siting fispattf. J. AUGUSTA.GA: c TMJ-UnF Evening, August 10, ISSS. J! .• : s 0" We puWWi a abort Story in this evening's paper, signed L. J. A. The author says it is his first attempt. ) t Matters anJ Things In Cherokee. ! Marietta , Cobs, Co. i: , Aog. 8,1858. i Dispatch Those of your citl- t tint who have left Augusta on account ■ t of the hot weather, and taken up their j < quarters in this section, solemnly asseit ■ that they bare jumped out of the fry- H •ing pan into the fire. Tlie thermometer i has been as high as 90 for several days, \ and the drought is getting very severe I Crops haT« not yet suffered materially, j i but com will b« seriously damaged if ; we do not have rain very soon. Old corn i it coming in freely and sells readily at 42 1-2 a45 cents, A large amount of , ■ Wheat is also offering, and meets with j buyers at 65 to 75 cents. Much of the j Wheat of this region is of very inferior quality. Chickens are very plenty at 8 j to 10 cents apiece, and Eggs at 8 to 10 j cents per dozen. A horrible tragedy was perpetiated j at Powder Springs on Wednesday last. A Mr. Duncan was killed by Mr. Lingo, his brother-in-law, in a most cold blooded and fiendish manner. , Dost an ran away with Lingo's sister, about three months ago, and married ■ her. at which Lingo threatened to kill i him; and en the day the fatal dfeed was . committed, he publicly avowed bis pur 1 pose, and started in pursuit of him about the village. Duncan avoided ] him, and asked the by-standers not to j let Lingo reach him, as he had threat ened to take his life. But Lingo persis-, ted in following him up, with a drawn j sword cane, when Duncan, finding that he could not get away from him, fired a pistol athim, A scuffle then ensued, in ] which Duncan was thrown down, when Lingo stabbed him several times, caus ; ing his death in a few seconds. These are the particulars as we obtained them from rumor, and are believed to be mainly correct. Lingo is in jail in Marietta, chained, and the jail is gaurd ed. If he don't get ont, as most of their criminals do, he will stand a very fair chanoe to pull hemp. Duncan had just served a term in the Penitentiary for stealing a mule. In spite of the clamor in reference to the State Rond, it is admitted on all lands that it is managed more success fully in all its details,'.than it lias era been. There are fewer accidents, less detentions and loss of baggage, and more money paid into the Treasury, than unaer any previous administra tions. And while this lias been done, ; in the midst of a year ot uupreceaen-] ted prostrvtiou in business, the road has ; also been kept in repair, several miles relaid with the best iron, and all jiebts ! paid every month p g —Copious rains prevailed in At lanta, and through Middle Georgia on j Monday. _ ___ Supreme C ourt. This Court commenced its session in : Atlanta on Monday last, all the Judges j present except Judge Lumpkin. The j cases from the Flint Circuit were the i first in order. The Intelligencer says a number of members of the Bar from a distance are present. Celebrated Walcott Case. The celebrated Walcott case, (says the j Charleston Newt) to recover $87,000 brought against him by lawrence,, Stone & Co., which, it has been alleged, had been paid hitu by the above firm for the purpose of influencing votes on the last tariff bill, excites great inter est. Rufus Choate and Judge Abbott] have been retained by Walcott. Ex- Gorernor Gardiner, his former partner, has been summoned to give evidence. This trial will disclose some precious revelations with regard to the means and methods of corruption in use at j Washington by parties who have no I scruples of conscience in trafficing for ; Congressional votes to promote corpor-; ate interests. It will afford a new illus tration of the troth, that the sense of j honor is frequently blunted in parties ! who are associated together under a j •harter and acknowledge emir a divi-j ded responsibility, resorting to practices which they would reject as repugnant, to principles of right and feelings of] delicacy when individually accountable. 1 Explosion or a Soda Fountain.—A soda fountain in the drug store oil Messrs. Knowi.ks & Bbothuk, in St Louis, exploded last Saturday with a tremendous report, causing general de vastation in the establishment, and se riously, if not fatally injurying Mr. Hxnrt Knowles. The fountain was ly ing upon (he floor, and Mr. K. had oc casion to move it, upon doing which the eud was blown out, throwing him with great violence to a distant part of the . floor. His right arm was broken near ' the wrist, the right wrist was disloca- ] ted, a severe cut was inflicted upon the f chin, and a very dangerous wound in I the abdomen, near the groin. Democracy Victorious in Mobil* X’ountt.—The election for Sheriff in the city and county of Mobile, on Monday laat, resulted in the election of James T. Shelton, th# Democratic candidate. 1 ecSye ** I The Atlantic Telegraph. Speaking of the suseessful laying down ; of tbe Atlantic Cable, the N. Y. Herald of! the Cth inst, says : "The grand event j of the age is consummated. The great! problem of the present generation is! solved. The savants of to day may now i exclaim, with greater reason than the j philosopher of old, “Eureka !" The ] Old and the New Worlds are connected i by that most mysterious and wonderful I of all agencies—electricity. Past failures j have only intensified the public joy at i tire present success. The ships of the j third'expedition, which left Queenstown , en the 17th of July, and which started ; from mid-ocean on tne 2!)th, to make ] the fourth attempt to lay the cable, ' arrived at their respective destinations j Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, and Ya- ] lentia Bay, Ireland.on Wednesday even ] ing, and yesteiday the two continents were in connection with each other.— ] No verba] communications, we believe, j as yet, the rmlo being that the electricians should only test the continuity until all ihe airangements for the transmission of messages are made. Those will be completed to-day, we presume, and the European news of to day will probably lie published in the Herald of to-morrow. The first message j that is to be conveyed through tlieso I mysterious wires, now coiled in the ocean's depths, is to Ire a greeting from Queen Victoria to President Buchanan Election Return*. North Carolina. —The returns so far i received indicate that Ellis, the Demo cratic-candidate, will be elected by over i 10,000 majority. | Missouri. -Barrett, the Democratic ] candidate for < ougress in the fit. Louis I District, has been elected over F. V. i Blair, Freesoiler. by a handsome ma j jority. In the second District, Wood ! ron, Democrat, is elected. In the sixth ! district, Pur.u-s, Democrat, is no doubt i elected, and in the seventh, as far ns i heard from, Noel, Democrat, is far ahead of his opponent, • Kentucky.- The returnsindicatethat j this State has gone decidedly Democrat ic, by increased majorities over the voteß given in the Presidential election. —. Canton Copper Mines. The Savannah JSepubltrau, of the 10th inst., says : “ Wearepleased to see the energy with which the Company have gone to work on these mines, and the flattering prospects of a successful in vestment of their capital Messrs, Wav & Tayloii, of this city, have left at our office a bag of the ore, a sample from n ton’s weight of it now here and ready for shipment. In its present state of preparation for market, it is worth SIBO per ton, and the Company are now get ting out that amount daily with their present machinery. They purpose to increase the power at an early day so !as to enable them to get otjfeflfcd pre i pare for market two tons per day, vai ] licit at suiio, Aapo-imenof the ore call ; be seen on our Round Table." .». I Travelling In the Olden Time. j The Philadelphia iVorth American ! quotes some curious and suggestive pas sages from the journal, lately published !in Littell's Living Age, of Mrs. Knight, 1 who, in 1704-5, performed a journey from Boston to New York, transacting ] business in the latter city, and at various | points on the route. The time spent in j the saddle, for she travelled ou horse . hark, was about four weeks, two in the I journey out, and two in the return.— I And the whole time occupied was five I months, to accomplish what could now ha effected in as many days Scientific Expedition.— The steam ship -‘Moses Taylor," which left New York on Thursday last for Aspinwall, took among the passengers a party of scientific gentlemen, who are bound to ; Peru to make observations of the great solar eclipse in September: they go out under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution, and are furnished with a free passage by the IT.l T . S. Mail steam ship, the Panama Railroad, and the |, British) fitoam Navigation Companies. —— j Citizens’ Bank or Memphis, --Messrs. ]S. P. Walker and D. B. Turner, late ] .“residents of the Citizens’Bank of Mem : phis, publish a card in the Memphis pa pers, stating that they will undertake |to apply their individual means and i property to make good any deficiency to : noteholders or credit ora of the Bank -- ; The Memphis Bulletin nays that Mr. Walker’s means, together with the as i»ets, are ample to perform what ho l promises. *•••* Two hales of the new crop of cotton were received in Tallahassee, Fla., on the sth inst.
