'•tin tiiics on Engiisli Grammar.
BY LUCIES LATASTE.
Mr. Editor: —ln this age of Pro
gress and Reform, the Press is the great
La engine, either of Truth or Error. 1,
doubt not your willingness to promul-i
gate the former, and zeal in the exposi-1
tion of the latter. I propose, in the 1
discharge of what I regard public)
dr.iv, to avail myself of a space in your,
columns, with a view of furnishing the
profession of teachers f.yi ■■ria’lt/, and the j
public generally, with some strictures,
upon the prevailing systems of English
Grammar, exposing their numerous |
errors and improprieties, and at the!
same time, to cal I attention to the c >r-)
reetionof those errors as displayed in I
the “ Philosophical Grammar of Prof.
I. J. Morris.”
Had 1 the means of eliciting the
l opinions of intelligent teachers, I sus
| pect a large majority of theta would
concur with me, in saying that they
have been conscious of the many errors
a text liooks in Grammer, yet the best
they could do, was to use the books eon
tairiing, in their judgment the /tic,:-.' I
errors. .They would also acknowledge!
the trouble and difficulty attending!
their labors, in being obliged to con
tame the entiie time of tire class re
citation, in oral corrections of such er ]
rors. Wjth an experience of thirty
I three years in the profession, I claim
the privilege of being classed among
j its Nestors, and I trust, the fruits of
that experience will be acceptable ai}d
I profitable to those who have just enter-
I ed its ranks. I say then, that I can
-1 cot recall a solitary instance of a thor
ough grammarian, made so by the old
system. But on the other hand, I have
abundant testimony to convince the
most skeptical, that good grammarians
1 can he made in twenty days, by the
new system. If I be asked, whence
thiy difference? I would answer, from,
| the extreme simplicity of Prof. Mok- j
* ms’s system. Truth is the basis of it 1
all. It contains nothing inconsistent)
Wr with reason, and commends itself!
throughout, to the comprehension and j
' understanding of the students. The i
teacher loses no time in explaining a)
principle in one lesson, which he feels
will be overturned in the next. He is
at every step of his progress involving
himself in perplexities and embarrass-
I ments, to the manifest disrelish of the
i pupil. For instance, I ask any teacher
to explain satisfactorily to himself, by
the old systems, the philosophy of the
nominative and objective cases, in the
sentences, John struck James, and James is
J s ruck b’j John. His grammer teache-c
that the nominative case is tire subject
of the verb—the agent actor or doer,
and the objective case is the ob
ject of a verb or preposition. Without
entering minutely, for want of room
into an analysts of those sentences, I
call attention to the word James, in the
second sentence. The teacher is bound
by his grammer, to teach his pupils
, that, it is the nominative to the verb,
• s Struck, and his good sense, tells him at
‘he samp time, that Jams is the recip
ient of the action. In other words,
' James is both in the nominative and ob
jective cases.
j The removal of such obstacles as the
foregoing, from the pupils inquiring after
lyt Trt th, forms but a small portion of the
’ improvements in Prof. Moreis’s system.
With your permission, I will from time
1 to time, submit some of them, for the
benefit of those who may be honestly 1
inclined to advocate and sustain the ‘
logical structure of the English L..n- (
guage.
In my next, 3 will discuss Gender., as ,
taught in the old systems. In coTrobo- 1
j ration of what 1 have advanced on the ;
1 simplicity of the new system, allow me j
to append the experience of others. !
Rev. Chau. H. Stillwell, Rome, Ga., j •
says, “Prof. I. J. Morris has visited the!
city of Rome, and taught a class by his 1
system of Grammar. I have a daugh-!
ter in said class, and am satisfied her 1
i progress was more rapid, and the
knowledge attained more thorough
than it could have been, by the use of
1 tire other systems of grammar. I am
; thoroughly convinced that with Prof.
M's plan, he can perform all he promi-
I se«.”
The editor of the Mobile Tribune, who j
; had witnessed the progress of a class
says; “With a moderate degree of ap
plication, pupils with Morris’s Gram
mar, may readily acquire within twenty
d a very competent knowledge of
the whole practical structure of the
English Language.”
Should there be a sufficient number
in your c ity, anxious to test the system
I now advocate, let it be signified th;o'
your paper.
