(Advertisements Tor the Evkmxg Dispatch must tacdei in by eleven o'clock in the forenoon, in or ler to appear the same day. LOCAL MATTERS. Her! net lon In Exclinnge. We understand that our banks will, on Monday next, reduce the rate for sight checks oil New York to par. ■.».« Frost. We are informed that on Thursday morning last, a slight White Frost was observable in the out-skirts of the city. Some say .there was a frost this morn ing- The Cbarlesion News of yesterday says There was a heavy white frost at Summerville last night. We also learn that there has been a Nlt strong white frost at Mount Holly, nine teen miles from Charleston. There was a “severe white frost” at Fayetteville, N. C., on Saturday and Sunday last. —- ■* ■ Stw Advertisement k. G. T. Dortic.—We hope our old friend will excuse us for one or two Wanders made in his advertisements on Thursday, such as bushels of Champaigne instead of baskets, and new country Rice for new Carolina. It was set up late, in a hurry, and not read over. By the way, our “ Devil ” says we are not so far out of the way, and argues that as it takes two pints to make a quart, &c,, that friend Dop.tic has on hand bushels of champaigne. If he lias, wo know it is good. We are rejoiced to see that notwithstanding the city au thorities have removed him, ho finds himself still in in the old place—long may he there remain, dispensing the choice articles of life. Christopher Ditt-gsii.—We would cali attention to those wishing anything done in turning or upholstery, to the advertisement of this gentleman. A- a Turner, and Upholsterer, he has no superior in the State. 8. Kacvfbr.- -It will be seen that this f’C bouse is just receiving and opening l a new stock of line goods, suitable for the season, at the store, under, the Au j| g .istu Hotel. He has opened a splen did store and keeps on hand a large and well selected stock of Staple and Fancy _ Dry Goods. To judge by appearances as we pass along, we would say he finds Stlie Ladies good customers. Night Suiooi..- The young men of o.ir city, ami more particularly th-j me chanical portion, enjoy now evffjry op portunity of improving th'-mselves, either In Knglish or Classical studies. We have now open several night schools, among the number it will he seen that .1. 0. Lowry, A. M. proposes to open a school on Ok evening of the 18th mst. in which lie will give instruc tions, in the higher branches, including Mathematics and Hook Keeping. His terms are moderate and we would ad vise our young men to avail‘themselves of the opportunity offered—in after years they will find it money well and profitably spent. RosiCiirrAfiK NT nsiiO'. This cstab lishncent is well kept up hy its present proprietor, and the Wants, Shrubbery, &c, offered by him have generally given satisfaction to purchasers. It will be s«n that he is now receiving a large ad ditioia to his previous stock of Fruit ar.d ornamental Tree", Flowering shrubs ltjsos, well rooted, Boxwood, &c., to ■». hich he invites attention. Hudson & Mills,-?. We would call attention of citizens, merchants and others to the advertisement of this firm. They have on hand at their new .store a largo and well selected stock of articles in the grocery line, and although new beginners, are we'l known to most of those who dual this city as young men of industry and integrity- two qualifications that should give couii dennee to those who patronize their house that their orders will iie prompt ly and faithfully attended to. , Cabinet Making.—We intended to have notioed sooner, the removal of Mr. Sinoleton to the “St. Charles building” on Ellis street. Ho is well prepared to, execute orders in Cabinet making, and will continue ,to pay particular afcten-! tion to repairing .and packing furniture 1 and upholstery. Lambaok & Coo'jer.—This firm has now on hand, and arc daily expecting additions to their large and fine stock of choice Segars. We recommend their Georgia’s and Augiusta’s—we have given both a trial, and they will bear puffing. It is a luxury we seldom enjoy, to get hald of a good segar, and a good news paper, and have the Jeisnre to read the one while we puff the other. •John Radpoid.—We would call atten tion to his advertisement. He keeps a good Family Grocery on the corner of Broad and Centre streets, and sells cheap. He has on hand some fine old Dutch, Swiss and Green Cheese - the latter is difficult to be obtained W. 0. I’n ice. —This old mid well known house still transacts a heavy bu siness in the Ready-made Clothing line, and as Merchant Tailor. He has now on hand a heavy fall stock, which he is selling at low prices. Tliobc in want of . new and fashionable clothing, either ready made, or cnade up to order, wili ' not be disappointed by giving him a < call. Montgomery Guard;, This Company paraded yesterday as- j ternoon, and made n fine appearance in ! onr streets. For a new corps, they are well drilled, and went through several! difficult manrtmvers very creditably. I 1 apt. Daley and his officers deserve credit for the proficiency in drill which ) the company has attained, in so short a time; before the winter drilling is over, with the same care and attention al ready bestowed, the Guards will be able to vie with some of our oldest and best drilled companies. It was very dusty, as tlic-y passed the office, but when they reached the Au gusta Hotel, the popular landlord, W'heelock, ordered a halt, which was cheerfully obeyed, anti the company marched into the back room, and par took of lee Water— (in a horn) to wash tiie cobwebs down. Proceedings Board of Health. Reullar Meeting, i October 14, 1858. (’ Present—James M. Dye, Chairman. Members—Messrs. Peay, Plumb, Har per, Fleming, Miller. The City Sexton reports three inter ments from the 7th to the 14th of Oc tober, two of whom died out of the city. Diseases of which they Died.—Consump tion, 1; Diseases of the Liver, 1 ; Chol era Infantum, 1. Total 3. Sam. H. Crump, Secretary Hoard of Health. The Columbia Mirror learns from J. 11. Devereaux, resident engineer of the Tennessee and Alabama Railroad, that the track of. that road has now been i laid one mile into the county of Maury. The Mirror indulges the hope that the iron horse will pay a visit to Columbia 1 by the first of January next. Expected Rrsz in Leather. - The New York Post says: -‘Two pairs of shoes were lately made by a shoe nianu- ! facturer in Lynn, to fill an order for a ! Southern plantation. Thy are intended 1 for a slave, who is also a negro 'driver or overseer, and measures nineteen inches ; and ahalf in length, with a corresponding width. We presume these shoes wore, made at so much the foot. Mail Robbery. —Through the kind- 1 net-3 of our Postmaster, Solomon Cohen, i Esq., we have been placed In possession ; of tlio news of the cxvinroission of a man robbery on the Western & Atlantic Railroad The, Postmaster at Chatta nooga advis.oß him that the packages of letters from Savannah to Nashville and Cimttii;,iooga. of the 18th August last, were stolon from the cars on the State h'oad and found in the Tennessee river <>n the 12th October. There wasauum iier of important letters : one of which contained a check on the Central Rail road Bank for 527 or 429 (too much de faced to tell exactly) ill favor of Stric ken, Ellis Si Co. This is an important discovery to our merchants, as it may explain the cause of unanswered letters and unacknowled remittances.—tfawm mh Repucliean. Kth insl. - Frost near Savannah.- The weather which had been rather warm for some days, suddenly took a change Thursday night, and yesterday opened cool enough for a month later in the season, and with a stiff’ breeze from the north. We are informed by a friend, who came across the river early yesterday morn ing, that Screven’s Causeway, through the Savannah bottom, opposite the city, was white with frost as lie passed over it about sunrise.- Republican. Opening the Coosa—We loam that . Col. Pennington, with the necessary force, and with all the materials requi site for such an undertaking, started on Wednesday down the liver in a large 1 boat, prepared fer the occasion, to sur vey the Coosa, with reference to deter mining the practicability, and the cost, and tire appropriate plan, of opening ’ Die liver to navigation.
