We are pleased to learn that Mr. Neveik has been engaged for six nights, and will make his first appearance to night, in his favorite personation of the Corsican Brother*. Mr. Bernard, also a favorite here, with Mr Cook and Mr. i Pexister. make their first appearance.; Ml Mai:chant appears as ?J. de Chat trim fiifirtud, together with the full strengtu of the company. T!:o pci form** ance concludes with the farce of the Dead Shot,. It is a capital bill, and will doubtless draw a crowded house. * Rlchitiotitl II uzzmvi. This cavalry corps paraded on Satur day, under Capt. Bearing. We have befoic alluded to the proficiency of their manicures, for a new company, and we are pleased to note a constant improve ment at every succeeding drill. * « Inquest. Almon Y. Day, of tliis city, was found dead near the Richmond county line, not far from the Georgia Railroad, on the 2-'id inSt. After a full examination the jury of inquest returned a verdict of death from Providential causes. We are indebted to Esquire CaiirolJ before whom the inquest was hold, for' the *»*?.>vc report of this melancholy occurrence. Mr. Day leaves a wife and children! in this city. »*<»*« Tucker & Perkins’ Art Gallery. We are pleased to notice that the j “ winter campaign” of tliese indefati gible devotees of art, is proving a| splendid success. We announced some weeks ago that they had employed a number of the best artists in the whole country, and would execute pictures oft every size and style, in oil, pastel, orj plain, in a style fully equal to the best! galleries in the Cniou. Mr. KmutMAX, who is engaged at their rooms, lias just completed a portrait of Gov. Clark, for tlie Senate Chamber. Here is Whitt the correspondent of the ' nah Re publican says of it: “Upon entering the Senate chamber this morning, 'the first object tiiat caught my eye was the new life-sized portrait of Governor John Clark, which had been raised to its place to the left of the President’s desk since the adjourn ment yesterday. The artist is Mr. Win. I!. Freeman, of Augusta, and his task— though undertaken under circumstances of great difficulty, the character of iris subject, and a dilapidated indifferent painting which lie found in the posses-: sion of a descendant, being hi- only: guides—lias been performed in a man ~ \ nor highly creditable to his professional 1 skill. The portrait is said,'by the old j friends of Gov. Clark, to he a good like ness. The coloring is better than that' of most modern paintings, while the! position, back-ground, lee., have been selected and executed with commenda ble taste. He is represented as having just risen from his desk in the Execu tive Cimmder, and, with clonk around him and cane in hand, is about sallying forth, when he is suddenly arrested by; the entrance of a visitor. Tire frame is! massive and well-knit; the face strong I and decided, showing, however, more of I the animal than of the intellectual! attributes. The eye is its best feature, and is penetrating and resolute. Hei looks, for all the world, a man destined; for the troubulons times of a rough and uncultivated age. We observed at the gallery a few days ago, the following portraits recently ex ecuted by Mr. Hunt, which indicates that our citizens are not slow to appre ciate genuine merit in the fine arts : A portrait of W. H. Goodrich; one of Arthur Bleak-ley ; one of Mr. Bob bins, of the Planter’s Hotel ; one of li. F. Chew, Jr., deceased ; one of Miss Chew, a child, deceased seven years ago: a fine life-sized portrait of Miss Geak, deceased, of Greene county; one of Kiciiard Taylor, of Athens, and one his brother, Robert Taylor, deceased, with many others, too numerous to mention. All the e are so entirely and perfectly lifelike and natural (for we have been familiar with most of the faces for some time) that we cannot point out any peculiarcxellences. We were especially pleased with a] beautiful portrait of Mrs. Morgan, de ceased, of LaG range, formerly Miss Battle. It is from a daguerreotype, taken by Mr. Tucker seven years ago, and coloied by Mr. Tomlinson. The artist has brought out every shade and tint in the most lifelike manner. She is represented silting by an open win dow which commands a view of the setting sun, and the golden tints in the distance are peculiarly artistic. We have only room to advise every body to visit tho gallery of our enter prising friends, and judge for them selves. —- Sentences. GROVER & BAKER’S SEWING MACHINES. K EASONS why the Grover & Baker Machine is universally preferred for family sewing: 1. It is more simple ar.d easier kept in order than any other Machine. 2d. It makes a seam which will not rip or ravel, though every third stitch is cut. 3d. It sews from two ordinary spools, and thus all trouble of winding thread is avoided, while the same machine can be adapted at pleasure , by a mere change of spool , to all varieties of work ( |. ' 4th. The same machine runs silk, linen thread j I ant i common spool cotton with equal facility. I stli. The seam is as clastic as the most elastM fabric, so that it is free from all liability tobreal r I in washing, ironing, or otherwise, j 6th. The stitch made by this machine is moss I beautiful tliuu any other made, either by hast : or machine.
