Opening Dispatch. O l K P. HI, JUSJE 2*), t*sß. Notice to Advertisers. Aflvcrtirioinents for the Eve.'jxg Dispatch must. »’ handed in by eZeren o'clock in the forenoon, in : - c r ier to appear the same day. LOCAL MATTERS. TSu- Fatitastlque*. We believe preparations are making! to have a crowd of these unique a la car- • nival signals for fun and frolic on the 6th Inst. We are requested to say that the dif ferent parties who are coming out, are invited to meet irt the yard of the Waynesboro’ Depot, from whence they will start at 3 o’clock. The Samaritan Society. We have been asked the question, frequently of late, is this useful Society still in an organized condition? In an swer, we can only say, we think not. Os all the old officers, wo believe hut one, the Treasurer, is now residing among us,: and three of the Board of Directors.— Os the old members, in looking over the last organization, we see the names! of ten only and hut six of them are of J the original pannel. We would like to see a re-organization of this useful and ever to be remembered Society. It should not only he re-organized,but kept in a state of complete organization, for there is no telling when the valuable services of its members may again be required to relieve the sick and feed the poor. By all means, let there he a meeting of such of the old members as are still in the city, to take the matter into consideration. Should disease and death again visit our city, there will he no lack of means to carry out its char- 1 itahle object, and some day or other it may receive an endowment that will place it on a permanent footing. 3 [communicated] Mr. Editor:— lt having been announc ed that an Excursion would he given on the steamer Swan, Capt. Johnson, on Monday, the 2Stli, at 3 p. m., the hour assignated for her departure, a large crowd was seen gathering from various parts of the city towards the Wharf. — And notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather a goodly number wore rea dy to embark. The Augusta Brass Band were in attendance, and the sweet strains of music that pierced the air, resounding far and soft along the smooth surface of the water, as the beautiful steamer mored gracefully from shore, were well calculated to arouse emotions in the bosoms of every one, even the most callous spectator. She glides along like the noble bird whose name she so appropriately merits ; and soon aboard “the merry sound of music and tlm dance” were heard, and every member -of that merry baud of votaries seemed involuntarily to be hurried along in the pleasures of the evening. Our worthy friend Smith, of Hose Cottage notoriety—wss there with a goodly supply of those luxuries his Nursery affords—and as the “blushing blossoms” that would seem imprudent-] Iy to laugli from the rich bogucts that bedecked ids reserve basket, would | meet the eyes of the young lovers they, doubtless wished for once “I was a] humming bird that sports among the flowers.” While the dance was being carried on in thocubiu, tht: ,/,’''/,' jtas<e)igcrs bethought ihcmseiyes of an invitation, and as they glided rapidly around in all the mazes of metaphyrienl confusion,/W/y,by main force, brought from the how of his fiddle all the notes that had been lying there and asoumulating for le ! 'these many years. The evening is fast approaching, and as the hoot .fumes her course iforhcr! moorings, the murmurs of nuary indi cated tire reluctance with which the pleasuros ot the trip were yielded. Eve rything passed off quietly, and ithe spec tators Amt.lined the shore, tokhthat the pleasures of the excursion wer&drawing to a dose. The party arrived in time to be lighted home by the twilight of day, and soc-n the dispersing.crow disap peared. A grand,Seal excursion is ic'be given on IFonday, the fifth of July, and it is to be hoped'that a more fapowthle day will witness a large attendance. A rich store is in waiting for those who have I not availed'themselves of the past op portunities ,of an excursion -era the Swan. B. Tanking an .Elephants Him:.— They are tanning an elephant's hide at -Cin cinnati. It was, purchased by .a furrier in Wisconsin, where the animal, which belonged to a,menagerie, died. The freight-to Cincinnati cost sls. Jtiis-an immense hide, so bulkly that the ten ners handle it with great difficulty. .It is nearly two inches thick, and fell a year and a half will be required to tap it thoroughly. It ..will be a curiosity when thoroughly tanned and season ed. We learn that a petition is to be pre sented to tire -city government that a ton or two of iee be put into the Beacon I Hil! reservoir every morssng, in order, that the people may be accommodated j with ice-water without fu "tiler expense, j On the fourth of July it is proposed toj throw ! n a small cargo of lemons and a! few hogsheads of rum and sugar Bos -! ton Post. Lieut. J. S. Garland, United States K army, lias been commissioned as captain' Tlie Recent Storm lit New York. rije New York Commercial Advertiser, of Wednesday afternoon, Bays : AV e stated yesterday that the storm on Monday afternoon had extended a> ' far as Tarry town, on the Hudson river. 1 V*”e have since learned particulars from which it appears that the tornado was even more violent in the country than !in the city. Lordly trees, the giants of the forest, which have stood the wear ; : and tear of centuries, and upon which 1 many another storm has beaten, were I levelled with the earth. Several are 1 i broke in two, the tops reaching the | ground, while others on the brinks of ' i precipices, were torn out by their roots 1 and hurled down, destroying every- [ thing before them. Some idea may be 1 formed of the violence of the wind, ] When we state that no less than fifty or sixty of these trees now lie levelled and broken between this city and Tarry town ; the constant falling of which as ! the tornado continued its course, can ( only be likened to a continual discharge * of cannon. Fences were destroyed, \ j crops of corn and grain shared the , same fate, and several buildings in the villages of onkers and Tarry town were injured. At Tarry town, Mr. S. Burr’s ’ grain mill was destroyed, and at Yon ; kers the top of a new building was I blown oif, lumber piles were levelled, and the lumber sent Hying in all direc i lions. In the latter village a boy was 1 j struck by lightning, but whether he 1 1 was only stunned, or received more se | rious injuries, our reporter had not , I time to learn. I The steamboats South America and Robert L. Stevens had their smoke pipes blown down. The South America had but one of her smoke pipes stand- < j big when she reached Poughkeepsie, i | the other lying much bruised and bat- , tered on the deck. Workmen werebusi- i ly employed yesterday at Hudson in straightening and putting them up But i little harm seems to be done this side [ of Yonkers, except to the crops, by the hail. Our reporter asked the ticket < agent at Carmansville, this morning, if c much harm had been done around there: “ well,” he said, “ not much, except to 1 the grain, and twenty or thirty trees 1 which are blown down.” He was then c asked if it hailed there : “ no,” he an swered, “it did not hail, but large 1 chunks of ice came down, half as big 1 again as a walnut.” No estimate can be formed as to the extent of the damage J to the crops, but it must be enormous. f In this city several disasters from the 1 tornado arc noted in addition to the many we reported yesterday. 1— . Romantic Marriage. Oh ! give me a cot in the valley I love, A tent in the greenword, a home iuthegrovo; I cure hot how horrible so ever it be. If one faithful heart will bat share it with me. I Oil Tuesday evening, one of those picturesque crafts, “yclept a broad 1 horn,” might have been seen by the ( looker-out, gracefully rounding to at our liatboat landing, and shortly there after an individual, “on some great J purpose evidently intent,” disembark- 1 ed, and straightway repaired to the of- : ficc of Justice Houghton. He inform- ! ed the worthy magistrate that he desir- ' ed his-services iu a matrimonial cere mony—stating at the same time that front “boyhood’s sunny hours” he had cherished fondly a desire to be joined in wedlock’s bonds beneath the waving branches of some lovely grove. Our obliging functionary at once as sented, and the license and the lady— the latter being a passenger on the “broad-horn”-—together with some cit izens, who joined the group, all mount ed on horse back, rode to a lovely grove, about Springfield, where the ceremony was solemnly performed. The beautiful bride in her flowing costume, her jaunty cap and snow- white plume, with her prancing steed, would , have made a picture for Rosa Bonheur, while her happy lord seemed translated ] to the seventh heaven. | The ceremony over, the bridal party I made a “tour' over the vast extent of j our romantic suburbs, taking in their • way our beautiful cemetery and Fort j Hill ; and as the day-god sunk to his 1 gorgeous clinch of purple and gold, ' they returned to the city, embarked ! j once more upon the “ broad horn,” and soon were borne away on the bo- 1 somof the “Great Father of Waters.” Viclcshura Southron. Si-orts ff the Pit.—Mr. Nicholas Ar rington, i famous breeder of game chickens, f>f Nash county, N. C., passed through the city yesterday morning, for Richmond, with thirty eight cocks, to pit in the grand Virginia and North Carolina match on the 28th inst. The conditions of this contest are, SIOO a side. $2-000 for the odd, each contest ant to pit twenty-live cooks—that is to say, earii successive winner takes the prize oi SIOO, the one winning the ma jority of the twenty five, sweeping the ' grand prize of t'-J.tiOO - 'PCtrJmrg !'•. Expresi. Boevs Lotteries.—lt appears from a statement recently made up at the Post office Department, that the number of letters addressed to Bogus lottery and other firms, from April Ist to June 19th. 1858, and sent to the dead letter office. : for the return of the contents to the ■ wiiters, is one thousand six hundred and nineteen, containing an aggregate of $8,477.48 in money, and $775 in drafts.—The records of the postoffice show that this mode of swindling tin public is no new thing, but lias been more or less practiced for several years past.—TV. i r . Times. Hoxor to ax American Student.—The highest honor in the gift of the Univer sity of Cambridge, England, that of “Senior Wrangler ” was conferred up on Morris Birkbeck Poll, son of Gilbert T. Pell, of New folk. It is the only instance in which this high academic distinction lias been bestowed upon an American. We ss.av a good anecdote the other day about long preaching. A lady took her son, of some five or six years to church. After the minister kiid been preaching .about half an hour, Abe little fellow grew sleepy and began to nod.— The mother roused him into attention several times by pinching. But as it seemed a hopeless case, she concluded to Jet him sleep undisturbed. After the Sittle fellow bad bk nap out,, be awoke, and saw the minirtei still liold i.i»g forth. He lookedupin his moth-.r's (pee, and innocently asked—“ Mother, | is-it this Sunday night, or is it next Suc- I day night!” *-•*-. j Death oe Mu. MORSE’S INVIGORATING COR DIAL.—The dyspeptic patient, whose stomach; has lost the power of duly converting food into a life-sustaining element, is relieved by a single course of this extraordinary tunic. The gastric fluid re acquires its solvent power, and the crude nutriment, which was a load and a burthen to the sufferc-r, while his digestive organization was paralyzed and unstrung, becomes, under tbej wholesome revolution created in the system, tbej basis of activity, strength and health. The nervous sufferer, while tormented by the acute, physical agony of Neuralgia, Tic-doloreux or ordinary headache, afflicted with vague ter rors, wakened by periodical fits, threatened with j paralysis, borne down and dispirited by that j terrible lassitude which proceeds from a lack of; nervous energy, or experiencing any other pain j or disability arising from the unnatural condition! of the wonderful machinery which connects ev ery member with the source of sensation, mo i tion and thought—derives immedrte from the use of this Cordial, which at once calms, j invigorates and regulates the shattered nervous j organization. Females who have tried it are unanimous iu. declaring the Elixir to be the greatest boon that' woman has ever received from the ha d 3 of ‘ medical men. Morse’s Invigorating Elixir has a direct, ye mediate and astonishing effect upon the sppetite., While it renews the strength of tho digestive! powers it creates a desire for the solid material j which is to be subjected to their action. As an appetiser it lias no equal in the Pliarmacopia. If long life and the vigor necessary to its en joyment are desirable, this medicine is indeed of precious worth Its beneficial effects are not confined to either j sex or to any age. The feeble girl, the ailing; wife, the listless, enervated youth, the overworn man of business, the victim of nervous dtpres-i sion, the individual suffering from general do , bility or from the weakness of a single organ j will all find immediate and permanent relit ffrom: the use of this incomparable renovator. Toj those who hare a predisposition to paralysis it ; will prove a complete and unfailing safe-guard I against that terrible nulady. There are many perhaps who have so trifled with their constitu-! tion that they think thpjgsclves beyond the reach j of medicine. I.et not those despair. Th<»- Elixir deals with dib<*.i.£ as it exists, w ithout re icrcuce to the causes, r.*nd will not only remove j the disorder itself, bi';.. rebuild the broken con- j .^titution LOSS OB' MEMORY, confusion, giddiness, rush I of blood to the head, melancholy, mental debit- j ity, hysteria, wretchedness, thoughts ofself-de-} 3 ruction, fear of insanity, hypochondriasis, dy.s-i pepsia, general prostration;lrritability, nervous-j ness, inability to sleep, distaste incident to fe males, decay of the propagating functions, hys-1 teria, monomania, vague terrors, palpitation of the heart, impotency, constipation, etc., from whatever cause arising, it is, if there is any reli ance to be placed on human testimony, absolute ly infallible. CAUTION.—Dr. ifbrse’s Invigorating Cordial has been counterfeited by some unprincipled persons. REASONS why the Ghoyer k Baker Machine is universally preferred for family I sowing: 1. It is more simple and easier kept in order ; than any other 31achine. 2d. It makes a seam which will not rip or ravel, though every third stitch Is cut. 3d. It sews from two ordinary spools, and thus all trouble of winding thread is avoided, while the same machine can be adapted at pleasure by a mere change of spool, to all varieties of worM 4ih. The same machine runs silk, linen thrca4 and common spool cotton with equal facility. sth. The seam is as elastic as the most elasd fabric, so that it is free from all liability to ureal iu washing, ironing, or otherwise. 6th.
