LOCAL. MATTERS.
Nevr Advertisements.
Kinchlby & Sanchez—We would
call attention to the advertisements of
this firm. They are in the Commission
line, and the Agents for the “Star”
Flour Mill at Bell Air. Both partner i
are good business men, and any con
signments made to the house from Ten
nessee or upper Georgia, will meet with
prompt attention, and satisfactory re
turns
Hotel fob Saxe.—We would call at
tention to the sale of the Hotel at Gran
iteville, to take place at Edgefield Court
House on Monday, 4th pros. To an en
terprising man this will no doubt prove
a;good investment.
King's Shingle Machine.— We would
again call attention to this new and im
proved Shingle Machine, which has
been in opeiation in our city for some
months past at the workship of Mr. AV.
H. Goodrich.
The certificates appended to the ad
vertisement are mostly from practical
mechanics, whose reputations are well
known in this city, and throughout a
large portion of the State. "With such
recommendations, there can be but lit
tle doubt, that it is one of the best shin
gle cutters ever invented.
-Oil! What a Groan AVas That?”
Two countrymen, who bore the aspect
es having been born and reared in the
piney woods, entered, on yesterday eve
ning, one of our city churches. They
went up into the gallery and took a seat
in,tlie immediate vicinity of the organ.
'The organist commenced using his
skill on it, causing it to breathe out its
sweet melodious sounds. Our friends,
in rapt amazement, sat. Their eye
balls strained to their utmost tension,
. seemed as if tlieo would start in horror
from their sockets, whilst every hair on
their heads assumed an independent
and perpendicular position. The or
ganist happening to strike a deep bass
note, our friends, with fear depicted on
their blanched countenances, in haste,
made a bee-line for the door. As they
arrived at the door, one of them said
to the other -"Good Lord, Sam, what a
groan that was !”
Camp Ground Burned. —A destructive
fire occurred on Monday evening about
8 o’clock at Mt. A T ernon Camp Ground,
four miles west of this city. The alarm
was given at the very moment when
the s icrament was about to be adminis
tered. The fire originated from a can
dle falling on the floor of one of the
tents which was covered with straw, and
spread with such fearful rapidity that
in a few moments an entire row consist
ing of some 8 or 10 tents were wrapped
in inextinguishable flames. Thoso who
were present on the occasion describe
the scene as terrific in the extreme. —
The table spread with the emblematical
bread and wine, and surrounded with a
host of worshipers was left vacant so
soon as the devouring element made its
appearance, while mothers, with wild
cries for their slumbering offspring,
rushed to and fro, filled with the utmost
consternation. The whole encarap
pj.'.it was ! ri complete confusion until
the~ravagmg~&:2!«s completed their
work. Fortunately no one was injured
either in person or property to any ' n
sidcrahle extent.— Dalton Times, of i ke
A Bequest.— lt is stated that by the
recent death of Mrs. Mary Coggswcll
Jarvis, widow of the late Leonard Jar
vis, of Baltimore, a legacy amounting
to about $20,000 becomes available to
Harvard University, according to the
will of her husband.
The wife of Joseph Baxter, of Hyan
nis, Mass., after having received from
her too confiding husband a liberal sum
of money, last week left his bed and
board, stating that she should “never
return.” The husband, it is said, in
■ dues to tiie opinion that situ is not
worth the trouble of “looking up.”
Mr. Murdoch, of Meriden, Connecti
cut. not tngiiy nights since, thinking ho
heard burglars about, stepped out of
doors and fired a gnu at a dark-looking
object before him. He found that he
hild killed enu of his neighbor’s cows,

The Captain of the Slater —Capt
Townsend, of the slave brig Putnam,
who has been-brought to the New York
quarantine to be sent to Charleston, is a
resident of Providence, R. 1., where he
lias a family. He is said to be. 33 years
of age ; tali, resolute-looking man, with
light hair, large red whiskers, and is very
intelligent and of excellent address and
manners. Bad luck in his legitimate
voyages, he says, forced him into the
slave trade. He.sc.ys that the slaws on
board of the Putnam will return witli
reluctance to Africe, as their condition
was, and vviil be, much worse there than
in the United States or Cuba. He
brought 470 from Africa, but 160 died
at sea.
A Whale —A whale was captured a
few days ago near North river, in the
hay. Its mouth when open ,
pleasured thirteen feet from the under 1
to the upper part. The tongue was as j
large a common door and as soft to the ;
foot as a feather bed. The animal mea- j
cures forty-three feet nine inches in
length ; tweuty-seven in circumference, j
nine feet through, and the tail tin ten j
feet wide.
A Railroad Across the Atlantic. — j
A writei in the New York Tribune sug- |
gests a railroad from America to hurope
He proposes to cut down the hills and
mountains of Scotlad and New England, j
andtotumblethemintothe sea. The tract i
is to be a mile wide and sixty feet above j
the level of the sea ; the rails are to he
on a new plan, the cars two stories high.
The running time is to be twelve hours, j

Little Accounts.
Little accounts, you're the plague «f oue’s life,
The cause of annoyance, worry ami strife.
With trades people, family, servants and wife,
Are ‘ 4 little accounts 1”
Ye begin at our birth with doctor and nurse,
And tluo’ after years ve make holes in our nurse,
t Ye come in with the cradle, go out v ith the
i ~ hearse,
Oh ! “ little accounts !”
From syntax released, a schoolboy so gay,
I returned to enjoy my brief holiday,
But mixed with my classical progress there lay
My “little accounts I”
/
I And I found that, when launched on the ocean of
1 life,
: In college seclusion, political strife.
And e’e.i when I took to myself a fair wife,
1 There were “ little accounts !”
The nuptial festivities, supper and ball,
. j Plate, jewels and equippage, footman so tall.
And presents to bride, ai d bridesmaid and all,
Brought “little accounts!”
■ Seasons rolled on ;my wife—Heaven bless her—
A leader of ton. and au elegant dresser,
1 Brought me “little accounts !”—I would not dis
tress her,
Dear “ little accounts !”
When Tom got his commission, and Jack went to
sea,
And Peter chopped logic at Oxford, d’ye see.
Whether red. blue, or black, their jackets to me
Brought “ little accounts !”
Their fortunes to favor, their views to advance, !
The girls were presented, at Almack’sdid dance. |
: Mamma said ’twas justice to give them a chance,
Great “ little accounts !”
, At Christmas, the time of thanksgiving and joy.
1 Which in mirth and fest’vity all should employ.
Alack ! all my pleasure sustained an alloy
In my “little accounts.”

Augusta, September 8,1858. i
Mr. S. M. King—ln compliant e with your re <
quest, I take pleasure in reporting my experience
in the use of one of your Shingle Machines. My
; machine is located about seventeen miles below
j Augusta, near the Augusta and Savannah Kail
Road ; the material used is cypress ; power, a i
small portable engine, on wheels, which can be
conveniently moved from place to place by a ■
pair of mules or horses The machine works
' admirably, fully up to all you claimed for it, and
■ far beyond my expectation. This machine is op
j orated by one white man, (having no experience
! in the use of machinery) and common plnnta
! tion negroes, it turns out from 7,000 to 12,000 ;
j Shingles per day (of ten working hours) depend
j ing entirely upon the supplying of wood to the
, machine. Your ob’t serv’t,
I, HOPKINS.
Augusta. September 8, 1858.
' Mr. S. M. King —Dear Sir : Your Patent Shin
gle Machine has been in operation at my shop
j for two months, and I have watched it closely.
To make Shingles, it far surpasses any machine
! 1 have seen It does its work well, and can, in
my opinion, be made to turn out from ten to flf
i teen thousand per day. Its simplicity and its
• durability I do nut think can be excelled.
