though the abstraction of a few Ounces

» oonsidored useful in cases of fevers, the
j loss of any considerable portion is foie

vations, perhaps their curiosity, have
’ ceased.
Yet there are many who may have
often wondered what tills blood ■ an be,
which is so necessary to existence
* What are its constituents ! In what

much is there in a human body'' Is

; , aiikag Is the blood of a horse, dog, or
. iotber mere animal, similar to that of a
man? We shall answar these queries
> m order, beginning with the last.
I! The blood of a human being is essen
t tially different from that of any other
animal : and the blood of one animal
differs from that of another. The Wood
r of ahorse is prison in the veins of a
.-dog. The blood of a sheep, transfer-!
red into a cat, kills the cat The blood
1 ,of ary animal, except one of its own
■ species, forced into the veins of a man,
, brings on paralysis and death. Science
has analyzed wherein the Wood of one
! animal varies from tbit of another, i
and lias shown that what experiment
. .has revealed, can also be demonstrated
physiogieallv.
‘ Even in the same animal there-are|
i two kinds of blood, one, called arterial.
. which rushes from the heart, and the
jother venous, which pours into the
I heart. The first is bright scarlet, the;
last purple. The first passes into smal
ijler and smaller vessels, till it reaches
some, under the skin, a thousand times!
! (finer than the finest needle's point; the
' (last flows from small into larger chan
nels, till it empties itself, in a huge
stream, into the heart The arterial
'blood, is pure; the venous full of
wasted tissues. The office of thet
lungs is to cleanse the venous, blood
iwhlch is then thrown buck into
tS&Wv heart, aud after wauls propelled

’ tion of oxygen. To their constituents,,
' the gasses excepted, there is but little:
difference between arterial and venous
: blood.
In a man of average weight, tlie
quantity of blood is about ten pound-.
■ How much of this can be extracted,
‘ without causing loss of life, it ij difli
1 cult always to tell. In the medical
books there is a statement of a hysteri
cs! woman, who was bled one thousand

1 young man, according to Haller, was
! bled seven pom* is und a half daily for .
ten days, and yet survived ; a story al
, (most incredible. The chief constituent i
’ jof blood is water, which forms nearly
1 (one-eighth of the whole. Albumenen-'

tion of seventy parts to a thousand,
i Sugar, Salts, fat and cell matter compose
, the remaindei, the last in the proportion
of one hundred and thirty parts to a

These [cells, or discs, as others evil
rthcm, are the most curious part of the
Uilood. It would be idle to enter into

I upon the subject. Nor is it possible, in (

A good many old fashioned business
| men object to the use of envelopes in
'theircorrespondence, because the post-1
,mark is an important evidence in the;
identification of letters. There is no
way of establishing the connection be
i tween the envelope and the inclosure.
!and of proving that the pnstmaik on
(the farmer gives the date when the let
ter was mailed.
i It w. nld be a convenience if the Gov
ernment would furnish writing paper
stamed in the same way that evelopes
now are, so that the same sheet might:
i bear the communication, the supersciip- j
i tion, and the date of mailing, without,
I the necessity of using the separate,
j stamps.
( It would he a convenience, too, if the!
, Government would furnish stamped en- \
velopes in a greater variety of size and ;
!of quality of the paper. The perfora
tion in the sheets of stamps, enabling
them to be sepaiated without the use of
'scissors, is a valuable improvement.
; There should lie come way by which
the penny post could lie prepaid on Jet - i
ters und papers sent out of the city. A (
(man writing on his own business does
not wish liis correspondent to pay the]
penny post, nor does lie wish to inclose
the petty cost f it, either in money or
