(ftmittg psptcji. 3 O'CLOCK P. M. MW 10,1858. LOCAL MATTERS" Visitors to the Convention. We shall be pleased to extend the freedom of our Sanctum to any of our j friends who are in the city during Con-; vention week. Those who wish to see j late papers are especially invited to call j and examine them. Troth Extracted by Electricity. A new and signally successful experi ment in extracting teeth by the electri cal process described in our paper of Friday evening 7th inst., was perform ed by Dr. Chase, a his rooms this morning, assisted by Dr. A. P. Bignon, late of the Baltimore College. Seven teeth—five upper molars, and two eye teeth—were extracted, and the patient declared that she experienced no pain, but simply a numbing sensation about the gums. The gum was also lanced by the same process. This is, we be lieve, the first instance of the applica tion of this new agent to the dental art in this section, and in the hands of the skillful surgeon it promises to be a most valuable discovery. New Drug Store. Among the new branches of business opened in our city—which it always af fords U 3 pleasure to chronicle —is the Drugstore of Dr. Paimer, under the Planters’ Hotel. It is a neatly arranged and creditable store, and we commend it to the public, and especially to the Reform practice, to the friends ot which Dr. Palmer also offers his professional bjrvices. • • Serious Accident. On Saturday night, abont ten clock, a negro woman the property of Mrs. Wilson, was instantly killed, by the ex. plosion o[ a Kerosine barrel, while she wa* in the act of looking into it. The fire ■' communicating with the gas, burst the barrel, with aloud report. This occur red at the residence of Mr. Monger in the lower part of the city. Mr. Hunger was slightly burned. As there are various rumors in refer ence to this unfortunate occurrence, we have procured from Mr. Hunger the fol lowing statement: He had received a barrel of Coal Oil, commonly known as Kerosine Oil, in a very leaky condition, and was induced to draw it off. which being completed it, was placed in store in an out-house, while the empty cask, with the faucet drawn, remained on the slight elevation made to facilitate the process of decan tation. The servant girl took a common oil lamp, and commenced to examine the faucet hole, and placed the lamp in immediate connection with the faucet vent, and ignited the gas evolved from the oil adhering to the sides of tire cask. The explosion was the immediate cause of her death. The verdict of the Jury of Inquest, was in accordance witli the above facts. This is the first instance of an explo sion of this gas that we have yet heard of. Kobbery. We learn, that Mr. J. W. Jleukdiv: the bridge*keeper, was robbed on lasi night, of JIOO. Entrance was obtained in Mr. Meredith’s house by means of a false key, and obtaining the key of the Bafe,it was easily opened and the money abstracted. Our vigilant and energetic policemen are on the track of the per petrators. Since writing the above, a negro nam ed Lewis, belonging to Mr. Meredith. has been arrested on suspicion, and sent to jail. The Victor Cools Stove. We have once or twice taken occasion to make favorable mention of this stove now extensively manufactured at the Machine Works in this city. We. are gratified to learn that the demand for them is constantly, and rapidly increas ing, and that they are superseding all others throughout the State. Salisbu ry, & Co., of this city are the general Agents for the sale of these stoves, and are always prepared to fill orders to the trade or to families. They are kept also by S. S. Jones & Co. The We are gratified to learn that this popular Thespian corps, whose repre sentations were so agreeable to the “can’t get away club” last summer, are preparing to give a series of perform .n --ces at an early period. They expect to open at Concert Hall some night during the present week. .... « 'A* * .. ■ Clirap Siwl> 1., Mac bines* While the advantages of the older and more successful sewing machines have been appreciated by thousand * who have used them, the price at which they sell, amounts to almost a prohibi tion to the power seamstresses of the country, who most need them. To meet their wants, various cheap ma chines have been brought out, and some of them are having a great run.— Among these we may notice the Gibb's and "Palmetto” patterns, advertised in to-day’s paper. We have one of the Palmetto machines in use, in our fami ly, and find it to work satisfactorily. They may be seen at the store of I H. Stearns, & Co., where also they may be purchased. They are very neat ma chines, and we cheerfully commend them to the inspection of our readers. Newton House Closeil. This spacious and eligible boarding house was closed on Saturday by the Proprietor, who doubtless finds that i hotels and boarding houses in Augusta are too thick to thrive. Self Generating Gas. Citizens and strangers are invited to j visit the store of S. S. Jones & Co., op -1 posite the Dispatch office, on the nights |of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, to witness the burning of Daneord’s jnew non explosive light. — Kicltutoml Superior Court. I The second week of this Court opened this morning, at 9 o'clock. IST Attention is especially directed l to the advertisement of Messrs. Broom & Norrell, in to-day’s paper. The a <. (invention. Persons visiting the city are especial ly referred to the houses who advertise in our columns, as the places to pur chase goods in the various departments of trade. Items* Gen. Charles Fenton Mercer, a gen tleman widely known throughout Vir ginia and the country, died at Howard, Fairfax county, Va., on Tuesday last, in the 80111 year of his age. Six thousand bushels of Canadian wheat that had been in storage at the mouth of the Genessee river were sold, on the 30th alt., for $1.02 per bushel.— It would have brought $1.20 per bushel last fall. A careful estimate of all the persons of Indian blood, indicates that they now number about 5,000,000, in all North , America. The National Typographical Union convened at Chicago on Monday. Robt. O. Smith, Esq., of Philadelphia, was elected President for 1858. Thalbe g’s concerts have been the most sucessful ever given in this county. His last tour in the South netted over $20,000 profit in less than three months. The western railroads are reducing i heir tolls upon produce from twenty to thirty per cent. Andrew Flick. 100 years old, died in Gilesco, Va., last week. Win. P. An Escape Valve. The whole world is a lottery, in which all the men and women are continually drawing blanks and prizes. Society would cease to have any excitement— life would have nocharms were this not 1 the case ; for mankind must have : something to hope for, in order to ex* . ist. • Commerce is based upon this ne cessity of man’s nature ; and all kinds : of business and trade arc purely specu ' lative because nothing is certain. The . establishment of lotteries has grown . out of the knowledge of this principle which operates so powerfully upon so ciety: and they will always be sanc- I tinned and supported, because they are I truly beneficial to a large majority of the public, who crave exceitement Jin matters of gain, and desire to do so . without being subjected to the injuries and loss of time incidental to gaming. They are as strictly commercial as any other business where risks are indulged . in—for chance rules every result where investments are made. Hence it is, that Messrs. Swan Si Co., of Augusta, i Georgia, who draw a lottery every Sat } unlay, are successful. They receive by mail, ten. five, or two dollars and a half f r a whole, half, or quarter of a ticket, > and they send out more than one prize . to every ten applications—while the ticket holder, to whom, they promptly send, sometimes finds himself the pos sessor of a fortune. Melancholy. At Philadelphia, on Monday, an in quest was held upon the body of a young and rather prepossessing girl named Sa ; rah Gost, who died in one of the miser able hovels in Bedford street, from in temperance. She was scarcely eighteen years of age. A lad named Morris O’- ’ Brian, only thirteen years of age, died - on Monday in Carpenter street, near j Seventh from the effects of excessive in ebriation. An inquest was held in his ‘ case also, and, in both, verdicts of 3 death from intemperance was rendered, j i What a commentary upon the progress and potency of the temperance reform ! It is predicted that the washing-out of the river bottoms by the flood of the Mississippi will be productive of a * healthful season. “Isay, Pat, what are you about?— sweeping out that room ?”—“ No,” an swered Pat, “ I am sweeping out the dirt, and leaving the room.” NEVER SAY FAIL. Keep pushing—bis wiser Than sitting aside. And dreaming and sighing, And waiting the tide. In life’s earnest battle They only prevail Who daily inarch onwaud, And never say fail. With an eye ever open, A tongue that’s not dumb, And heart that will never To sorrow succumb, You’ll battle and conquer Though thousands assail : H w strong and how mighty i Who never say fail. Ahead, then, keep pushing, And elbow your way, ' Unheeding the envious, All asses that bray ; All obstacles vanish. All enemies quail, In the might oi their wisdom, Whenever say fail. In life’s rosy morning, In manhood’s lair pride, Let this be your motto, Your footsteps to guide, In storm and in sunshine, Whatever assail, We’ll onward and conquer, And never say fail. Beware. We ask you to peruse the article headed “ Resumption of Specie Pay ments,” which we extract from the Sa vannah Dailg Georgian. The recent re ports of the South Carolina Banks pre sents an alarming state of affairs, which ought to lead the people to spurn the bills of nearly every South Carolina Bank as they would the bills of the veriest wild Cat Bank now in existence.
