We understand that up to Sunday night the river had risen about three feet, but it has since fallen about one foot. Several steamers are laying at our wharves loading and unloading. At present the river is in good navigable order, but unless there have been heavy ! rains above, it will not long remain so. j —_—._ New Advertisements. A. D. The Board of Health will meet weekly here-' after, and we will publish the reports as soon as received. The city never was in a cleanlier condition than at the present time, and the atmosphere is very pure. Accident. We learn that on Saturday last, a small negro lad, belonging to Rev. Iver son L. Brooks, near Hamburg, S. C., was caught in the cog wheels,of a Cotton Gin, and crushed to death. [communicated,] Mn. Editor Allow me to call your attention to an editorial which appear ed in your columns on the evening of Friday last. You tiien stated that‘“ an affray occured at Train’s barroom near tlieG. R. R. Depot, on Wednesday night last, in which a Mr. Edward Girvin, dangerously stabbed a Mr. Cline in three places with his sword cane," also that the difficulty is “supposed to have been the result of at. old grudge enter tained by Girvin against Clinii. Now if you will allow me to make a| correction, I will state the facts as they occurred. A difficuley first occurred bo tween Girvin and a young man named John Harden. Harden then procured the services of Cline to attack Girvin, they followed him to the place where the difficulty occurred, where it is sup posed, Cline had been stabbed by Gir vin. One Who Knows. The Norfolk Day Book tells a good joke about a party of four fast young men in that city, who hauided a ba ker’s wagon, one night last week, a mile or two into the country, just for mischief. After being fagged out, they determined to end their devilment by upsetting the wagon in a pond. Imagine their astonishment, however, when just as they were about to upturn it, an un known voice from the inside said, “Hold on gentlemen. Suppose you take this wagon back to the city again”—and. when still further, officer Nelson, of the police, jumped out, and collared the ringleader. After a short parley the officer again got in, the bloods hitch ed themselves up, hauled him hack to town, each paid a fine and costs, and re solved that hereafter they will be a lit tie. more careful in planning their tricks, tbat no police officer overhears them. Wax Poisons.—Few persons, especial ly. perhaps, of the very young ladies who practice the very pleasant art of modelling fruits, flowers, &c , in wax. at all suspect the danger in which they are placed fronr the poisonous nature of the coloring matter of the wax which they handle so unsuspectingly. The white wax, for instance, contains white lead: the green, copper; the yellow, chrome yellow; the orange, chrome yellow and Vermillion—strong poisons all—while many other kinds of wax ; are equally poisonous, and, therefore, . dangerous. Several eases are known in Mthich young ladies have been attacked with partial paralysis of the hands and arms, after having devoted some time to the practice of modelling Sad Rumor.—The Paterson (N. J.) Democrat says a report was current 1 about New York yesterday that a promi nent witness in the case of Donnelly, who was hung for the murder of Moses, , the bar keeper of the Ocean House, died on Friday night last, confessing | himseif to have been the murderer of Moses, and declaring that Donnelly was j 1 innocent of any complicity in the crime. ! This rumor needs confirmation Gardening for Ladies.—Make up ! 1 • your beds early in the morning ; sew i buttons on your husband’s shirt; do not rake up any greivances ; protect the young and tender branches of your > family ; plant a smile of good temper in your face, and carefully root out all , angry feelings, and expect a good crop j of happiness. I Died in France.—Mr. Jeremiah Win-1 slow, one of the principal ship owners of Havre, lias just died in that city, j aged 79. He was an American by birth j . but established himself in Havre in j ( 1814, and became a naturalized French man. He accupied himself partly with \ ' ’ the whate fishery. -! | The receipts at New York from cus toms last week were but $403,000—a 1 figure entirely too low, considering the ! t season of the year and the demands up- j . on the Treasury. The New York Commercial says that “the. Great Wall of China has been 1 thrown down.” The French and the - British did the business. , Prof. Orestes A. Brownson, in his Re-, ( view, comes out against the Dred Scott decision. The Spirit of the Times states that Mr. Charles Mathews performed 245 nights during his recent visit to this country, and that his average receipts were - *l2O per night—making a sum of $29,- f 000 ! , Heavy Majorities.—ln the first Con gressional district of Arkansas the vote for Hindman, dem., at the late election, 1 was 18,256 ; for his competitor Crosby, 2,853; Hindman’s majority, 15,402. — < In the 2d Congressional district, Rust, 1 dem., received 10,302 votes ; Jones 3,- 1 104 ; Drew. 3,452 . majority for Rust ■ over both his competitors. 9.746. Shipwreck.—The loss of the ship Ab by Langdon and the bark Mayflower are reported. The Mayflower was hound l j from New Orleans for Natz. and capsiz ’ ed at sea on the 3rd inst. Fourteen per sons were lost, hut Captain Piatt, thej master, and seven others were rescued * —how, is not stated. * Prof. A. M. Wheat continues to come in freely, finding a ready mahtc* at from 80 to cents bushel. —Y . • ■ - 1 "■ COLOMHUB, SOj/vember 4.— Cotton —The re ; ceipts of Cotton yesterday were 240 bales, nearly all which was read Iy sold at 11%/2)11 *«.
