We have been under frequent obliga tions to our police for information con cerning arrests, &c., for which we ten der anew our obligations. But they have a practice—regarded by them the best policy—of concealing robberies and other crimes from the press while they are on pursuit of the perpetrators. It is a mistaken idea that rascals will be 'a whit more careless of concealment because they are not published, and that the press can do much to put the public on the lookout, there is no ques tion. In our large cities the stolen goods are described in the papers that they may be recognized if offered for sale, and the whole details are given promptly to the papers when any crime demanding investigation is committed. But with us, the thief has time to get to the ends of the eartli before intelligence is lodged anywhere save at the police office. AVatev Works. A. W. Craven, Esq., Enginer of the ■Croton Water Works in New York, we understand is now in our city, with a view of prospecting for water. We wish him every success, as what our citizens most need is a bountiful supply of water, which we have all around us. — Business. Cotton is coming in freely, and this morning Broad and Mclntosh streets presented quite a business appearance, as there wore a number of wagons in from the surrounding counties. The receipts by railroads arc daily increas ing. Health of Savannah. The Savannah Board of Health report Six interments during the 24 hours end ing on the sth inst., at 7, 13.I 3 . M.—two by yellow fever. The interments for the week sum up 44, 14 by yellow fe ver. Savannah municipal Election. The Democrats have nominated Thos. M. Turner, Esq., for Mayor, and the Reform Party have nominated Hiraji Roberts, Esq. The steamer Alabama, from Sa vannah, arrived at Quarantine, New York, on Tuesday morning—all well. As most of it was received too late to be handed over to the ware houses yesterday evening, it was not all counted in the receipts of yesterday, . but the bulk will go to swell to-day’s receipts. As arrivals by wagon are also lively to-day,we anticipate a large day s business. —Columbus Enquirer, bth. Gin House Burnt. —The gin house of Mr. Isaiah Dubose, says the Demopolis Gazette , in the neighborhood of Macon, i in thecanebrake, was entirely consumed by fire on last Friday evening, together 1 with thirty-three bales of cotton, all his corn cribs and contents. It is not known, certainly, how the fire origina ted, but it is supposed to have been pro duced by friction of the gin. The fire \ was distinctly seen from town, though Mr. Dubose’s place is nine miles distant, 1 Hawks,—We have several times heard the remark that hawks were more nu- ; merous in this section than usual this season. Do they migrate ? and in flocks? l The Fredericksburg (Ya.) Herald reports \ that a farmer of Spottsylvania county j had his attention arrested the other day by a very large flock of hawks moving i Southward ; he estimated their number * at two hundred ! An old gentleman of ! the same county remarked, that about • 25 years ago, be observed a similar emi grating flock of hawks, and supposed they were moving on account of the , scarcity of food. —Columbus Enquirer , 2 d ; instant , Mas. Hayne’s Farewell. —The Bos ton Journal says : “ On Friday evening next, Mrs. Julia Dean Hayne will bid farewell to her nit merous friends in Boston. After per forming in the West and South she will proceed to England, where, we are in formed, she will appear early in the spring. A man named Alexander Gilbert, put an end to his existence in Blair county, Pa., on Sunday night, by cutting his throat first with a dull knife ; then tried to tear the breach wider by inserting his fingers, and finally ended the job by sawing, into the jugular with a piece of glass. The first section of the overland stage route to California—some GOO miles— has been traversed in more than one day less time than called for by the schedule. If the gain holds through at the same rate, San Francisco will be , reached overland in twenty-two days' time. George Parish, a well known million aire of Ogdensbnrg, lately had an im mense estate left him in Bohemia. He had more than enough before, yet his previous wealth was but little compared • with that lately bequeathed him. The purchaser of the Charter Oak . place at Hartford, Conn., has taken measures to prevent the knowledge of , the site of the Charter Oak from being lost, by placing a stone slab in the earth on the spot. Heavy frosts have occurred in New Haven and the invicity for several nights past, and plants and vines have 1 suifered in consequence very severely. ; The Leavenworth City Herald says that the newly discovered gold region is about as large as the State of Missouri, I and there is gold through the whole of ! it. The city authorities of Newburyport, Massachusetts, last week seized nearly GOO gallons of liquor, belonging to Perley & Pillsburg of that place.
