Editor':—You wish to know how i a man lost SI in selling geese at the j same rate that he paid for them. He j purchased sixty geese in two lots of 50 j each, paying for the first lot at the rate of SI for 2, and sls for the 00 ; and for the second lot at the rate of SI for ► 8 and $lO for the whole lot. Thus giving $25 for sixty geese. He sold them in lots of sat the rate of $2 per lot. It would seem that having in separate trades, bought them at the prices of 2 for sl, and 3 for sl, he had lost nothing in selling them at the rate of 5 for $2. But, if 00 geese he placed in two rows or ranks, 30 in each row. and those in the first or front rank cost at the rate of $1 for 2, and sls for the 30 ; and those in the second or rear rank cost at the rate of $1 for 3, and $lO for the whole lot, making $25 for the sixty ; ar.d they are then detached in lots of 5, taking 2 from the first or front row, which cost at the rate of $1 for 2 or 50 cts. each, and 3 from the second row, which cost at the rate of $1 for 3, or 33 1-3 cts. each, it will be found that when the second row is exausted, there will he 10 geese remaining in the front row, and there will be only 10 lots of 5 detached, which, at the rate of 5 for $2 is but S2O, and of course the other 2 lots of sfor $2 which is 40 cts. each, must be made up of the remaining 10 of the front row, which cost 50 cts. each, and a clear loss is sustained of 10 cts. a head on the last 10 geese.— 'iliat is the way the man lost $1 in the goose trade. If the solution is satisfactory, I hope you will be “all right on the goose question.” And if it is not, please call on Com missary D. and ask him how it was solved at Milledgeville in July 1857. And it he can't “Ililt” it, perhaps “uncle Tom” can. Special Correspondence of the Dirpa'ch. Mo.vreo.MKUY, Nov. 3d, 1858. Mr. Juldor :—The State Fair is now [ being held here, the whole world of the State and the balance of his family is here. The city is crowded to over flowing, so much that Fillibusters find it difficult to get quarters. While speak ing of the inconvenience occasioned by the excess of visitors, I would ije doing injustice to the gentlemanly proprietors of the Montgomery Hall, Mess. Watson & Officer, if I did not acknowledge their kind attentions to your “Special Corres pondent,” I would recommend the traveling public to give those gentle-! men a call and judge for themselves 1 j saw hut little at the Fair that requires! particular notice. The main feature of j the show was stock, such as finely do- j veloped gentlemen. cows, and stallions, some trotting horses of no particular i speed, &e. Among the exhibitors Ino 1 tice James L. Coleman, Esq., with a Shingle'Machine, and Wm. F. Smith,! Esq., with Plants, &c.--of your city.— 1 The fairest and most interesting stock I saw, were the ladies. Alabama can cer tainly boast of beautiful women. In paying this tribute to the girls of Ala-i bama let me not be censured by Eva ! for I only note what I see and no more. Governor Moore of this State is stopping at the Montgomery Hall, and lam sorry to state that he is in had health. He is universally admired by the people —and I fear the frequent calls on him. will prove annoying. I hope he will be preserved for years to come, as he is one of the men that the South will re quire before many years pass over our head. Montgomery has improved much within the last few years, its private and public |lmildings would really be an ornament to any city. Its progress is onward, and I think it in advance of your dusty, without-water-place. Yours, Lapis. Beautiful Extract.—A delicate child, pale and prematurely wise, was com plaining, on a hot morning, that the poor dew-drops had been too hastily ! snatched away, and not allowed to glit ter on the flowers, like other happier dew-drops, that live the whole of the day through, and sparkle in the moon i light, and through the morning, on wards to noon day. “The sun,” said the child, “has chased them away in his heat, or swallowed them up in his wrath.” Soon after came rain, and a ! rain-how ; whereupon his father point ed upwards’ “See,” said he, “there stands thy dew drops gloriously reset, a glittering jewelry in the Heavens ; the clownish foot tramples on them no more. By this, my child, • thou art taught, that what withers on the earth blossoms again in heaven.” Thus the father spoke, and knew not that he spoke prefiguring words; soon after the delicate child, with the morning bright ness of his early wisdom, was inhaled, like dew-drops, into heaven !
