We regret to learn that Dr. W. S. Harden, of Bryan county was shot on Thursday morning last, by his step son, George U Lane, a young man between •17 and 18 years of age. The weapon used was a doubled barrelled shot gun, from which a full charge of buck-shot was discharged into the body of Dr. H.. taking effect in the side and back, just above the hip, some of the shot passing entirely through the body The de ceased survived about an hour attev he was shot, and died calmly, anil in the full possession of his mental faculties. Dr. Harden was well known and high ly reflected in this city, where he has relatives and numerous friends, who will i'C pained to hear of his violent and untimely death.— Savannah -Va«». 28lA ins!. > Found. —The body of Mr. Henry Long, who was drowned on Tuesday last in the Thunderbolt river, was found yesterday. — It- Interesting Reminiscences.—' One of• the most interesting features of the re-1 cent Atlantic Telegraph celebration at ; Boston, says the Boston // raid, was the illumination of the old John -Hancock mansion, on I’eaoon street. The old gentleman, (nephew of the Revolution ary patriot,) who now owns and occu pies the ptemises, gave directions that in honor of the event, even the light ning rods planted by Franklin himself on his mansion, should afford some in dications of the joy universally felt on the accomplishment of this great un dertaking The mansion was illumina ted from the floor to the attic, and the same candle sticks were used which were employed to celebrate the estab lishment of peace in 1785, in 1815, and the introduction of Cochituate water in 1848. Spit Against a School Faecher. — The colored population of Providence, R, 1., have commenced a suit against Mr. Gadding, principal of one of the grammar schools of that city, tor re fusing the son of a colored man the privilege of entering the school as a pu pil. The father of the colored boy is a tax payer, and he and his friends are determined to test the question wheth er colored children can enter white schools. Able counsel have been se cured. Fob Frazer River.— The steamship Hermann sailed for Itiode Janeiro, Val paraiso, Panama, San Francisco, and Frazei River from New Yon; on Mon day. She took out 773 passenger*.— The Hermann has coal and provisions enough on board to last until her arri val at San Francisco. A vast concourse of people assembled on the wharf to witness her departure, and they cheer ed the steamer in a vociferous manner. A Wrong Guess.—A physician going down State street with a friend of itis, said to him, '' Let ns avoid that pretty little woman yon sec there on the left ! she knows me, and casts on me looks of indignation. Peach Leaves ton V tvT. —Mrs. Dan iel R. Mitchell, of Rome, Ga., says the Rome Courier, has discoveted that peach leaves are superior to hops for making yeast. The bread made from it is quite as light and equally well flavored. We understand that the yeast is made in the same way. except that dried peach leaves arc used instead of hops. The Great Chess Game. —The score in the game of chess between Mr. Morphy and Mr. Lowenthal in London, accord ing to tlie English papers, uow stands, Morpltv five, Lowenthal two, drawn one. The last game lost by Mr. Morphy is spoken of by the London Era as a hard fought game of sixty moves, ending with a contest of pawns, during which Mr Lowenthal took one hour to delibe rate upon a move. The game would have been drawn hail not Mr Morphy made an error in the combination, at the elose of which, skilful advantage was taken by his opponent, who tints won the game. The Secretary of the Interior has ad dressed a communication to the XVar Department proposing the establish ment of a new military post at Wash ita village, for the protection of the northern frontiers-of Texas and the Indian reservation west of Arkansas, from the attacks of the Camanches. A few days since, a young daughter of Geo. S. Underhill, of Chester, N. H-. was picking blackberries, and was bit ten by a spider on Iter great toe. The foot swelled, extending up her leg; erysipelas set in, and she died. Everybody has heard of Buncombe speeches, and therefore they will not be surprised to hear that Samuel A. Buncombe recently made a speech at St. Paul, Minnesota, in honor of the Atlantic Telegraph.
