[ Spec ~. ■ Correspondence of Chari- on Loan- r j New York, Oct. 19, 1858. The, rumor, as I intimated yesterday, that Morrissey* one of the prize tighteis, had received a fearful injury, was a hoax. Tuere have been two reasons suggested for the canard. One is that It was intended as a blind to the po. ict: here, so that they would not come to Buffalo to interfere, thinking there was to be no light in consequence of the in jury received by MonisK-y. Another story is that the friends of Heeimti. alias the ‘ Benicia Boy.” fearing that the number.! of Morrissey s friends would far exceed his own, took this method of k. :ping them away ; the friends o! the “Benicia Boy” being alreadv on the ground, or else notified of the tiue state of the case. Say what we will, this prize tight is tho great topic of the day The rail road cars and the steamboats were lasi evening burdened with the .number* going to Buffalo to see tho ‘•mill All were not rowdies or blacklegs, by au\ means. Politicians, men of means and honorable pursuits baye swelled the crowds which rush to sec two men fight each other. And although the leading newspapers of the city cry shame upon the whole thing, several of them have deputed reporters, who will be on the ground to describe the event, and thus give a publicity which it would not otherwise have to this disgrace to civilization. A stranger dropping among us to day would think that our chief business and choicest delight was prize fighting In respectable circles, among men oi busi neos, the main topic of conversation is —who will beat —Morrissey or the Be necia Boy ?” The fight that took place yesterdi.y between Barney Aaron and Scotty of Brooklyn, is but fuel to the flame of pugilism already at fever heat. The Brooklyn man won yesterday' he cause his opponent, Aaron, struck a foul blow. So gieat is the excitement, attending the light for the Champion ship, that if either Morrissey or Hee nan act unfairly, there will be a terri ble row. It wwuld not surprise many, that if instead of these two bruisers , pounding each other, there were to en sue a general knock down fight and ter- Tible slaughter. Pink. Yellow Fever. For the thirty hours ending at noon on Monday last, the number of deaths reported by the Board of Health of New Orleans, were sixty-one. The deaths for the week ending Sunday, were 310. Nino infei merits from yellow fever were reported by the Board of Health of Mobile for the 24 hours ending at 6 o'clock on Monday evening last. Singular Shooting Accident. —A Mr. Eastman, of Kdenville, N. Y., was shot ; j under the* following circumstances rn!< Friday. 15th inst.: Ho was thrown i from a wagon, and a double-barreled j gun, which was in the wagon, was also! accidentally thrown out, when upon. • striking the ground, both barrels were] discharged, the contents entering the . side and thigh of Mr. Eastman, inflict ing such a terrible wound that death ensued shortly afterwards. Never having witnessed anything to proselyte us to the doctrine of Spiritti ' iilism, we arc not prepared to vouch for : the truthfulness of tho experience as re lated by a colored gentleman, whom we chanced to overbear, but will give the . experience for what it is worth. Out readers may believe what Samuel says or not, just as they please. Should we ever witness so plain a manifestation as . i Samuel says, ho did, wc shall have all i our skepticism removed. We give the story of Samuel as near ly as wo can, in the language he used ; in relating it to his friend Joshua, which ■ was verbatim as follows : ‘ 1 Wei 1 Sam, ’' says Josh un, 1 * what 1 does you link ol> dis ting dev call spir itziem and de mejums, festfttions, and ! all eicli as dat; does you tiuk dar is troof in it, or not t” ‘ 1 Wh y. At this point, wc could hold in no longer, and our laughing broke up the conversation between the two darkies Singular Surgical Operation. A man named Berry, residing at Peters burg, Va . was suffering intense pain, last week, from a felon on his hand.— Oil the 7th inst , he seated himself by the track of the Petersburg road ; and when the train approached, cooly laid his hand on the rail, the cars pass ing over and seveiing it from the wrist. The consequence is, that he will have to undergo a second amputation, at the hands of a surgeon. Wild Country.—Butler county, Mis souri seems to be a wild region. Bears, wolves and other animals fwac naturae, are frequently seen and great numbers killed. Last winter, a single hunter killed upwards of 20 “bare” and some tbO smaller wild “critters.” Elk are sometimes found there. UFFIt’IAI. ORA WINGS OF THE Sparta Academy Lottery.
