LOCAL. MATTERS* !
Augusta Cotton Fador^,
This extensive establishment, it will ,
tie seen by advertisement, has changed
hands, and is now in sueccfsftl \opcra-
tion. and prepared to till all orders for
floods manufactured by the Company. ~
The change is a good one, and as its 1
management is in few hands, and un
der tlie supervision of 1V». E. Jackson,
Esq . one of our experienced and suc
cessful merchants, it will no doubt at-,
ford additional employment to many',
operatives, and prove profitable to its
owners. Success to them.
Book Keeping anil Writing.
Kr. Pbi-ot gives his third and lust
tourse of lessons on the above import-,
ant branches, in this city, commencing
on Monday evening, 30tli inst. We can
only reiterate the advice we have here
tofore given to the young men of our
city—if you wish to make yourself a
competent book keeper and writer, at- (
tend this course—the money you pay J
will be well spent, and you will find it i
so in after days.
The River.
(jar river is getting low, and at the
present time none but light draft boats
can reach our wharves. The heavier
class of lioatshaveto lighten atTwigg’s
liar. From Twigg's bar down the river
: s in good navigable order. "Wie Swan,
in going down and the Stark in coming j
np. both got aground but were got off
without receiving any damage.
N. Your Board or Health.—Schoon
er Wagner, Charleston, ordered to dis
charge cargo at quarantine, cotton to
be put on barges, rice to be lightered
to the city, and mahogany and iron to
lie retained on board for ballast.
Schooner Kate Stewart, Capt. Mather, \
arrived August 20, from Charleston, .
with cotton, rosin and flour, to Scranton j
& Tallman. Reports all hands well.—l
Detained for observation, fumigation, 1

On motion, Charleston was declared '
an infected port, and notice of the same j
was ordered to be given to the pilots.— !
All sailing vessels hereafter from
Charleston will lie detained in lower
quarantine for ventilation.— Commercial'
Adcertiter.
A Reminiscence.—The Indianopolis
Jmtrnal gives an interesting reminiscence!
of the early days of telegraphing and of:
Congressional legislation for Morse's
benefit. Gov. David Wallace was a
Whig representative from that district
in IS4I and 18 13, and was on the special
committee, to consider Mr. Morse's peti-1
tion for $40,000. His easting vote in 1
the commitee saved the measure, but j
v:en he returned to his constituents
they were so indignant at him forwast-j
ing the people’s money “for such utter !
foolery’ that his opponent.walked easi
ly ove-r the course.
''sroRTCNAT* Occtbben E.—Wo re
pot to learn that Mr. Henry Long, a
young man some twenty-two years of
age and sou of \V. E. Long, Esq., of this
seitv. disappeared suddenly from a sail-!
icy boat near Thunderbolt, Tuesday !
cvi iiirig last, and under circumstances
that warrant the belief that lie fell, or
was knocked overboard and drowned.— j
Sin vmah Republican, 26th in*i.
Look out for Hocus Bank Notes.—An j
attempt was made by a woman, Tuesday
night, to pass off two twenty-dollar
bills of “The Insuamce Bank "of 00-i
lambus," located at Macon. There is
no such bank in existence, and our!
readers would do well to be on the look- j
out for notes of this character, as the .
person who attempted to puss them says
she received them in this city.—Sa
i,<u v h Republican, 2G.’A iml.
An Ohio editor recently attempted to j
describe the powerful effects of the i
warm weather, and iiere is one in-:
“A small negro boy injudiciously
leaned sip against the sunny side of the
house yesterday, and fell asleep. In a
few minutes lie began to soften, and in
three quarters of an hour he run all
over the yard. His mother dipped him
up in a wash tub.
The fc-HANDsoN or Benedict Arnold.—
The London correspondent es the Evau
gelist, in giving an account of a three
daysj revival meeting at -the town of
Barnett, says:
Among those present and who spoke,
was Dr. Hamilton, the eminent divine
of the Scotch Presbyterian church in
London, a»d author of “Life in Earn
est." Rev, Mr. Arnold, an estimable
and young Episcopcl brother, also took
an .active part, and added greatly to the
interest and spirituality of the meet
ings. You will be interested with t,lie
•fact that he is the grandson of Arnold,
the American traitor, and the only
male heir who survives him. He has a
•sister married, and they inherit a large
tract of land in Canada from their
.graudfat her.

Tia: Whatuee and Crocs.—We re
y.jt.io have to announce that for some
time-past, in this locality, there has been
no rain and the corn orop is materially !
injured—especially late upland corn.— '
'Some v.ii'i have good opportuniiies of
knowing, think that it will fall short at
least one third from what it promised a
month ago Potatoes, and eyen fruits j
are suffering very much. It becomes j
iiie farmer* aud others to be asspariug
with their grain and roughness as they .
may have another hard year.—Chrtlanoo

The crowd of visitors on Lookout con
tinues to be quite large and coritc-nted.
‘ibis will likely tG be the case until the
epidemics prevailing in some of the
southern cities subside. A number of
our borne citizens are enjoying the in
vigorating breezes and respite from the
wear and tear of their usual avocations.
What a luxury to us harnessed-rubbed
editors to be thus highly privileged.—

The Cable and Sn-Ipture.
The success in laying the Atlantic ca
ble (says the New York Herald ) has im
pressed many with the idea that the
jyear 1838 will ever remain a memorable f
I era in the history of the world ; but
!a little overhauling of the Scriptures !,
will show-that the idea, so far from be )
ing new or original, is simply a fulfill- c
meat of prophecy, and carrying out of •
suggestions made by the inspired wri- j
ters. We append a few extracts to con i
vince tire sceptical:
Psalms, xix : 14.—Their line is gone
Out through all the earth, and their J
words to the end of the world.
Jon, xxxviii.: 30.—Canst thou send;
lightnings, that they may go, and say
unto tliee here we are ?
Revelations, x.: I.—And I saw an-j,
other mighty angel come down trom ~
heaven, clothed with a cloud : and a
rainbow was upon bis head, and bis face j
was as it were the sun, and his feet as ;'
pillars of lire.
2. And he had in his hand n little ],
book open; and be set his right foot
upon the sea and his-left foot upon tlie I
earth.
3. And cried with a loud voice, as i
when a lion roareth ; and when he had !
cried, seven thunders uttered their
voices. • 1
*4. And when the seven thunders bad
uttered their voices, I was about to
write, aud 1-heard a voice from heaven,
| saying unto me, seal up these things ]
which the seven thunders uttered, and
write them not. i
5. And the angel which I saw stand ',
upon the sea and upon the earth lifted i
up his hand to heaven.
fi. And sware by Him that liveth for
. ever and ever, who created heaven and
: the things that therein are, aud the
I earth and the things that therein are, j
and the sea and the things which are
! therein, that there should he time no j
longer. I
Job, xxxvii.: 3.- - He directeth it (his |
voice)’under the whole heaven, and his |
lightning to the ends of the earth.
Jon, xxvn.: 25.—When He had made ,
a decree for the rain, and away for the j
lightning and the thunder.
Jon, xxxviii.: 25.-Who hath divi
ideda watercourse for the overflowing [
,jf waters, or away for the lightning of;
. thunder.
■! Proverbs, vjii.: 29.—When He gave
1 10 the sea his decree that the waters
should not pass his command.
The coincidence of the seven thun- 1
ders and seven voices in the Evange-j
list's vision, with the seven wires of the I
1 cable; the several allusions to the “way j
lor the lightning the inquiry whether
the lightning can be made to speak;
and the direct reference to tlie insula
! tion of the cable by giving a decree to
the sea, that “tlie waters should not
■ pass his command,’’ought at once to
; settle the question of priority of the
'idea, concerning which there is now
much wrangling in the newspapers.—
I Verily, “there is nothing uew under
the sun."
“Tiie Mother of Waters.” — Lieut.
; Habersham, in his letter from China to
' the Philadelphia Ledger, asserts that the
i Mississippi river, which we call the
“Father of Waters.*’ is not to be com :
1 pared to the iungtse Iviang river, to
which he applies the name of “Mother
of Waters.” Jn proof of this he corn-
I pares the width and volume of the two
i streams. The Mississippi opposite New
■ i Orleans is not quite GOO yards wide, with
a mean depth of 100 feet, and a mean
1 velocity of nearly 1 1-2 miles per hour.
| Thus a"body of water 1 1-2 miles long,
I GOO yards wide, and 100 feet thick, is
1 1driven into the Gulf of Mexico every
i hour. A little more than one hundred
! miles from the mouth of_ the Yangtse
Kiang ithe Sun of the Sea) is located the
. citv of Kiang-Yin. The liver here is
1,900 sards w jd e , has an average depth
of 99 feet, and a mean velocity of two
. miles per hour. Thus we have, lie re
' marks, a body of water two miles long,
i 1,900 vards wide and 99 feet thick,
! hourly" urged into the bosom of the
Yellow Kea. Compare this volume
j with the first, and it will be found to lie t
■ 1 almost double.
| The Cable. —Messrs. Tiffany & Co., j
|jewellers in New York city, are render
ing their new enterprise of selling the:
I I remnant of the cable contemtible, by!
mounting the pieces in brass. We cut. |
the following from their advertisa
’: ment : ;
1 1 “In ordertoplace itwithin the reach of '
’jail classes, and that every family in the j
': United States may possess a sped-1

I !curiosity, they propose to cut the. cubin'
: into pieces of four inches in length, and
l mount them neatly with brass ferules.
| Each piece will be’ accompanied with a
i i copy-righted fao simile certificate of Cy- j
i jTUS W. Field, Ksq., that it is cut from I
■ | the genuine cable. Twenty miles of it j
! have been actually submerged, and ta
' keu up from the bottom el the ocean.
: This will be sold in precisely the cendi
i tion in which the great cable now lies
1 1 in the bed of the Atlantic. Retail price,

OUR CHEAP QUAKER CITY SEW
DIG MACHINES TRIUMPHANT.
‘VTTK are continually hearing, from
T T reliable sources, that the Agents of some
high-priced Sewing Machines are crying down ;
our reasonable priced ones as humbugs : that
they cannot be made to work, and that parties
who purchased ours have thrown them aside,
and bought theirs in many oases. Now, we de
nounce each audf* all of these reports’os false,’
from whatever source they come.
The truth is, these opposition gentlemen very j
well know that they must kill off our low-priced
Machines, or the enormous profit made on theirs
will be exposed, much against their intent—,
bonce their laborious efforts to create the im
pression that our Machines are worthless hum-;
bugs.
To satisfy the minds of those who may desire
to purchase, but have not the opportunity of per
sonally examining and deciding upon its merits,;
wc have taken occasion to call on a few who
have our Machines in use. for their true and can-1
did opinion o’ them. They have readily and j
cheerfully responded, and tor the frank and pub j
lie expression of their sentiments, we tender
them our best thunks, and assure them and oth-:
ers. who may be influenced thereby, that our,
efforts shall ever be given to merit and retain;
the good opinion therein expressed.

all who are in want of the article, to call and see
yours before pay ing from sloo.to $l5O for a Ma
