Stearns will be in Mont gomery at the Convention, and vrill re port proceedings for the press in this city. TTr say > "'temporaries in Montgomery,! it wsiting breth ren ” of the pri.v ■ally, that the; will find Mr. Steaic, a gentleman i>: int elligence and character, and we tr„ th ey will extend to him the usual facil it' ,es of business as well as the courte «’ ics of the profession. — The Bunks. The papers of the principal commer- Vial cities of Georgia and Carolina, are . .indulging in some rather spicy commu “ nications on the financial institutions of the two States. So far as this war of the banks is concerned, we, and the bu siness public generally, have very little occasion to trouble ourselves much about it; for the bunks of our State do not need our endorsement, and if we need theirs we are not likely to enjoy it for some time to come. We have no pieans to lavish on the Georgia banks for resuming specie pay ment—for they have simply returned to their duty—a duty which they would never have remitted had the Carolina banksbeen faithful to theirs-a duty, the neglect of which is at best an ugly blotch on the commercial record of any State or country. The only just praise that can be extended the banks of our State is to congratulate them that they have done no worse— that they have re solved to come out of a condition of re proach in spite of the • complaisance’ with which their neighbors who forced them into it, continue in it and defend it. And as far as the hanks of Charleston are concerned, our people need not a word to excite their preference for spe cie paying, over suspended currency. The result is working, just as it should, in creating a preference for Georgia mo ney, and in strengthening our commer cial intercourse with those marts doing business on a specie basis. Carolina pa pers and Carolina banks bite a file when they force comparisons between the con dition of the currency of Carolina and that of Georgia. i Increase of Baptists in tile U* States. Our brother Pemberton, of the Sparta Georgian, (the man who thinks the Dir- \ patch on secular subjects will do, but when we touch on religion is always |: pitching into us) says our statement that the increase of the Baptists in the United States during the last year has been 590,000 is a mistake, and quotes a table from the Baptist Register showing that the increase has not been half that much in ten years. That publication puts down the gain as follows in the two sections: Clear gain in the Northern States, in ten years 26,808. Clear gain in the Southern States, in ten years, 201,105. Excess of gain in tho South over the North in the last teu years, 174,297. While we cheerfully staiuftorrected, it ig proper for us to say that we copie 1 the item from some exchange, and in sist that it shall not be put down as one j of our religious blunders. “Staining at Gnats,” &c. Os all the nefarious trades in which] man ever engage, says an exchange pa per, the Coolie trade is the most revolt jug. Its barbarities surpass the horrors | of the “middle passage and yet those! * who are most active in its prosecution; are citizens of the nation from which ] we hear the loudest outcries in belaid f ] of humanity and freedom. We are told of these wretched beings dying on the prolonged passage from Asia to the At lantic coast, of hunger, thirst, and the foulest diseases engendered by close con finement, without air or proper nutri ment, in the holds of ships. We arc told of these unfortunates murdering one another in the agony of their des peration ; and although the thing is palpable, the evidence of its existence unquestioned and undeniable, civilized Europe shuts its eyes, pockets the gains, and balances her sin-ledger, by shriek ing outlier virtuous indignation at the wickedness of American slave-holding. She swallows the Coolies and the cotton very well herself, but wonders how brother Jonathan can digest such hor rible things. - »■•••. • t«r It is reported that a difficulty oc curred yesterday morning near the Bath Paper Mills, in Edgefield District, S. C., about six miles from this city, in which a man named Middleton Franklin was shot ; but we understand the wound is not dangerous. We have no particulars | as to the cause of the rencounter or the! names of those engaged in it—except; as above named. ffT’The Charleston Courier of yesterday j says that the bills of the Georgia Banks! .are at par in Charleston, not par excel lence, but par complaisance. We are sorry to say that the bills of the South Caro lina banks do not c.ijov the same favor amongthe “outside barbarians”of this! “suburb” of Charleston, for their notes! are at no sort of par—neither par ex cellence nor par complaisance. Wc wonder if gold dollars are equal to the notes of the Banks of Charleston in that city? gg" Capt. Jaqitjs, who was chosen as Mayor White's successor, has resigned, and h's- Jas. H. The gastric t fluid re acquires its solvent power, and the crude ; nutriment, which was a load and a burthen to the sufferer, while his digestive organization was paralyzed and unstrung, becomes, under the wholesome revolution created in the system, the r basis of activity, strength and health.
