Editor Dispatch :—Allow me a cor ner in your paper to say a word in reply tv* an article which appeared in the Chronicle. Sc Sentinel Saturday morning, in which some novel intimations were thrown out in reference to the Upper Koute North, via Columbia and Char lotte. While it is very gratifying to observe the tacit admission of the edi tor of that paper, that the travel has been diverted from its old channel via Wilmington, it looks a little strange that he should attribute the change to the “plausibility of drummers;” for certainly no device has been wanting, by the Agents of the lower route, to place all the claims of their line before the people, and to delude the public into the belief that it is not inferior in ail respects to tho “Central Line.” In reply to the allusion of the cor respondent of the Mail, in the same ar ticle, in reference to the dust and the eating houses of our road, permit me to observe, that if the lower route has been free from dust during the late dry weather, it has enjoyed a very remarka ble exemption ; and we do not think the proprietors of the eating houses on our route would fear to compare their tables with those of their brethren of the “cool and delightful piney woods.” Thanking the editor for his very dis interested compliment to the drummers of the route I represent, I take the lib erty to tender the assurance to the traveling public, that nothing shall be wanting in the accommodations and comforts afforded, to cause a single re gret that they have been induced by the manifold advantages of our route or by “the plausibility of its drum mers," to abandon the swamps and dan gerous trestles of the old line of travel. Francis Thomas Pentecost was born on the 14th March, 1821, and died at his residence in | Rome, Georgia, on the 12th of August, 1858, ’ leaving a wife and two small children to mourn his loss, and many friends who sincerely svinpa-! < thise with them. ’ , Mr. Pentecost was a man of marked traits. He was amiable and just, wiih a remarkable degree i of friendship aud moral and physical courage— the trait perhaps u ost conspicuous and most rare was that he “ attended closely to his own business, and let other people’s alone.” , It is the consolation of his surviving friends i that “ God is merciful,” and his sudden death ! enforces the warning Re ye ready also.” A Friend.
