Cotton Prospects. For some weeks pa-t the hope has been indulged that the present year’s: cotton crop, notwithstanding the over flow of the Mississippi, would be at least an average one. Within tiie last: week or two, however, accounts of a 1 most unfavorable nature have reached ’ us from many sections. Much damage is being done to the crops by the rust and worms, and as August and Septem ber are regarded as the most critical j period of the cotton season, and as the ; damage has begun so early in August, j and as the disasters of cotton seem to! increase as the country grows older, we j fear that all calculations of a good crop will be disappointed. Some few will doubtless make good crops -for that is | always the case-but speaking general ly, things begin to look badly for a good crop. On Thursday night a difficulty occur-! red at the “ Kldorado” Billiard Saloon,, in this city, between Mr John Warden j and Thomas Beynolds, in which the. form-", was severely cur by the latter, tint it is hoped not totally. '5 c are in formed that Warden is cut in thirteen places, -some of the cuts being in vital parts, but not deep enough to produce death. The difficulty, we learn, origi nated between Reynolds and another gentleman, who being a cripple, War den remonstrated with Reynolds, which provoked harsh words resulting in blows, and -the cutting as above stated. Reynolds was arrested, and brought be fore the committing magistrates yester day, and after a healing of the case was required to give bond for his appearance ; at the next Kupejjor Court in the sum of SSOO, in default of which he was; committed to jail.— Columbus Sun. ”1»' ml. _ jisNDiTioN of a Fucitive.— Col. Oaretr. -Sheriff of Charleston District, under re-1 quiftition from Gov. Bragg, of North Carolina, yesterday delivered over to the Sheriff of Robeson County, in that State, Henneth Falk, who was arrested a few weeks since as a fugitive from - justice. Col. Faik, with two others, j, were indicted for the murder of a negro ru in, but previous to trial effected their : escape from the Lr.mberton jail. The, fact that Col. Terrible Death of aLady.— The Mad- 1 ison t Iris.,) Argue contains the followiag 1 particulars of the terrible death of Mrs. Miller, wife of the Postmaster at Sweet Home, iff Dane County : Last Sunday she started on horseback, either to church or a neighborhood vis-, it. She was discovered about two hours afterward in a iane through which shej was passing, quite dead, her clothing torn entirely from her body, except one stocking, and her right leg terribly smashed and mangled. The supposi tion was Hint the horse had thrown her and dragged her a considerable distance by her stirrup foot. Fatal Accident.- Peter Wallace, liv ing in Kanawha county, Ya., died in a well on the 2d inst., from the mephitic! air therein. He lost his life by going iuto the well to rescue another man who was overcome by the foul air. The res cue was effected, but before the rope could be let down again Wallace himself I 1 was dead. J Destruction of Grain.— The Empire} grain elevator at Oswego, N. Y., was destroyed by fire on Friday morning, i with grain stored in it amounting to i about 00,000 bushels, nearly two-thirds of which was corn. The elevator was valued at from thirty to forty five thousand dollars, and was insured for about §22,000. The grain was mostly Insured. Total loss estimated at $75,000. All the insurance is in Eastern offices. Whole Family Poisoned --Tiro dead. —The family of Mr. James Musgrave, of Stillwater, Wis., were poisoned a few. days since, by eating mushrooms, or toad stools, resulting in the death of ! two of the children—aged seven and j ten years. The parents will probably } recover from the effects of the poison. | Naval.—Lieut. A. N. Medili, First Comptroller of the T. S. Treasury, on Monday, again de railed against Connick & Ramsey’s mail | claim of $1,800,000. The claimants ! made a conditional contract, in 1853, ■ for the conveyance of the mail from Vera Cruz to Acapulco. The claim was for five years’ pay and damages. } At Batavia, the B. N. Y. and Eirie and N. Y. Central roads occupy the de-i I pot in common. The former company j | undertook to put up a partition in the} baggage room, Friday, but as fast as; the ■ arpenters brought in the lumber,! the Central employees threw il out,and! ■ the attempt to put up the partition had! i to be desisted from.
