The following gentlemen have been appointed to collect subscriptions to aid the efforts of the Howard Association of Charleston, in ministering to the wants of the sick and destitute under the in flictions of the pestilence which pre vails in that city. Committee of City Council— Dr. Wm. H. j Tutt, John D. Smith, Dr. Wm. E. Dear- , ino, and Wm. V. Keener. Committee of Young Men's Christian isso- i elation- -Messrs. Bones, Beall, Milledoe, and Derrr. The Committees have entered on their duties, and we hope our citizens vtill contribute liberally to so worthy an ob ject, and that when the committee get through their labors, they will find they have sufficient means not only to) aid the Howard Association of Charles ton, hut some to spare to our sister city, Savannah, to whom at present we have no doubt a little pecuniary assistance would be very acceptable. - A !Ulsliap. We unfortunately had our inside form a little pied this morning, which will ac count for the absence of a few adver tisements in this evening’s issue. The dish, as presented to us, was not a very inviting one—but we have commenced devowering it greedily, and hope to have all right by Monday. This is a go ahead age, and we are determined to keep up with it, and when a misfortune | like the above overtakes us, we will look it in the face until we conquer. We copy the following paragraph from the Cartersvilie Express of the Ist inst. We thank the editor for the con • Science he has in the chaiacter of the Dispatch. find hope that himself nor any ofj its readerswill ever have cause to think otherwise. It would appear that some "f our country papers are extremely anxious to take up every flying report, that the yellow fever has made its appearance in Augusta. We cannot understand why this is so, unless they have run short of material to write about We receive the Evening Dispatch daily from Augusta, and we feel assured that the character of that paper is such, that it would (iis dian to conceal a thing of this kind.— We are confident that there is not a case of the fever in Augusta, and we have the most supreme contempt for any man or set of men, who attempt in this manner to injure the business of one of our best markets. Our Augusta exchanges are reaching us very irregularly. The Chronicle comes one morning and the Constitutionalist the next. The Dispatch is true to its name, and never fails. — Sav. Republican. We will endeavor to keep up to time, friend Simms, and if the Dispatch ever fails, there must be an accident on the Railroad oi atthe office. The Savannah papers now reach us very regularly. ! PROCKEDINIiS OF COUNCIL. Regular Meeting, 1 October 1, 1858. j ' Mr. Hall offered the following reso lution, which passed : Resolved, 'I hat His Honor tiie Mavor, appoint a committee of one from each ward to co operate with the committee from the Young Men’s Christian Associ ation, to solicit contributions in behalf of our suffering fellow citizens of j Charleston. In accordance with the above resolu tion, His Honor the Mayor appointed Messrs. Dearing, Tutt, Smith and Keener that committee. S. H. Crump, Clerk Council. For the Dispatch. My Electioneering Frolic. [concluded.] : I offered her my arm and we were jsoon among the dancers. I prided myself on my dancing, having taken j one quarter's lessrn from a traveling j artist, but I soon found that fancy steps land puncheon floors did not agree, for | the floor was composed of split logs, j roughly hewn ; so I adopted the style |of the others. I was also pretty good jat this, having been taught by the ne groes when a hoy. Every now and then some of the by standers would | sing out, "Go it Snellings, you area trump,” or “hit him agin hoss fly, them’s thelicks.” “Lord sakes,” exclaimed an old wo man, Bitting in the chimney corner with a black stump of a pipe between her gums,"ef he don't dance jist iikeSeatb j Simpkins use to do in South Carliny, when I was a gal.” The dancing now became fast and fu rious, the fiddler with his head thrown back, mouth open, sleeves rolled up and eyes set in his head, was laboring lawfully. Gradually the couples ex hausted, commenced dropping off, one J and two pair at a time, and in the course |of half an hour, I looked around and found no one on the floor but Big Siss ' and myself. I now thought it was time j to stop, but no signs of weariness could I perceive in Big Siss, with jaws set firm, head thrown a little on one side, and holding her dress with both hands, she ballancaed right and left, and every now | and then she would come down to it, with a regular hack step and double shuffle that would have broken the heart of any of our city belles. I saw at once it was to he a t ot wln( j tween us ; if L out the longest I a be safe, but if, unfortunately, Big [Siss prove the victor, farewell my hopes of success in the coming election. The whole company now crowded j around, big and little, old and you-g, i | negroes and dirty faced Children, all J j joined in shouts of encouragement.— j Now it was “£o it, Big Siss, jist take the shi.:,e out of him or, "oh, my Spellings, come down to it, rute hog or die.” Every now and then I would strike my toes against the uneaveu floor, hut gathering myself up, would cut some extra figure, as if it was intentional, calling down yells of applause. But this could not last long, it is the pace | that kills; already was the perspiration I streaming from every pore; my head was becoming dizzy with over exertion. 1 looked at Big Kiss, merciful Heavens! not a muscle changed, the same firm step and unchanging eye ; the never ending hack step and double, shuffle—it drove me almost mad. In my mental agony, I could not help thinking, d—m | you, Big Siss. | Dispair had leased hold of my heart; I became oblivious to every thing around me, and danced away like a mad man. ! Suddenly a yell broke upon my con tused senses—the cry of “well done Snellings, old fellow, you have tuck the i floor.” I looked before me, Big Siss was not i there, I iooktd around and she was • (seated in acorner fanning herself with - ; the sifter. Never shall I forget the joy [ of that moment; my feelings were too i deep for utterance. Silently taking my seat, amid numerous slaps on theshoul , der, punches in the side, and cries of : | “ Snellings is the boy,” I inwardly vow ed that while reason held her sway, never, no never, to dance again at a country frolic. We will pass over the remainder of the night, the supper with its attendant delicacies of long colkmls, fat bacon, ’ corn dodgers and the numerous fights be fore day, when the red eye whisky had I began to do Us work. With all the accompanying pleasures of a back woods frolic, I must simply say, , in conclusion, that on the day of elec i tion, I received the votes of every man who was at the party—beating my op j ponerit by a fair majority—old Sol saying.: “Any man that could out dance Big Siss, was the man for the county, certain.” Paul. , . ’ Wilkes Superior Court.—The Fall Term of this court commenced in this ' place on Monday last, Judge Thomas presiding, and terminated on last night. Nothing of note or interest transpired. Some of the most importrnt cases were ; necessarily laid over until the next i term, owing to the absence of T. R. R. : Cobb, Esq , who is engaged as counsel in most of them.— Wilkes Republican, Ist A Large Increase.— The receipts of cotton at Galveston, Texas, for the year just closed exhibit an increase of 48 428 bales; the amount for 1857 having been only /1.399 bales; while for the year just closed, it has been 119,820.
