An Old Lady. —Mrs. Elizabeth Mill ing Jackson, relic 1 of the late Major Wm. A man named Joseph Welch, a labor-; jcr in the employ of the Central Rail-; ; road Company, died suddenly yester-i i day under the following circumstances;: j It appears he bad been subject to fre-t queat attacks of chills and fever,: and feeling tho chills coming on him in tin- morning, before he went to work,! he procured a pint of beer and 25 cents; worth of quinine, that is, 15 grains, and! mixed them both veil together; be then cut up an onion and with a tca spoonfnl of salt put it in the mixture and drank it off. He then went to woik, apparently in his usual health 1 ithe dose having averted the chills) but about 0 o’clock he complained of being sick, and discharged hi*stomach, which, he said relieved him very much. Get ting rapidly worse, be was taken home! and a physician sent for, who arrived! barely in time to see him depart this; life. Coroner lylen held an inquest on the; body in the afternoon, when the jury; brought in a verdict ot death by expo-: sure to the sun. The only evidence the jury had to bring in a verdict upon, was lir. Arnold, who attended the man in his last moments, aud v>ho gave it as his opinion that death was caused by sun stroke; he accounts for the dis charge of the stomach by saying the salt taken in such a large quantity act ed as an emetic —Net'. A Woman Mdrdrrsd.—The body of Mrs. Ivey, wife of Giles Ivey, of this city, was discovered on Sunday ufter . n ion, near the track of the Muscogee Railroad, about two miles aud a half from the depot, horribly mutilated by stabs with a knife or dirk. There were, we understand, seven stabs in her back and breast. Suspicion attaches to her husband, who left home with her in the morning and returned without her, when, it is said, he attempted to kill [ bis child, but was prevented by a; neighbor.
