Advertisements for the Evem.vo Dispatch must be handed in by eleven o'clock in the forenoon, in order to appear the same day. ~LOCAL MATTERS. Health of Augusta. Our city scxtou reports thirty nine in terments during the past month, of which seven were brought to the city. Os the deaths in the city, seven were adults—the remainder children. The Board will hereafter meet weekly. New Advertisements. J. A. A.\*9i.ey & Co.—This House is a branch of the House of Wacox, Hand| & Ansley—and its operations are con fined principally to a General Commis sion and Produce Business. The head of the firm has had much experience in! this line of business, and those consign ing produce, will find strict attention paid to their interests. By another col umn it will be seen that they offer for sale heavy stocks of Bagging, Rope, Ba con &c. Alarm of Fire. Last evening between 7 and 8 o’clock, there was an alarm of fire, caused by the burning out of a chimney at the residence of W. H. Crash, on Reynold street. It had been raining and blow ing previously, and at the time of the alarmjthe wind was very high. Although there was no alarm given by the city bell, several of our fire engines were quickly on the spot, well manned and ready for action. The Weather. For a week past wc have had fine yreather, the mornings and evenings cool. Last evening we had a fine show er, accompanied with heavy thunder, sharp lightning and wind. The dust, which was getting annoying, has been laid. The atmosphere is clear and this morning the air is delightful. Phrenology. It will be seen that Dr. Barker will deliver a Free Lecture at Masonic Hall, on Tuesday evening. We have seen him favorably spoken of by our ex changes as an excellent lecturer and a competent and experienced Phrenolo gist- __________ The State Hoad. We are allowed to extract the fol lowing paragraph from a letter to a gentleman of this city. Its writer I speaks "by authority,” and the facts! stated may he considered, in every re ] spect, reliable. They speak volumes in! favor of the present management of 1 this great State work : “It is gratifying to me to lie able to say to you that the W. & A. Railroad is now in most excellent condition, and is doing well. We have just sent to the: treasury 833,000 of the uet earnings of this mouth. We have also retained! SIO,OOO to $16,000 of this month’s earn ing to add to our fund for the purchaso of new iron, to lay down such parts of the track as are becoming woru. Dr. Philips will go to New York, in a few days, to’yu.'thns.e.4oo tons of new iron We have the cash to pay for it. This will make 800 tons we have purchased and paid for this year. We have spent SIO,OOO in repairs of the track this month. Every debt and the wages of each hand is promptly paid monthly. “We have already paid into thetreas ury at Milledgoville $150,000 in the last six months. There can be no difficulty in keeping up these payments, or in keeping the road in fine order."— Sav. A T ews, illi inet. . -•••- Tornado in New York.— A destruc five tornado recently visited several of the towns in Ulster county, N. Y., de stroying everything in its course, tear ing up trees, demolishing buildings, fences, and blowing down dwellings. At Dewittville the houses of Mr. P. Smith and Mr. Hoyt were prostrated. Mrs. Hoyt and her three children were at the house of Mr. Smith, on a visit. Mrs. Hoyt was instantly killed, and Mrs. Smith so seriously injured that she died a few hours after. A lady named Hornback was also so injured that her life is despaired of. Three children of Mrs. Hoyt were badly hurt. Scoar Planting in Florida. -An AI abama cotemporary informs us that some of the sugar planters of Louisiana are turning their attention to that part of South Florida from which the In dians have been lately removed. It is \ thought that in a few years it may he made an important and profitable sugar produciug region. Perhaps, too, it is said, coifee will do well there. The “Cable” has been a singular piece of good luck to the New York jewellers, who were suffering terribly of the hard times, till they thought of an expedient to facilitate sales by working up the unused cable into breast-pins and finger rings. They purchas»d it for $1,500 per mile, and sell it as jewelry at the rate of $160,000 per mile. A» long as thre is a demand for these kinds of keep sakes, the cable, it is presumed, .will last, and if it does not, there is a manufactory of the article close at baud whence the supply could he kept up. It is said that one single firm in Phil adelphia expends annually upwards of one hundred thousand dollars in adver tising patent medicines, anil that the total sales of articles of this kind man nfactured |n Philadelphia amount to a million of dollars. Inacountyin Central Mississippi, a party of nine men contributed to pur chase a barrel of whisky for their use daring the term of court. In three weeks eight of the nine were dead, while the ninth made a narrow escape Th» Tebauntepec Railroad Company have sustained a heavy loss in the foun dering at sea of their steamer Poydras Many fear that this accident will re tard the opening of this transit route from New Orleans to San Francisco. The statement of the Evangelist that Rev. Mr. Arnold, a clergyman of Eng land, is the grandson and only mule heir of Benedict Arnold, is a mistake, there being a grandson in Canada, putaed Cborg* Washington Arnold Hon. A. It. XV right Endorsing Doug- Rome, Ga,, Aug. 23,1868. My Dear Sir: Your letter is at hand. I was glad to hear from you again, and from the metropolis. It is very strange that any Democrat should desire Mr. Douglas’ defeat. There is not an im pulse of my soul that is not with him m his contest with the Black Republi cans. Douglas is a true man to his country. The difference about Lccomp ton, I regard us a difference about facte —not principles. We all agreed the peo ple should form their institutions to suit themselves. The question was, had they done so in the Lecompton con stitution ? We who supported that constitution said they had: Mr. Doug las said they had not. We said the people had ratified it; Mr. Douglas said not so—the people were against it.— .Who doubts, that knows Mr. Douglas, if the whole action of Kansas had been j regular and legal, and free from fraud, i that he would have voted for her ad j mission, notwithstanding there might j have been slavery tolerated therein ? i e o o o Mr. Douglas is almost the only very prominent Democrat North j that has never faultered. Yours, truly, A. 11. Wrioht. Dr. C. P. Culver. —— • *♦» An Irlithmnii In Court. During a session of the circuit court at Lynchburg, an Irishman was indicted for stabbing another on the canal, and the only witness was Dennis O'Brien, i who was required to enter into bonds for his appearance at the next court. — ; The recognisance was read in the usual 1 form : “ You acknowledge yourself indebt ed to the commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of five hundred dollars.” Dennis—“ldon't owe her a cint. sir.” As soon as the clerk recovered from the amusement at the answer he ex plained the meaning of the form, and read it over again. Dennis—“ 1 tell yo I dont. owe her a cint. Its more money nor I over saw, nor my father before nie." At this stage of the matter a brother of Dennis interfered, and said: “ Ye must jest say it, Dennis ; it's one of the forms of the law.” Dennis—“ But I won’t; I’m a dc-j cent, honest man, what pays my debts, j and I'll speak the truth, and the divil! may drink all my whisky for a month if! I say I owe anybody a cint, Now cheat: me if you can.” _•<*. . A gentleman, of Rochester, N. Y., who had a six day’s ticket over the Cen tral Railroad, which had run beyond the time designated, was ejected irom the cars by a conductor, and compelled ! to pay li is fare.
