Our old friend, W«t. A. Lewis, of
Humming, Forsyth county, has writ
ten a characteristic letter to the Liw
rencevilleXeica in which he reviews the
progress of political parties in Georgia
since 1850, makes some pointed hits at
the prominent politicians, and an
nounces himself forever out of politics.
Here is a paragraph from his letter :
I did all 1 could to defeat Gov. Drown.
T voted for Ben Hill, and did all I could
in an open and honorable way to elect
him. If he had been successful in the
raoe. Hill might, and, I believe, would
have done the State as good service ns
Gov. Brown has done. 1 seriously ques
ts on if it could have been better, or
given more general satisfaction to the
people of Georgia. And my reason for
this belief is this: The Democratic
party had already been long in office
and power in the State ; their capacious
vaaws had been, in part, satiated with
the spoils. Upon the induction of Gov.
Drown into office, he could afford to cut
off “sups lies” somewhat, in the stealing
and plundering business ; and the lion
ust, non-office seeking portion of his
party and the whole of the opposition
fthe latter being out of office !) would
stand off', commend, and approve Gov.
Brown’s course and policy in this re
gard ! On the other hand, if Hill had
been elected, and those wiio supported
him, whigs, democrats, fire eaters, &c.,
under the party designation of “Ameri
auns" or "Know Nothings,” had got in
to office, all hungering and thirsting af
ter the loaves ami fishes,/com a trn yew's
jest, they would have managed, before
the expiration of his first term, to have
stolen not only the net profits of the
State Railroad, hut all of its earnings,
every way. and also the Road itself,
road-bed, iron, cars, machine shops, de
pots, water-sheds, pumps, and all, even
down to the old refuse iron and spikes,
and “snake heads,” scattered from one
end of the road to the other 1

New Mania fob the Glebs. —A Tai is
correspondent of the Philadelphia Bul

“The fashionable clubs here have got
a new hobby. Large wagers are laid on
the exit of promenades, performed fro ltl
one given point to another in Paris, ~,,

walking that distance blind .aided. —.
Thus it is not unusual to rr, eo t, on a
fine starry night, a number 0 f persons
escorting one of these adventurous
wights. A Mr. do St. R„ wagered one
thousand francs tliiity thous

after overcoming Lhe numberless diffi

having, very probably, for the first time
in his life, earned liis money by the
sweat of his brow.”

He lives and subsists entirely on the

Tiie Late Battles with the Indians. —
General Scott has issued a general order
commeiuliug the gallantry of the Ame
rican troops engaged in the numerous
combats with the Indians, which have
occurred since May, 1857. Very impor
tant results have been gained, and in
some quarters the Indians lmye been
completely subdued. The battles have
been very numerous, and many brave
deeds have beeu done and many re
markable victories won. Some of the
battles were fought against terrible
odds, and some of the struggles were
very severe.
