Abating Hispatcf).' AUGUSTA.*" Saturday Eve K, August St, iS3W. New Book*. Sew AmericanCycl&pkdia.— We have alluded to the comprehensive plan of | this great work, and to its importance as a compendium of useful information. When we consider that no complete - Cyclopedia has been issued in this conn- j tryffir 30 years, which time has been; signalized by events more important! than those that have characterised any l peiiodofthe nineteenth century, the j utility, as well as the necessity of such j a work is apparent. During thati time we have perfected our railroad 1 and steamboat system, made numerous startling inventions —tied the two worlds together with the telegraph, and vindicated our claim to the front rank, among the nations of the earth. Alli the leading characters and incidents of | this marvelous progress are accurately brought to view in this new work. In j addition to this, it is more complete in! -every department, and for every period, i than its predecessors. This volume embraces subjects inclu ded in alphabetical order from B. E. A. j to B. R. 0., and among the interesting! biographical sketches contained iu this j number are one of Beaumarchais, Thos. A’Bechet, Beethoven, the Beecher Fam ily, James Gordon Bennett, Col. Ben ton, Beranger, Bishop Berkeley, Sain: Bernard, John Bigelow, Editor of the Evening Post .Bienne rhasset, Lady Bless ington, Rev. George Boardman. CoL Theodorie- filaad-, of Virginia, Louis Blanc. Boccaccio, Francis P Blair, Boli var. Bonaparte Family. Bonuportx-s of Baltimore, Daniel Boone. Vice-Presi dent Breckinridge. James and Erastus Brooks, Editors of the Express, Robert Browning. Elizabeth BarrettJirowning, Charlotte Bronte, Fredrika Eremer, ami numerous others. Lewyers, farmers, mechanics, mer chants, military men, clergymen and physicians will find a rich store of vari ed knowledge in its pages, and indeed : every man of intelligence should have it in his library. Bex.tamln G. Lipdox, Madison, is the agent for this State, and Trios. Richards & Son are local agents for Augusta, and for Richmond county. Edinburg Kevierv. The July number of this sterling and ever-welcome visitor has arrived, with a table of contents both varied and interesting. Fever In Charleston# We were shown a letter this morning, from a responsible party in Charleston, stating that the Yellow Fever was pre vailing to an alarming extent, and in a very malignant form in that city. Out of seven taken to Roper Hospital, five had died, and the other two were very low. As our exchanges in that city give no information in reference to this matter, we deem it proper to publish informa tion obtained from private sources. We find the above in the Augusta Dispatch, of Wednesday evening, and take occasion from it to ask our ex changes and our country readers, once more, to refer to and receive our official reports. “ responsible ” gentlemen may hear many rumors, and may deem it proper to communicate them, but we do not understand it to be the duty of editors to give publicity to such ru mors. Os course those who are alarm ed themselves will seek to vindicate their apprehensions; and "rumors,” at such a time, are in abundance, not only at a distance but even near at hand. As the Augusta Dispatch deems it ne cessary to eke out our reports, by pri vate letters, we add the facts concern ing the Roper Hospital cases. Sixteen casesof yellow fever—chiefly foreigners of very recent arrival —have been admitted into the Roper Hospital, since the 11th inst. Os these cases, four were in the fourtli day at admis sion, and one died in an hour and a half after admission. The deaths in all, under these circum stances, have been six, leaving ten cases there still under treatment, pome of whicli are iu such a stage that no opin-j ion can yet be pronounced. To any one acquainted with the habits and circumstances of the class of popu j lation which furnishes the cases admit-! ted to Roper Hospital, it need not bo’ stated that the relative mortality in such cases is no criterion whatever of the character of the disease under other conditions, or of the condition of the j city, as regards the health and safety of ■ any persons of Southern acclimation. ' We trust that any information which our exchanges deem proper to give, will be accompanied hereafter by its authority, if it is designed to contro vert any publication that is made offi cially on authority. We find the above in the Charleston Cburier of yesterday morning, and we are much gratified to obtain a full and j . explicit statement of the sanitary con- I dition of that city. The intercourse between Charleston and Augusta is so intimate that our citizens feel a deep and constant interest in the extent to J which the fever is prevailing ; and we felt called on to give the statement of reliable parties to our readers. We , are also pleased to observe that the •‘report” “eked out" through our correspondent is corroborated by “ the | facts” of the Courier ; but we assure'J our cotemporary that we would always much prefer to look to its columns for ■ information, and trust it will keep its; readers fully posted in reference to the health of the city, and thus prevent the necessity of relying upon private sources for information. The Bice Harvest.—Wc learn that several planters on the river commenced harvesting their rice this week. The prospect is flattering for an abundant yield.- Savannah Republican, 2if! imt. j The Catholic Chim-h In the P. S. Lender this heading we find somo cu i lions and interesting statistics of the j rapid growth of this church iu the j United States. Fifty years Ugo there were in the whole union, utie diocese,, two Bishops, sixty-eight priests, eighty i churches, two ecclesiastical Institutions, one College aud two Female Academics. At the present time there are said to be forty one Dioceses, thirty-nine Bishops and two Apostolic vicars, eighteen hnn j dred and seventy-two Priests, two tiious j and and fifty-tSiree churches, besides j eight hundred rcid twenty-nine stations, | thirty-five eoclesiastical Institutions, : twenty-nine'Colleges, and one hundred land thirty-four Female Academies.— | The Ileraldsnya, taking the number of j Priests and churches as a basis of com putation, the Catholic church has in creased within the last half century, seven times as fast as the population. This is truly a wonderful ‘increase, and it will be news to many of our read j ers. The Herald remarks : "These are remarkable facts and sta tistics, and may well challenge the as ; tonishment and consideration of a'.l ! men. To what cause is this unparalel ! led growth of the Catholic church in I this country to be attributed t The principal cause, of course, is to. be : found in the immense emigration here ! from the Catholic countries of Europe : i i but still the Catholic emigration shouldl ] tear to that of all others the propor ! tiou of twenty-eight to one, to make! | that the only cause -and statistics will show that no such disproportion exists Still, the immense influx of Catholics: to our shores must be set down as the prepondeiatiug cause for this wonderful growth of the Catholic church here.” A Dumper. This newspaper has not far from one thousand t ,V*a Jide subscribers, exclusive of the exchange list, which embraces the principal journals of 1 this and the adjoining States. The printing ma -1 terials are almost altogether new, most of them having been bought within three months past; and the office, excepting those very few which use machinery run by steam, is believed to be better fitted up with conveniences and facilities than any other in the State. The mechanical ex ecution of the sheet, however, will show for it self the capacities of the office. The paper is doiug an unusually good business, has a fine run of advertising patronage, and, in fact, could hardly be mismanaged so as not to make money. MORSE’S INVIGORATING COR DIAL.—The dyspeptic patient, whose stomach has lost the power of duly converting food into a life-sustaining element, is relieved by a single i course of this extraordinary tonic. The gastric, fluid re acquires its solvent power, and the crude 1 nutriment, which was a load and a burthen to the sufferer, while his digestive organization was j paralyzed and unstrung, becomes, under the wholesome revolution created in the system, the basis of activity, strength and health. The nervous sufferer, while tormented by the ! acute, physical agony of Neuralgia, Tic-doloreux or ordinary headache, afflicted with vague ter rors. wakened by periodical fits, threatened with paralysis, borne down and dispirited by thht ! terrible lassitude which proceeds from a lack of nervous energy, or experiencing any other pain or disability arising from the unnatural condition I of the wonderful machinery which connects ev ery member with the source of sensation, mo tion and thought—derives immediate benefit from the use of this Cordial, which atonce calms, invigorates and regulates the shattered nervous organization. Females who have tried it are unanimous in declaring the Elixir to be the greatest boon that * woman has ever received from the hands of medical men. > Morse’s Invigorating Elixir has a direct, im mediate and astonishing effect upon the appetite While it renews the strength of the digestive powers it creates a desire for the solid material which is to be subjected to their action. As an . appetiser it has no equal in the Pharmacopia. j If long life and the vigor necessary to its en- | joyinent are desirable, this medicine is indeed of precious worth Its beneficial effects are not confined to either < sex or to any age. The feeble girl, the alliog wife, the listless, enervated youth, the overworn man of business, the victim of nervous depres sion, the individual suffering from general dc - bility or from the weakness of a single organ i willall find immediateand permanent relief from I the use of this incomparable reno.-ator. To 1 those who have a predisposition to paralysis it will prove a complete and unfailing safe guard against that terrible m iladv. There are many perhaps who have so trifled with their constitu tion tliat they think themselves beyond the reach of nffedicine. Let not even those despair. The Elixir deals with disease as it exists, without re ference to the causes, and will not only remove ( the disorder itself, but rebuild the broken con stitution LOSS OF MEMORY, confusion, giddiness, rush of blood to tho head, melancholy, mental debil ity, hysteria, wretchedness, thoughts of self-de s ruction, fear of insanity, hypochondriasis, dys pepsia, general prostration, Irritability, nervous ness, inability to sleep, distaste incideat to fe males, decay of the propagating functions, hys teria, monomania, vague terrors, palpitation of the heart, impotency, constipation, etc., from whatever cause arising, it is, if there is any reli ance to be placed on human testimony, absolute ly lnfiuubie. CAUTION.—Dr. Morse’s Invigorating Cordial has been counterfeited by some unprincipled persons. In future, all the genuine Cordial will have the proprietor’s sac simile pasted over the cork of each bottle, and the following words blown in glass : Dr. Morse’s Invigorating Cor dial, C. H.
