LOCAL MATTERS. Attraction at tiie Cnocert llall -The distinguished actor, Mr. Nefic, will ap pear to morow evening in the tragedy of Haroldefthe Mercant of Venice. This tragedy, which is spoken of in glow ing terms, is from the pen of Mr. Neafie. and the ability of the author will at once he blended with the excellent rendition of the actor. Iu order to give our readers an idea of the the plot, we subjoin a few extracts from an ex change: The story of the play is briefly this : Harold, a merchant of Calais, lias left his wife, Eleanor, and is in foreign land, on business of the State. In Calais there is a former rival of his, in the suit for Eleanor’s hand, named Yalmond. no\v Harold’s pretended friend.—After a protracted absence, Harold falls sick, and report reaches his wife that he is dead--To confirm the report, Valmond tercept Harold’s letters to his wife, while Yalmond replies to them, as from Eleanors, feigning her handwriting.— Meanwhile, under pretense of love for her, but realty to wreak revenge, Yal mond gains Eleanor’s consent to mar riage. Just as they are about to sign the writing which is to make them one, Harold, whose arrival at home has been till now unknown, appears in their presence. Foiled in his revenge in that way. Valmond contrives a plan like this: He hires, on promise of pecuniary re ward, a ruined gamester, named Lt Roux, whom he disguises with rich at tire. and instructs to represent himself to Eleanor, as having been a friend and companion of her husband, when abroad. Le Roux plays his part well, gains Eleanor’s confidence, and finally succeeds in stealing her minature, which he delivers to Yalmond. Yalmond, meanwhile Le Roux is acting his de grading part, acquaints Harold of the intimacy between Le Roux and Eleanor, suggests infidelity of the latter, and produces Eleanor's minature in alleged proof; thus, to poison Harold’s mind against his wife. Harold, on confirm ed Suspicion, separates from his wife. Yalmond now’ seeks Eleanor, under pretense of sympathizing with and con soling her: hut really for diabolical pur poses. He does not, however, succeed. At length Harold's eyes are open in the plot, and he becomes satisfied of his wife’s faithfullness, and of the vil lainy of his enemies; but meanwhile Eleanor has become insane. When next Harold sees his wife, she is stand ing on the verge of a high cliff ; about! to cast herself thence; but he has no 1 power to rescue her. Lo Roux has died by Valmond’s hand. Harold killed Valmond ; and then himself dies from' excess of anger and revenge mingled! with regret. Aside from the play being decidedly effective as a stage representation, it is, as a literary production of great merit j The verse is graceful and Hawing; and in many parts the language is remark ably fine. To instance a few : Eleanor, about to begin the marriage writing, lovingly says : *• Mv husband, now, forever, I bid firewei! to tliee : if thou’rt in Heaven O let thy spirit look in pity down And smile forgiveness on my present act. Or, if thou livest, may all the elements— Fire, earth, air, water—all combine at once To bear thee back to me, ere yet the last Aud fatal consummation of the deed Shall rend all link between us.” Harold, in communicating to his wife! his knowledge of her alleged unfaith fulness, thus-mournfully and beautiful ly speaks: “ I learned, last night, The story of a wife, whose love did seem To reach ntfond all compass, save alone ilis love who boasted hers. With him ’twas life, His fortune called him hence. In his true breast Sat endless trust in her. His exile o’er He sought his home, in flood of new born joy, The happy days rolled on. but soon he found The garden of his love so thick up grown With foul and baleful weeds, that not a flower Os modest nature could have rcom to thrive Anud the pollution. Bristling thorns Did there usurp where violets should grow, To sting him at his couching. On her brow. Whose marble was of Heaven, stain had fallen, Stain of a guilty love, blotting forever Its pure and pristine whiteness.'' Eleanor, about to throw herself from the cliff, thus poetically and thrillingly exclaims : ‘Hark I I'm called! Ye buoyant clouds, spread now your milky sails And fly withlightningspecd, while on your crests I sail to seek toy love.” It were pleasant to continue our ex tracts from this play ; but we will not, preferring that the reader should hear the language fresh from the lips of the respective charcters of its representa tion. - Smitten Deatli—lmiutats. On last evening, about 8 o’clock, a man very intoxicated, was fouud lying on the side walk, on Bridge How, and conveyed to the City Marshal’s office, when he was found to he in a dying condition, and expired in ten or twelve minutes after his arrival. He was ap parently about forty years of age, about five feet ten inches high, of dark com plexion, and shabbily dressed, and a stranger in our midst. There was noth ing on his person tending to show who he was. Coroner Baker was promptly on the spot, and held an inquest over the body. The Jury rendered a verdict of the death of a “man to them un known, from Unknown cuuse or causes.” Coroner Baker, also held an inquest on the 30th ult., on the body of a color ed woman named Jennie, at the planta tion of Mrs. Sarah T. Greexwooc, tea miles below Augusta, on the river. The woman belonged to Jons MoGowl, de ceased. The verdict of the Jury was “ that she died of come cause un known." Augusta. We recently spent a few days in this city, and its vicinity, and were truly gratified to see so many evidences of j prosperity and thrift, not only in the stirring aspect of the principal business ‘ street, but in the substantial improve ments almost every where visible. Au gusta is indeed a beautiful city, with an ? intelligent enterprising and courteous r population. The latter—and by no ® means the least pleasing feature of its j character to a stranger—we have on ] more than one occasion noticed. • ' We stepped into the Medical College, ! and listened to part of a lecture from : Prof. Miller, to a very large and iutoili i gent looking class of young gentlemen, j j We have frequently heard the learned; Professor on other "topics, and listened 1 j with pleasure to his views on this occa-j - J siou. I ted the large Library and Museum at-1 | taclred to this old and standard institu tion, which we were happy to learn, is in a prosperous condition, notwithstaud- j e ing its many rivals. - The population of Augusta is now es v timated at twenty thousand.
