We do hope that our fellow citizens will give this notice prompt attention. On Wednesday night last, a man past the middle age of life, in company with a little girl about thirteen or fourteen years of age, erme to this city on the Paris stage, and stopped at the Dee House. The next day they were out in the city some hours, and when they returned he claimed that they were married, but it was earnestly de nied by the young lady, who gave the following account of the elopement, w hich really looks more like an abduc tion than anything else: She is an orphan, and is possessed, in her own right of several thousand, dol lars. She was living with her guar dian, in the largest town in one of the interior counties, the wife of whom is the sister of tire man, who claims to be her husband. She has been going to school, and has not yet “finished” her education, and declares that she has had no thought of marrying any one, and certainly never contemplated such a union with the man who was with her. The wife of her guardian, and this man and herself, went to Paris for the purpose of shopping. While there it was proposed to her to come to Mays vil’e for the purpose of completing her purchases, to which she cheerfully agreed. She supposed the whole party were coming until she got into the stage, when she learned that the lady was going to return home, and that she was to accompany this gentleman. The next morning after their arrival here, he proposed that they should go out in town to make their purchases. He took her to the ferry boat, and when she asked him if that was the way to the stoves, he told her it was, as all the best stores were on the other side of the river. In Aberdeen she says sonic lit tle old man," asked them to “stand up and join their right hands," which slit refused to do; nevertheless he pro nouoccd them “man and wife.” On their return to their hotel, at the instance of the man, who registered their names as gentleman and lady, they were placed in one room. Her screams, k on attempting to take some privileges with her, brought to her aid some of the attaches of the hotel, who listened to her earnest denial of their marriage, and to her pleadings foi protection, and placed her in a separate room. At her instance, she was the next day (Friday) sent to a relative inanoth er county, where she said she would be protected, while the gentleman went on a boat down the river. The panties are all respectable, and the affair is a very singular one. We have omitted the names until we have an opportunity to investigate the mat ter further. Addison wrote that “a comet is a sky rocket discharged by the hand that is almighty.” As much interest has gath ered about the present brilliant sky rocket, wbat a British astronomer, Mr Hinds, states, as to its future, may give satisfaction. "After it is lost in Eu rope,” he says, “this comet will tra verse the southern extremity of the constellation Sagittarius, and thence pass through Telescopium in Indus. | where it will be found about Christmas, I not far from the star ain Pavo. It will remain in the same constellation during j January and part of February, slowi y j approaching the principal star in Tou | can, and, indeed, will continue in that j part of the heavens until it has nearly | completed its next revolution round the j sun, and again presents itself to tliel gaze of another Donati a few hundred; years hence.” ».*.« Mlte Eloquence —There is no people in the world with whom eloquence is so ] universal a gift as the Irish. When Leitch Ritchie was traveling in Ireland, he passed a man who was a painful epee table of pallor, squalor and ragged ness. His heart smote him, and lie turned back. “If you are in want.” said Ritchie, with some degree of pee vishness, “why don’t you beg ?” J “Sure, it's begging lam yer honor." “You didn't say a word.” “Ov course not, yer honor : hut see how the skin j is speakin' through the holes in me trowsers ! and the bones cryin’ out through me skin ! Look at me sunken' cheeks, and the famine that's starin’ in \ me eyes ! Man alive ! isn’t it beggin’j I ain, with a hundred tongues ?” An honest son of Erin, green from; h*s peregrinations, put his head into a i lawyer's office, and asked the inmate : « A.’i what do you sell |here ?” “Block heads,” replied the limb of the law. “ Oeii, thin to be sure,” said Pat, "it must lv> a good trade, for I see there is but one of them left. . ■•> . ‘•When you seen man in business I who will not advertise or take a I newspaper, t. ><>k out for a mean, penu rious skin flint. too light to enjoy good health, and who holds a penny so| near bis eyes that he can’t see a dol lar." 1 Brownlow'a Knoxville Whig. The Rev. W. G. Bbownlow is hereaf : ter, to be both publisher and editor of Knoxville, Tenn. Whig. He says : I will not send a paper out of Knox ■ county without payment in advance, [ and I never will again employ a colleet ! ing agent, and thereby force any man, made in the image of God, to do as i mean nil act as that of repudiating a newspaper subscription. My crediting ; business shall be limited to Knoxville ! and Knox county, where 1 can see the parties in person, and of these l will take the products of the country. In all personal and political matters. I will take the course that suits me, without consulting any one, and hold myself responsible for the consequences. The weather for two or three days, past has been uncomfortably warm, i with occasional showers. The weather wise predict frost, “when the moon changes.” The moon changes to-mor j row, we believe, but it is difficult to even hope, in the present state of the ! weather, that frost will follow. It will be seen that the mortality is : remarkably small, notwithstanding ■ warm weather. —Savannah zYeies. ' Theatricals in Savannah. —From the following card, which appears in the New York Herald, of Saturday last, it appears that the Athemeum is to be ' opened next Saturday evening, the Oth ’ inst. : > The opening of the Savaunah Thea , tre is fixed tor the Oth November. The company will assemble on the 3d. I ! I am authorized by gentlemen at Savan rinah, as well as the President of the s; Theatre Company (now at the Astor House.) to state that I have leased the ’ only theatre in that city, and that ad vertisement having reference to the ex c " I istence of any other has no foundation | in truth, and is a piece of impertinence.
