Tlte C'orjutttc. ,
By reference to another column, it 1
will be seen that this work of art will 1
be on exhibition in our city for a short \
time. From the reputation which it i
has acquired in Charleston, and other
places, we conclude that it is a work of ,
uncommon merit, and worthy the pa- ;
trouage of lovers of the noble art of
sculpture.
. Tlic Weather.
f i
For the last two days the weather ,
has been very cold and disagreeable.
During most of the day yesterday we
had a cold rain, butthewind and clouds
we believe prevented any frost this
morning. It is now clear and cold, ;
with a prospect for a frost to-niglit. ,

Young Men’s Christian Association.
Mr. Editor:— l was sorry that so tri
fling an excuse as the appearance of a '
little rain should have prevented an
“overflowing house” from listening to
the truly excellent sermon of Kev. Dr. '
Wilson, before the Young Men’s Chris
tian Association, at St. John's Church,
on last Sunday evening.
Would that all the youth of our coun
try might treasure up in their hearts
the great and instructive principles of |
this eloquent and impressive address.
The subject, that no man, however j
brilliant, polished or cultivated in the j
world of letters—however extensive in
his researcl-.es and discoveries, or re
nowned in the arts and sciences, or dis
tinguished in political or military
achievements, can be truly great without
an acquaintance with tlte “Man of Cal
vary,” is similar to the theme of a dis j
course recently delivered in Cincinnati, j
by the Rev. Edward Hitchcock, of;
Amherst, the eminent Geologist, (text
from Hoseaflth— 3d) tlte object of which l
sermon was to illustrate the superiority j
of the attainments of the Christian j
over the man who does not avail him
self of the blessings of a true and pure |
religion, which are a knowledge of the
reality and power of communion with!
God, and the world to come—of the |
power of the Scriptures—of the power
of prayer- -of the true phylosophy of
religion—of the comparative value of
this world.
The Christian will act under the in- ;
fluenee of disinterested benevolence j
will know how to interpret the Divine i
Providences, and will know the naturo j 1
aud power of faith. The speaker, in
conclusion, applying the subject, allu-!
ded to the superiority of such knowl-j
edge and the insignificance of all litera-1
turc and science when compared witli
it ; designating this knowledge as a|
test of Christian character, and growth j
in grace, and showed wherein tire sub- j
ject afforded an important lesson to the
skeptic, who could not distinguish be
tween morality and religion ; and clos- j
ed by depicting how natural and easy
such Christain knowledge made the j :
transition from life on earth to life in
heaven* Stranger.
An English Tragedy.— Lerwick,Eng- i
land, has been shocked bv tire murder
of a wife, her two sons, and a daughter j
and the suicide of the murderer. Itap- •
pears that between six and seven o’clock ■
in the morning of the 26th inst., loud
cries of “ Murder” were heard to pro J
ceed from the house of Mr. I’eter Wil- j
. liamson, Merchant and Shipping Agent,
So. 1, Fox-lane. The only person who ,
seems at first to have heard the alarm, j
was a carpenter employed at an adjoin- j
ing shop, hut lie was so frightened that
he was unable to go to the house alone. |
He eventually obtained the assistance of
Mr. Dickson, superintendant of police,
who upon entering the premises, found
Mrs. Williamson lying in one of the j
rooms with her throat frightfully cut.
She was alive, but did not survive more
than half an hour. The bodies of two
of the children were found in another
room, their heads having been battered
in with a large hammer. In an adjoin
ing apartment were the bodies of a lit
tle boy two years of age and father.—j
The latter had in his hand a razor, and
and by his side were lying a large knife
and the hammer. The father s head
was nearly served from his body.
The Senate Commitee on Commerce
has decided that it would he unwise to j
prosecute the improvement of rivers and j
harbors borrowing the money, and, as
the treasury was not in a condition to
furnish the means, it was inexpedient
to report in favor of such improvements. :
The report wan unanimous.
“Read the biographies of our great and
good men and women,” says an ex. :
■•Not one of them had a fashionable
mother. They nearly all sprung from I
plain, storngminded women, who had
as little to do with fashions as with the
changing of clouds.”

Plight hundred and fifty disaffected i
Mormons have been all owed by Brigham 1
Young to leave for California.
What the Mormons will Do.
In a letter from C. H. Bosset, dated
Salt Lake City, Feb, 4, to a relative in
Michigan, and published in the Detroit
Advertiser, we find the following :
“ I have not space in a short letter to
say much about our prospects and de
termination. We have resi -ed, and
every hand has been raised .... heaven
to sanction the resolution, that if
we are closely pressed by our foes, we
will burn our habitations and fences,
and cut down every tree in the valley
and lay waste our fields, and our ene-!
mies shall have the satisfaction of gaz- \
ing on a scene of blackened desolation; t
while we with our families shall retire
to the mountain fastnesses where dra-1
goons cannot possibly follow. There
are recesses in the Rocky Mountains so
impregnable by nature that they can be
as easily defended as were the Straits of
Thermopylae, Indeed I have penetra
ted mountain gorges, where a mountain !
goat could hardly follow. Herejwith!
a few years’ provisions ou hand,we shall
he secure from the reacli of armies, and j
when the Government has spent ten I
times the sum of the cost of the Florida :
war, they will be glad to abandon their
now taV'orite scheme of exterminating
tlic Mormons,
A Tough Old Stump.—ln boring the 1
Artesian well in Stockton, California,
the bore struckea red wood stump 350,
feet below the surface of the ground, ],

of the Pacific Ocean. The earth above i
and below was of stratified clay and
sand, which had apparently not been
dhturbed since its original disposition,
which, occurred nobody knows when,
perhaps several hundreds of thousands
of years ago. That is a tough old stump.
jjeT' There was a heavy frost in At
lanta, on Saturday morning, which did
considerable damage to vegetation.
Some genius has conceived the bril
liant idea to press all the lawyers into
military service in case of war—because
their charges are so great that no one
could stand them.

gives life, health and beauty to the decaying,
falling and dead, restoring, as if by magic, that
which was supposed to be irrecoverably lost.
Heads nearly bald and others nearly white are
daily being changed to their pristine beauty, and
faces covered with pimp os are rendered as
smooth as an infant’s and blushing as a rose all
by the use of Prof Wood’s Hair Restorative.
Caution.— Beware of worthless imitations as
several arv already in the market called by dif
ferent names. Use none unless the words Prof.

giT Dr. Sanford’s lnvigova
tor.—The n ost skeptical people can be con
vinced by trial that all the family medicines are
not humbug, and that among the thousand of
butter-fly life there arc a few of great merit and
undoubted worth. Os these, Dr. SANFORD’S
INVIGORATOR or LIVER REMEDY stands first
and foremost among the remedies of the day
that can be relied on as a medicine that is all it
is recommended by its proprietors. It adver
tises itself on every trial, for there are none who
use it i ut tell their friends to do so, and so it
goes from mouth to mouth till all the people of
the Union have learned the good of this truly
valuable medicine. It is recommended with tes
timonials to prove its virtue for the cure of liver
complaints of every kind, from the worst Dys
pepsia to a common Headache, and is particular
ly adapted to Jaundice, Deranged Stomach, Bow
el Complaints, and Diseases of Children
One or two doses are said to cure a cold with
scarce a failure. It is worth a trial for this
alone. It is particularly adapted to the use of
ladies of sedentary habits. Some ladies of the
highest standing in society have given their cer
tificates of its efficacy, and we say to all who are
ailing, try one bottle, and you will never be
without it .—JilnnntjL-ld Pn-.<s. ap26-m

Solved 2—DR. MORSE’S INVIGORATING COR
DIAL.—The dyspeptic patient, whose stomach
has lost the power of duly converting food into a
life-sustaining element, is relieved by a single
course of this extraordinary tonic. The gastric
fluid re acquires its solvent power, and the crude
nutriment, which was a load and a burthen to
the sufferer, while his digestive organization was
paralyzed and unstrung, becomes, under the
wholesome revolution created in the system, the
basis of activity, strength and health.
The nervous sufferer, while tormented by the
acute, physical agony of Neuralgia, Tic-doloreux
or ordinary headache, afflicted with vague ter
rors, wakened by periodical fits, threatened with
paraiy.-; , b rue tftv. ii and dispirited by that
terrible lassitude which proceeds from a lack of
nervous energy, or experiencing any other pain
or disability arising from the unnatural condition
of the wonderful machinery which connects ev
ery member with the source of sensation, mo
tion ami thought—derives immediate benefit
from the use of this Cordial, which at once calms,
invigorates aod regulates the shattered nervous
organization.
Females who have tried it are unanimous in
declaring the Elixir to be the greatest boon that
woman has ever received from the haeds of
, medical men.
Morse’s Invigorating Elixir has a direct, im
mediate and astonishing effect upon the appetite.
While it renews the strength of the digestive
powers it creates a desire for the solid material
which is to be subjected to their action. As an
appetiser it has no equal in the Pharmacopia.
If long life and the vigor necessary to its en
joyment are desirable, this medicine is indeed of
preeiou- worth
Its beneficial effects are not confined to either
sex or to any age. The feeble girl, the ailing
wife, the listless, enervated youth, the overworn
man of business, the victim of nervous depres
sion, the individual suffering from general de
bility or from th 4 weakness of a single organ
will all find Immediateand permanent relief from
the use of this incomparable renovator. To
those who have a predisposition to paralysis it
will prove {i complete and unfailing safe guard
against that terrible nvilady. There are many
perhaps who have so trifled with their constitu
tion that they think themselves beyond the reach
of medicine. I.et not even those despair. The
Elixir deals with disease as it exists, without re
erence to the causes, and will not only remove
the disorder itself, but rebuild the broken con
stitution
LOSS OF MEMORY, confusion, giddiness, rush
of blood to the head, melancholy, mental debil
ity, hysteria, wretchedness, thoughts ofself-de
s ruction, fear of insanity, hypochondriasis, dys
pepsia, general prostration, irritability, nervous
ness, inability to sleep, distaste incident to fe
males, decay of the propagating functions, hys
teria, monomania, vague terrors, pulpitation of
the heart, iin potency, constipation, etc., from
whatever cau e arising, it is, if there is any reli
ance to be placed on human testimony, absolute
ly lnraiiiMe.
CAUTION.—Dr. Morse’s Invigorating Cordial
lias been counterfeited by some unprincipled
persons. In future, all the genuine Cordial will
have the proprietor’s sac simile pasted over the

blown in glass : Dr. Morse’s Invigorating Cor
