Just after going to press yesterday
we learned that the gentlemen from
Montgomery had settled their difficulty
without a resort to villainous saltpetre
the second time.

such floral attractions must be one of
felicity. _

of the frost in different localities, from
which we make such extracts as are like- 1
ly to interest our readers.
Tlie Chronicle &,■ Sentinel, of this city,
R aysthat a plan ter, writing from Coving
ton to his factor in this city, dating his
better Wednesday, says :
I am just about starting with all my
hands for my plantation. My overseer
tells me it will be necessary to re plant
two hundred acres of Cotton, the whole
of which has been cut down by tlie
frost.”
That paper also says that a similar
letter from Madison was received by an
other factor. Per contra, a gentleman
who arrived Wednesday from West
Point, states that wit Kin tlie range of
his observation, cotton and corn were
but little injured, and the necessity for
re-planting would be limited to a very
few localities.
The Charleston Standard says :
Gentlemen whose statements are reli

they had it quite sharp. We fear for ,

AUGUSTA DISPATCH OFFICE, 1
April 29, 1858. J
Cotton—ln our last review, we reported the
sale of 2746 bales, for the week ending Thursday,
ltwo o’clock, P. M., April 2>d, and wc left tlie!
Lnarket at the following quotations :

P»«r 12
During the week under review there has been
a continuous demand, at Tull prices ; and but for
the difficulty of eflecting negot ations, and the
discount on Carolina currency, for which most
of the Cotton lias been bought, prices would
probably have ruled a shade higher. The re
ceipts of the week have been 3,649 bales ; the
sales reported amounted to 4327 hales at the
following particulars : 5 at 9, 6 at 9%, 1 at
sat 10, 4at 10#, 3at 10#, 281 at 11,172ut 11#,
302 at 11.#, 217 at 1 ]#, 556 at 11#, 843 at 11#,
107 at 11#, 222 at 11#, 657 at 12, 18 at 12#, 356
it 12#, 113 at 12#, 345 at 12#, 24 at 12#, 34
12%, 17 at 13#, 12 at 14# cents.
Since the arrival of the Arabia but little has
been done, and the market is in rather an un
settled state, with indications of a slight decline,
consequently wc cannot give quotations further
than to remark that Middling Fair Cotton will
probably bring 12# c ents.
Sales to-day 194 bales : 1 at 9,3 at 11, 87 at
II #, 15 at 12, 4 at 12%, Cl at 12 5-16, 2 at 12#,
20 at 1 2% cents. The otforings aro light, and
•he demand moderate, at about the prices of the
week. Middling Fair 12# cents.
Remarks.—Tho telegraphic reports of damage
by frost in Alabama and other localities, have
not yet been fully confirmed, but from the best
advices we have been ablo to obtain, we are of
the opiDion that the injury has not been ns seri
ous us was at first apprehended. Nor have we
learned that wheat or other crops have suffered
materially in Upper Georgia and Tennessee.—
The weather now is more pleasant, though still
very cool for the season.
Trade.—lt has been a dull week in all branch
es of trade, save perhaps the retail grocery bu
siness, which seems to have maintained consi
derabl#activity, it is too cool for summer dry
goods, and tho stringency of money matters,
owing to the preparation of tlie banks to re
sume on the first prox., has prevented specula
tive transactions to any extent in provisions.
Bacon.—Tho wholesale trade has boon limited
during most of tho week, and previous prices i
have been hardly maintained. Wo quote hog l
round 10 a 10# cents; Shoulders 9c.; Hams!
10# a 11c.; Clear Sides 11# a 11% cents.
Flour.—This article is in but little request—
heavy stocks have accum'ilat»‘d. but the late
frost has prevented any material concession in
prices, and we quota, Tennessee superfine $4.50;
a $4.75. Extra family $5.50. City Mills super
fine is still quoted at $5.; Extra $5.75.; Extra
family $6.50.
Wheat.—Wo hear of no transactions in this
article since our last, and we continue our quo
tations with the remark that they are nominal;
and that sales could not be made in any quanti
ty at those figures.
Corn—This article continues in moderate re
quest, in small lots, at 70 to 75 cents.
Peas—There is a supply in market, and the
article is dull at SI to sl.lO.
Oats—Scarce and dull—worth about 45 cents.
Grain Bags—Our market is well supplied at
the following quotations : 2 bush Osnaburg Bags,
17c. ; Shirting, 12#c. ; 49 lb. Flour Bags, B#c.;
98 lb. Flour Bags, 11# cents.
Potatoes—Wo notice a few lots of Tennessee
eating Potatoes, which are offered at $1 per bush;
Northern, $2 per bush.
Butter.—Good country butter will bring 20
cents. Goshen may bo had at 28 to 30 cents.
Groceries.—We have no change to rote in
the leading articles ; Coffee continues firm at
11# to 12# for Rio.
Molasses—Moderate supply in market, and,
prices are unchanged : 28 to 30c. for Cubas;
Syrup, 40c ; New Orleans, 40.
Rice—We quote cents.
Salt—This article is dull and unchanged. The
supply of o’d Salt is not yet exhausted ; and it
may be bad at a wide range of prices. A prime
article is worth 90 cents to sl.
Coffee—Tlie supply is equal to the demand
but owing to the light stocks in all the ports,
prices are stiff. Rio is 11 # to 12# ct for medium
to lair, 12# to 13c for choice.
Tropical Fruits—Scarce. We notice a few
Oranges in market at $5 per box. Apples S 6 per
barrel.
Whiskey—Prices unchanged and good supply.
Poor grades are selling at 25 to 28 cents y gal
better at 30 to 35 cents y gal.
llay—North River $1 to $1.25. Dull.
Eggs.—There isa demand for eggs atlorii/12#c
Lard.—'This article is still plenty, and in de
mand, at 11 to 12# cents in bb!s.; in cans 12 to
12# cents.
Drugs and Medicines,—There is no more fa
vorable market than Augusta for merchants and
physicians to purchase anything in this line of
business to advantage. Stocks of Paints, Oils,
Glass, &c.,arc ample and prices low.
Plantation Implements —Ail tho modern im
provements in farming and gardening tools
may be had at reasonable rates ; and we are
pleased to observe an increasing demand for
tue best farming implements.
Exchange—The rates are the same as last re
ported : on New York # per ct.
Leather—The Leather market has a continual
upward tendency, and we now quote as follows;
Hemlock Sole, (poor damaged,) 15 to 17 :
good do. heavy, 20 to 21 ; do. do. middle 23 to
24 ; do. do. light 22 to 23 ; good heavy 27 to 28;
do. middle 29 to 0 ; light 21 to 29. The above
alludes to Rio Grande and Buenos Ayres Hides.
Oronoco lfS)2c less than rates specified. Oak
Sole, (Baltimore, Spanish,) all weights, 35 t 037;
do. Slaughter 33 to 34 ; do. New York do. 33 to
38 ; do. trimmed 40 to 43 ; Southern 25 to 28c.
Freights—The River is in good order, and the
boats of all the companies are making regular
trips. Cotton to Savannah 25 cents per bale ;
Flour, 15 cents per bbl ; Salt, 15 tents per sack.
Cotton by Railroad to Savannah, 60 cents ; to
Charleston 80 cents.

1 course of this extraordinary tonic. The gastric
fluid re acquires its solvent power, and the crude
nutriment, which was a load and a burthen to
the sufferer, while his digestive organization was
r paralyzed and unstrung, becomes, under the
1 wholesome revolution created in the system, the
basis of activity, strcngtli and health.
