retelling Dispute};. » O’CLOCK P.M, OCT.U, 1858. Notice to Advertleers. Advertisements for the Evening Dispatch must he handed in by eleven o’clock in the forenoon, iD order to appear the same day. LOCAL MATTERS. Health of Augusta. | The city is still blessed with a remark- < able exemption from mortality. The ; C interments for the week ending to-day i I ai 'o three—two of which died out of { town. The only death in the city was < an old negro, of consumption. i • *•••- I A Genteel Swindler. i Our quiet city has lately been the the- , atre of a series of somewhat novel , and certainly quite singular financial i operations; comparing, in a small way, ' with the magnificent swindles of the , cities. A man named Makchy , made liis appearance here last spring as , a teacher of the French, Italian and Latin languages, and succeeded in forc- I , ln S himself upon the acquaintance of many of our best citizens. Os some he borrowed, and to others he loaned money, and often had considerable sums at his credit in hank, and seemed quite willing to he observed as a man that handled a liberal amount of the “root 4 of evil." He was a regular attendant I at the drawings of Swan & Co's Lotte ries, and pretended to he a confidential agent for a “large company" of our first citizens—who would not buy tickets themselves, hut confided their money to him. He has been seen with large bundles of tickets, and talked freely about having drawn prizes, it Two weeks ago ho advertised that lie * would he connected for the fall term ■ with several of our schools, as Teacher f of French, &c., and also form classes at , i *”. s I ' ooms - Soon "Her, lie told his \ riends that his physician advised him to take his family to Stone Mountain a i few days for their health, and he solic ited several persons to go to the Livery Stable and use his horse during his nb- I *ence. A number, to whom a ride of ' an afternoon is a luxury, not to be treat ed with contempt, went to the stable —and were surprised to learn that lie had left special orders not to let any ’ hud ' J ,IRP !,i * horse and buggy until lie • returned! Days passed, and the little r French gentleman was not heard from, j The schools opened, and he still did not return. T his excited remark, and du ring tlie last week a number of disclo -1 snres have to come to light, indicating # that P,of Marchi is an imposter—one ' grand humbug. Parties in the city as- , sert that they saw in his possession notes payable to the order of three or four wealthy citizens and eudorsed by them, amounting to several thousand ' dollars— and which these parties, so far as we have learned—pronounce forge- 1 ries. We have not learned whether he ne gotiated any of the notes, but he left a number of bills unpaid, including a small account with this office.— 1 An attachment was issued on his horse and buggy, and others would have fol- , lowed suit, hut the parties of whom lie “smelled a rat," and as lie Ik I '•lid tie money, I |p® m f"r tic balance. • it t tli.it Mi an Italian, and doc.-; not , " •" b i Ulgtmge can i: 1 1\. If ' Jl ' '-nac- lie . "it, ,1 simpleton, which renders him entirely unworthy of confidence, and we would put the public on the watcli for him. He had some bona fide notes on our citizens, for cash loaned, whicli we learn that he used—hut his “fancy paper" has not yet turned up.— He lias a wife and an interesting daugh ter. He is short, compactly built, with very black eyes, and hair, and mous tache. He dresses genteelly, and sports a small cane witii an ivory handle in the shape of a horse’s foot. He speaks English very imperfectly. Pass him . ronnd. New Advertisements, Ho! for Nicaragua!— It will beseen by the notice of Col. Htiilku, Jn another column, that a vessel will leave Mobile for San Juan del Norte on the 10th November. Those who wish to emi grate, should make early application to secure a passage. Richards & Son.—lt will be seen that this old and well established Book and Stationery establishment advertises a heavy stock of goods in their line.— They do a heavy business with the in terior of Georgia and Tennessee, and sell at moderate prices. Singer's Sewing Machines.—The of fice and sales room for these popular Machines has been removed to 182 Broad street, next door to A. Fredrick's.— They have a good assortment on hand. Call and examine them. American Hotel, Charleston —We would call the attention of the travel ing public to the card of Mrs. Nf.uffer, who has leased the above well known house on the corner of King and George streets. We are informed she spreads an excellent table, and that every thing is kept nice and tidy about the house. W*. E. Barnes.—This gentleman, it will be seen, has established in this city, what has long been needed, an ex tensive Lumber Yard, where any kind of Pine Lumber can be obtained at low prices. The location of this yard is a convenient one, next to the South Car olina Railroad Depot, and he has our best wishes for success in his new tin- ! dertaking. Fire In Hamburg. About half past seven o’clock this i morning a fire broke out in the two story tenement on Broad street, occu pied by Mr. Damm, Ben Harris and others. It was soon enveloped in fiames. Mr. Damm’s loss is about $3,000 em bracing all he lmd, and it was with great difficulty he made his escape. The corner house occupied by Mr. Lyons was also destroyed—he saved the greater portion of his furniture. A small tene ment house, occupied by Jaques, was also destroyed. No insurance on any ' of the buildings. It is not known how the fire originated. i We regret to learn that a young mau i named residing on the oth- j er side of the river, was run over by one of the engines, and seriously injured.
