Stating Jfeptcji. a O’CLOCK P.M, NOV. 6, 18 >H. Notice to Advertiser*. Advertisements for the Kyrnixo Dispatcii roost be handed in by eleven o'clock in the forenoon, in or ler to appear the .same day. LOCAL MATTERS. ffT The editor of tl.o Dispatch (ab sent at the time) deems it proper to say that the paragraphs under our local head on Tuesday with the signature of of 0 , were not written by our regular editor,” and one of them, in refer, encc to an accident to a young lady, was inserted without the knowledge of the “locum lenens.” Hill’s Air I.lg :t This Light has been in operation in our office for a number of evenings, and has proved itself of great illumina ting power, much beyond that of any other gas flame—the exhibitor, who has the right for tiiis State, has within a few days perfected his apparatus, and would be happy to see any of our citi zens at the Dispatch office on any even ing as it may suit their convenience. The apparatus geneiatcs the gas with out the aid of heat, is simple ami cheap; and is specially designed for the use of families -so that all may have the control of their own light. Come and see it. Stea in bunt- Lundutl. Thursday at 3 o’clock, p. m., a new Steamer of the Fashion Line was launch ed, from the Company Wharf of this city. ’Die dimensions of the steamer are as follows-Length 152 feet; Breadth 24 feet ; Depth G feet ; Height between decks 14 1-2 feet ; Engines 2, with 14 inches ; Cylinder 3 feet stroke ; Boilers 2—15 feet long and 42 inches: Diameter with 28 four inch flues in each. When completed, will have a ful Cabin with accommodations for one hundred passengers, and capacity for one thousand bale* cot toi). Itiscxpec ed to be completed in about six weeks and is to run as a regular Weekly Pack et between this city and Savannah. Who did the Wicked l)e«.d ? As one of the faithful guardians of the city, who nightly watch over its in terests, was observing two youthful members of the prize king, one the rep resentative of “Morrissey,” the other of the “Benicia Boy,” engaged in a rough-and-tumble encounter, a few nights since, some one not having the fear of God before his eyes wickedly maliciously and feloniously abstracted, carried a way,and appropriated to his own use, the cloak of said Watchman, of the value of eighteen dollars or other large sum. The owner of said cloak. Watch man No. 28, would no doubt feel under great obligations to the man who took it, if he would return it, but if not con venient to return it, a button or a small piece of it, as a memento of his absent companion, would be thankfully re ceived. ► « Frost • There was a frost in this section this morning. The Atlantic Cable. By general consent, on both sides of the big water, the Atlantic cable is giv cn over as a “dead cock in the pit,"anu none are now found “ so poor as to do it reverance.” It appears to heve com pletely fizzed out, and even those whose bread and butter depended upon keep ing up the delusive hope that something might yet come of it, have become con scientious upon the subject, and have resolved that if after a certain time, no signs of life in the concern shall be ap parent, that they will give over their efforts to humbug the public, and resort to more honest pursuits. The cable may therefore be said to be, figurative ly well as literally, “in the deep bosom of the ocean buried,” with but a slim chance, if any, of a resurrrection. As for ourself, we have very few tears to abed over its early demise, as we have all along been doubtful of its resulting hi any practical or permanent benefit to the great mass of the people, at least on this side of the water. It was too one sided a thing for the considerate portion of the American people ever to take any interest in it, and if we be lieved in special providences, we should believe its want of success was owing to the want of its mutuality, and the un fairness with which it was gotton up.— To us it seems that notwithstanding the people of America are prone to run af ter every strange god that comes along the Great Ruler of the Universe dispos es events so as to protect the American Republic from destruction. With both ends of the wire on British soil, and the whole concern under British control, in case of war between the two countries, it would have placed the United States altogether at disadvantage, as England would have the means of communica ting direct with this continent, while the United States would be deprived of all use of the wire for any purpose what ever. If we are to have an Atlantic Telegraph, let it he established upon term B-of equality,by which neither par ty will gain advantage of the other.— We are glad, therefore, that the Atlan tic cable is dead—dead as a door-m.il— and that there is no prospect of iU re surrection.—Columfotie Sun. It is high carnival in Montgomery, and the city is all alive with gaiety asid pleasurable excitement. Fair women and brave me*u throng the hotels ami line the banquettes ; brilliant equipage* i and dashing turnouts crowd the streets, 1 and all the day long the tread of many \ feet are heard .as they bear their owners , in pursuit of business or pleasure. At I no past season da we remember our city when it wore so gala an appearance, and j at no time have the elements been more i propitious. Indt ed, the weather is charming to a supe/la-live degree, and every one seems to ei\j°y an< l every thing else, to the fullnand most per- j feet extent. A more o!eligh|ful little city than our own, or one better calcu lated to meet i he expectation's of a pleas- | ure seeking crowd is not to ke found within the land.— Advertiser.
