"local matters. Sons of Temptrr.ncr. The Grand Division, Sons of Temper ance, will hold a session at the Masonic Hail, at half rast seven o'clock to night. Members of Augusta Division | at. l their families are invited to be present. Removal of flic Rcil-iyc Club. This club, officers and members, at the request of Recorder Gheen on yes terday, removed to their tvintery quav-j ters, at the palatial mansion near the Parade Ground, where tin- proper au thorities will not be £?«•-’.. in their atten- , tion to them. They were politely es- . carte l to their quarters by several po- , ]t C e officers, and their courage was re- ! vived on the way, hv exclamations like;, these: “On Stanly, ou.” “Never doj to give it up so, Mr. Brown.' ' Jordan, : it is a hard road to travel.” “ 1 lie day ( am going.” They were convicted ot abusing and maltreating the 18th sec t“contrary to tiro law- of the city, | the good order, peace and dignity there-j °* Off far -Mcar.rjjun. Col Rudler, one of the staff of dr.N. Walk Kit in his first expedition in ( en- ; toil America, left our city ou yesterday, | to h.in an emigrating party, which is toj tail from Mobile in a few days, forNiea-j ragua. We learn that tire company will j go out with all tlic facilities lica, -ary for tlic peaceful colonization of that country. We trust that no intermed dling commodores will intercept their progress, ami that they will succeed in I getting up tire standard of civilization I ami good Government in that rude and j misruled country. Go!. Ridlv.r lias promised to keep us posi-.d regularly, with the progress of the expedition. ar. .l as lie is a good writer we -expect j som - interesting narratives from lib: pen. King’s Shingle Machine. Those who wish to see King s patent Si.it.glo Machine at work, which is ere-1 ating such an excitement, backed lrythe] best mechanical talent, for its simplicity, strength and durability, performing its work with ease, facility and regularity, can have an opportunity of doing so at the Montgomery Fair. This machine no- Is no puffing—it will speak for itself at Montgomery as it did at Atlanta, drawing crowds around it, and giving complete satisfaction in making perfect shingles. Wo witnessed its operation in Atlanta, where it was pronounced the “ perfection of sbingle luaking,” and we have no doubt it will i) ; . jt with a like reception at Montgom ety. —. Weather. Pu;ing the last two days wo have bad a refreshing rain, the first for many weed:- The weather to-day is cold cloudy and disagreeable. Return of Absentees. Our city is fast assuming its winter aspect of business activity and social gaiety. Sand Hillians are moving in, am! every day adds to the number of returned absentees. Houses on which the-dust of summer had thrown its man tle. have passed through the renovating influences of diluted white-lead or lime stone —front blinds are thrownopen, and familiar faces are seen moving along the corridors or hunting for the last rose of summer among tire fading verdure of the flower gardens. Happy reunions of j friends severed by summer-absense lie- j guile the long hours of evening, and—j when the rain is over—our broad shady | avenues will teem with shop-going i groupes whoso faces glow with the; health-giving influence of country air I or summer rustication. Our churches I too, wear a more thronged, if not a more devotional aspect, and present an interesting epitome of popular taste, and a truthful reflex, of the fall fash ions. We have alluded often, and with: pride, to the deserved prominence of! Augusta as a business emporium. In | the skill of her artezans—the enterprise, j sagacity and stability of her merchants, I our devoted city occupies an enviable j position. The charms of high intel lectual and physical endowment, hap- i pily blended with the elegancies of lib eral cultivation, impart solid and en- i during interest to our social attractions, i, If the glare of the tricks and trumpe- j ry of fashion is sometimes observable, and flaunting furbelows here and j there detract from the real charms of a , pretty face—very few cities can boast of; move beautiful ladies, or a higher stan dard of female elegance. Possessing so many facilities for the pursuit of business and the enjoyment of life, Augusta has still one great bar rier to its rapid growth, in this prevail ing custom—grown into a fancied no-; cessity—of summer absence. Much loss is sustained in the neglect - of business and the expense incurred in \. keeping up a summer residence. The , business of the city loses a very desira j ble source of revenue in the annual de-: pletion of trade incident to the removal | of a large portion of our population ; : and much sickness is induced by a , change of climate or exposure from, home. It is the belief of the writer based on the mortuary tables, and the j experience of several summer-tours in l this State and others, that there is not , in the whole Union a city mote healthy < than Augusta. It is true, our children j 1 1 are liable to summer diseases. So they \ ore everywhere when caged up in tie | shade, dressed uncomfortably, and fed like pig; -ns too: .any undoubtedly ere, in these days of French milliners, cuii < feet tenon and indolent mothers. If! we had a plentiful supply of water, the! city would be infinitely more comforta - ble than the thronged summer resorts, i where visitors luxuriate in log huts 1 , contracted roams, and eat tough beef and leaden biscuits, at two dollars a! day. Our ciLj if acknowledged to be one' of the most beautiful in the Union. If! we could but lay the dust, few, save the j i wealthy, and such fancy sprigs as we j ; could spare, would desert her in sum-, mer, and it is believed that it would be | a favorite resort for Northern tourist ! and invalids. The revenue that would result is worth securing. Public School meeting* We would call the attention of our readers to the report of the proceedings of the public School Meeting held in Atlanta last wceK- Prompt action is desirable, and we would suggest that a ! meeting he held in this city at an early day,to consider the resolutions, in order that our delegation may be prepared to : act with their constituents in a matter of so much importance to our whole people. ™TUIToI aA N STK A M EitS - Saiiii j Lt*» U and fr<,m the United States.
