central American Coloniza tion Company, and to prevent Aboli tion fanaticism from geting the first foothold in Nicaragua. As philanthrop ist , they seek some rational method by which to heal the social and political disorders of Spanish America, and to re store the choicest portion of the contin ent to the uses and purposes of civiliza tion. burely, objects such us these are de serving the support and encouragement not only of the Alabama Legislature, but also of the Federal Government of j the United States. True, the present I Administration has so far shown little ! disposition to encourage southern supre macy in Nicaragua, and has, to all in dents ad purposes, endorsed the acts iof an American Commodore Influenced Iby Black Republican sentiments and j European prejudices. But, at the same time, the President has declared so ful ly in favor of peaceful emigration to Central America, that it is now impossi ble for him to oppose such a move ment. It matters not, so far as the organiza tion and operations of the “ Mobile and Nicaragua Steamship Company ’’ are ;concerned, whether the Yrissarri treaty is ratified or not. Os course the compa ny will take passengers for San Juan del Norte without inquiring the ob jects of their trips thither, it is of lit tle consequence to them as merchants, so their passage money is paid, what the passengers do after their arrival in Nicaragua. [But for the benefit of those desirous of emigrating to Central America, we may stale that there arc colonization laws in Nicaragua not de nied by the Martinez or any other gov ernment. It is true that the old laws are *:ot as lave ruble to emigrants as were the decrees issu-d under the ad minis* R ation of Don Patricio Rivas ; and the laws being general in their nature. American citizens have as much right as other persons to take advantage if their provisions. J The country is, it is true, i » a very unsettled condition, and in a few weeks civil war may be again wasting tin- is thmus. Recent advices Indict-. that the old parties, Legitimist and Demo cratic, are more embittered in their quarrels than ever. The late decree of Martinez aimed ostensibly at Walker and his associates, is really a blow at the native Democrats, for it annuls all contracts and cancels all debts created by the Provisional Government of Hon Francisco Casiilhin. But in spite of the petty feuds which desolate the country there are regions remote from strife where the peaceful colonist may settle and build up a home for himself and his posterity. Such are the districts of < iiontales and Malaga!pa, and the eas tern tdbpes of the main range of the Cordilleras. We hope the advantages which these regions offer to the sett ler will not be overlooked by the hardy prioneers of the South and West, and that the steamers of the “Mobile and Nicaragua Steamship Company” may be crowded with emigrants to the land us enchantment which lies between the ! *ikand the Caribbean.
