On last Sunday was a splendid affair
Tire scholars of the Presbyterian, Ft
James and St, John s Methodist Sab
bath Schools marched to tiie Baptist
Church where they were warmly wel
corned by the scholars of the Baptist
Sabbath Schools. There were between
COO and COO bright and smiling little
faces present, beside a large number of
parents, teachers and friends. Messrs.
Key. Ffear and Ryekso.n delivered 'in
teresting, appropriate and happy a!
dresses. Master Jacob Henry, a small
lad, delivered with great force and
beauty, a chaste and eloquent produc
tion, written for the occasion, and it
certainly reflected great honor upon the
head and heart that conceived it. The
Scholars sung many spirited and beau
tiful hymns with remarkable sweetness
and the doxology sang at the close, in
which every one that could sing, en
gaged in, was sung with an effect at.
once sublime and delightful. Every
one went away highly delighted with
the exercises of the evening, and we
know that it was a spontaneous wish of
ail that it would not be the last one
that they would have the pleasure of
witnessing »

At a regular meeting of the Mechan

evening, the following resolutions were
Unanimously adopted :
Re.iolved. That the thanks of Me
chanic, 2d Division, Independent Fire

hereby tendered to William A. Ramsay.

resentation of ‘‘Young America,” and
that it is the earnest wish of this Com
pany that his prosperity and happiness
may be as unbounded as is his liberali
ty and generosity.
Resolved, That a copy of the above be
signed by the President and Secretary
and transmitted to Mr. Ramsay, and
also published in our city papers.

Ttie Chinese Trade.
That the commercial expectations of
the European Powers which have effec
ted an enforced intercourse with China:
at the point of the bayonet, will be at
tended by disappointment, would ap
pear to be evident from a superficial
view merely of the wants and habits of
the Chiuese. Lord Elgin warned those
of his countrymen who were disposed
Jo rush into this apparently new avenue
of commerce, against the expectation
of large prospective gains by enlarged
intercourse with the Celestials. This
warning has been unheeded- if we are
to judge by the large exports of cotton
fabrics from Great Britain to the East
The Chinese are a people of great in- 1
dustrial capacities. They manufacture
every form of textile fabric that passes
through English looms. The only two
equivalents they have to offer for Euro
pean i uports are Teas and Silks To
enlarge the consumption of the former
in England, by a reduction of duty, to
some extent, is of course practicable
but no stimulus to the demand for the
peculiar products of China can produce
such ar equilibrium between the ex
ports and imports as to preclude the
necessity of again draining Europe of
its silver, as heretofore, to redress an
unfavorable balance of trade. The on
ly article which the Chinese seem dis
posed to accept as a commercial equiva
lent is opium If the Celestials largely
increase their consumption of this per i
nicious drug, and there is correspond '
ent extension of the culture in the
British East Indies, a proportionate in- ,
crease of trade in the products respec- i
I tively of China and the British posses
' sions in the East, would supply the ali
' ment to extended trade. Ilut what a
! basis for an extension of commerce’
j How can the English, a moral people,'
build up a largo trade, if this were pos-j
sible, on such a foundation? If, in the i
succession of events, the sphere of com- j
' merce becomes enlarged, by the growth ]
II of habits injurious to all races alike,
this is an inevitable consequence; but j
to widen that sphere, by stimulating
the desire of intoxication in a partial- j
lar per pie, while missionaries ate sent |
among them on errands of civilization
i and religious truth, is so wide a depar
- tore from the moral law. and so palpa
ble an inconsistency, as can scarcely
find a parallel in the history of the spe
ties. To what other results the forced
admission of Europeans to the Chinese
ports is to lead, is beyond our compre
hen-ion.—Charleston Xi.cs, 23 du11. ,
The "Goose ttuestloii.” .
It may lie amusing to some of our
readeis to puzzle their brains in the so- ,
lution of the oft heard of “Goose
• Question.” If any one can furnish a
. satisfactory solution we will thank
them, and we will then be “all right
on the goose question.”
A man goes to market to buy geese
| and buys two lots, containing thirty
• each. In purchasing the first lot, he
pays at the late of FI for 2. and sls
! for the 30. The second parcel he ob-
I tains at the rate of $1 for 3, and $lO
for the whole lot, thus giving $25 for
sixty geese.
Being dissatisfied with his bargain.
: he wishes to sell them for the amount
i they cost him. To save trouble in
! counting them lie sells them in lots of
jO, at $2 per per lot. It would seem
| that, having in separate trades bought
I them at the prices of 2 for sl, and S
•., for Si, he would lose nothing in selling
| them at the rate of 5 for $2. But af
| ter concluding the trade, he finds he
! has sole his sixty geese for $24, and us
i course, lias lost $1 by the trade. V\ hy
j j did he lose SI in selling the geese at the.
" j same rate that he paid for them t That
e | is the famous goose question.
