Hill's Air Light
. Mr W p S.'-.TJI has ca eshilution, at
Out counting room, a new light, of re
cent invention, the result of a new and
[ hilosopbical combination of common
air, with several chemical substances.
‘Jpon four uprights isarranged an iron
vessel, holding from one to three gal
lons of a cheap and quickly prepared
chemical, and a'short distance above
this i? arranged an air bellows of con
siderable power—the two being connect
ed by a main tube. By a weight ar
ranged with double gearing, after the
manner of a marine clock, the bellows is
kept in constant operation. Through
their action, a steady stream of air is
forced down the tubular passage way,
and passed over the chemical deposited
in tire iron vessel or catalyzer. Hence
it is carried into distributing pipes,
which are. precisely the same as are used
for supplying Coal Gas, and rushing
through them to tire discharge tubes, is
lighted and burned in the same maimer.'
’The perfect simplicity of the •atrango
nrent must he patent to ail. In passing
over the chemical, the stream of air is
charged with a certain portion of its
•constituents, and becomes inflammable
—beiug by the process converted into
oxv-hyffrbgen gas. It burns with a soft,
clear, steady flame, exceeding in bril
liancy four times that produced by
Coal Gas. .
do far as wo are able to judge from
its use in onr office, for several days, it is
an agreeable light to read or work by.
We are informed by the exhibitor,
that the cost of the chemical used in
the manufacture of this light is $1 per
gallon, and experiment has proved that
a gallon will furnish a single burner
with material for two hundred and six
ty hours combustion. The machine on’
exhibition is designed for family use,
and will supply gas for one dozen bur
ners. It may be made of any size, for
the use of hotels, factories, or other
purposes.
The same apparatus furnishes, by
means of a pipe passing under the cat
alyzer, a blue flame, sufficient for all
cu inary purposes. Those who have ex
perimented for monthßwith this flame,
report that it costs no more than one
mill per hour f
The following are the characteristics
of the light, as claimed by the paten
tee :
characteristics or the light.
1. It requires little or no skill to
manage it. A child can wind up the
Machine. Servants, of ordinary ca
pacity, can work the arrangement with
perfect success. |
2. The Gas can he conducted, through
pipes, to any part of the largest build ■!
jng, with perfect facility. I
8. It is absolutely free fj-otu all ode r
I in bar ning.
| 4. It is perfectly safe. It has been
! thoroughly tested, in every proportion
of admixture, with common air. and
! simply bums in a quiet manner, always
I.ref using to explode.
5. It works equally well in ail wen
1 i tiier. Whether '.lie thermometer stand?
J ; at 100 farenbeit, or at 25 below zero,
. i makes no difference. A very simple de
; vice, adjustable in half a minute,
adapts it to any point of temperature,
<o that no trouble is ever known in
condensation.
0. Its illuminating power is very
r great—a single flame equalling, as an
. average, the combined light of from
p. iimito to tlcmtg-fmr tallow candle;, eight A
i pound. The illuminating power .?
1 proved by the photometer to be foul
■ times that of coal gas.
. 7. It is exceedingly mild to the eye. j
So say oid and young.
lhe feature;— including the blower. |
chemical vessel, &c., completely ready 1
for the distributing pipes, will be sold j
at from S2O to S3O. This is unpardl
ieitd fur chcaj ness.
It. The coit of burning, or, the expense <f !
fee iujr.t. may be stated as follows :
In tile many tests we have made for
the two years past, I have frequently
. i succeeded, by careful management, in
; ohcnpehiisg' onr best and largest flame
down to une mill an hour—and the;
j worst I have ever done, under any cir
; cumstanees, was to make it cost a little ;
i! over three mills, or one third cf a cent per
hour. Those results have been, not for
, | a few trials merely, but have extended
over a two yiars use of the light ', and this
’! light will be found, in general praclfce,
i the cheapest artificial light extant.
,1 10, it can be manufactured on the
; smallest and largest scale—enough for
I one burner, or thousands and million;; of
! burners.
11, To sum up, in one word, this is,
and is pronounced by thousands who have
examined the whole subject, as not on
ly one of the triumphs of modern sci
ence, hut a 1- every way adapted to gcr
' er«l ire.
This invention indicates that an en
tire revolution isabout to be effected in
1 the inodes of obtaining heat and light,
■ and we invite those who wish to exam
ine for themselves, to call at the l);s
--! pa- • t office, where it will born oxbibi
-1 tion for a few days.
[ooM.vusit’ATsn.]
Mr. 1 Titer.'—What can be the reason
I! for not righting that portion of the city
, cast of the Presbyterian Church, and
, 30uth of Green street? Darkness is ter
, -riblo in that quarter during rainy, clou
dy weather, such as we have just had.
Some rich folks live here and theie in
that irreality, and that makes me at a
i loss to account for the lamps not being
, lighted.
If the city fathers should think me
officious, in thus bringing darkness to light,
they must attribute it to my sore toes,
] and bruised sinus.
Respectfully, Poker Moonshine.
. [Special Oorreepmuknec of the Dispatch.}
Rev. .3. R. Graves,
In my former letters I informed you
of the course of Rev. }. It. Graves and
his friends of the Ist Baptist Church.
The result was that after his trial and
conviction by the other wing of the
church, too sets of delegates were sent
up to the General Association at Leba
non, and that body decided in favor of
admitting the Graves delegation. The
friends of Dr: Howell presented a long
protest, with the request, that it he en
tered on the minutes, which was refused
So Dr. Graves is likely to be sustained
aftqrall! In haste.

Imfoktakt Decision. —The Supreme
Court of Tenuessee has decided the long
contested case, involving the question
of the legality of the subscription of
Blount county to the capital stock of the
Knoxville and Charleston Railroad Co in
pany. The decision of the chancellor,
Van Dyke, declaring the subscription
legal and obligatory on the county, was
affirmed.
Whiskers Pulled Oct. —I. L. Allen,
of Albany. N. Y.. met with a singular
and painful accident on Fiiday. fTe
wears, or rather did wear, a most luxn
riant pair of wiskers, a foot or less in
length. While running a sugar mill,
which was worked by steam, the whis
kers on and under the left side of his
face and neck, was caught in the ma
chinery and every hair of them torn
out by the roots, it leaving the skin as
bare as the hand.
Talk to me or Death.
Oh ! come and sit beside mo now,
In this calm twilight hour ;
The bird has sought her lolty bough,
The dew is on the flower ;
And lot mo feel thy hand in mine,
Upon my brow thy breath ;
And in this quiet evening time,
O, talk to me o; death.
I feel that life is ebbing fast,
I lmve not long to stay ;
But every four of death is past,
My spirit chides deiay ;
.But when I'm gone, oh, do not weep.
For our dear Savior saith,
“To those who love and serve the Lord,
There is no fear of death.”
0, talk to me, hut not in tones
Os fear and trembling dread ;
But tell mo of the lowly One.
Wh ne bloo i lor us was shed ;
The angel comes—l hear lira voice,
Upon my brow his breatu ;
0, come and with me now rejoice.
It is the angel, Death
