Tlieie was grief among the Young Americans on yesterday afternoon, when it was found that there would he no performance until night. But the noise of the elephants inside the can vas only served to heighten the pleas ure of anticipation, and at night there was a crowd to witness their wonderful performances. All bear witness that Antony and Cleopatra are wonderful ani mals. They will*perform again this afternoon and twice to-morrow. Hook Sale. The great sale of Books Griffin's Auction House, continues every even ing. A very large stock still remains, embracing many most valuable works, besides tire usual variety of fancy ar .tides. .».* Fast Time. Our bands were hurried yesterday to get the abstract of Washington news that were being received by telegraph during the morning into our issue of that evening. At 1 o’clock the Charles ton papers came to hand with the same matter, having received it last night, “ liy the Morse Line.” How is it that tlie Associated Press are thus outdone on an occasion of so much importance ? Concert Hull. Ecv. Dr. Ryder will lecture at Con cert Hall on Thursday night, for the benefit of the new Catholic Church. His theme will be “The Catholic Loyally to " the Institutions of the country.’’ He has . few superiors ns a man of profound in W teilect, and fascinating eloquence. Young MoSI Clirlstlnu Assot-lnflon. The meeting Monday night was very well attended, and a very interesting one. The meeting was opened by the Pres ident reading a portion of the Sacred Scriptures, and prayer by J. Harvey Hull, Esq. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Elected, two associate, one active and three honorary members. Letter from the editor of the Reporter read and, after a pleasant interchange of views, referred to the committee on statistics. A resolution, relative to a more strict observance of the Christian Sabbath, introduced at a previous meeting, was laid on the table for the present, on ac count of the absence of the mover. An invitation from the Young Men?s Christian Association of Savannah, to he present with them, at a celebration in their city, January 22d, 1859, was read, and on motion, cordially accepted. Designation of Corresponding Secre tary read and accepted. Resignation of Librarian read and ac ' cepted. W. G. Johnson was elected Corrres ponding Secretary. W. G. Wiiidby was elected Librarian. A lengthy, instructive and interesting discussion took place, relative to winter campaign and the plan of operation, which finally resulted in the selection cf the following: The anniversary address, on January Sd, to he delivered by Tiiomas R. R. Cobb, Esq., to he followed, once a fort night, by several eminent men. Rev. T. J. Bowen is expected to deliver, du , ring the course, a lecture on Central k " Africa, which from the reputation of the Speaker, will, no doubt, prove quite an attractive theme. The meeting closed with singing and prayer. Delightful—ln a Horn. Some son of Orpheus gave the peo ple on Broad street a specimen of his vocal powers lastnight about 7 o'clock, that certainly entitles him to some spe cial mark of consideration. He sang loud enough, and long enough to he heard by half the town, and he ought certainly not to he permitted to waste such a perfect gush of the concord of sweet sounds without some slight token from his audience. Had we been near enough we would have wanned his * throat with a hot potatoe as a slight but becoming testimonial for his effort to convince the public that he had mus ic his soul. * , Poetic.—Old Master brought his fe rule down—his face was angry and red —“Now Anthony Clair, go rest you there, along with the girl 6, he said.— Then Antony Clair, with mortified air, and his chain down on his breast, crept slowly away, and sat all day by the girl that loved him best. ‘-Jenny, ' said a mother to a sou, nine years old, “go and wash your face ’.J am r ashamed to see you coming to dinner with so dirty a mouth." I did wash it, mamma," and feeling his upper lip, he added gravely, “I think it must be ® moustache coming.” I The Washington Union, in a review of the Magazines for December, nfter mentioning several with critical notices, says: \ “There are other periodicals which - we sometimes hear of, hut ihe publish era and booksellers are evidently afraid > 1 we shall let the world know of their existence, for they take especial pains not to send us copies. A great outcry lias been raised about the lack of pat- i ronage for Southern literature, but it is almost entirely the fault of publishers, j Russell’s Magazine, for instance, pub lished somewhere in the South, and! ably sustained by its contributors, never j by any chance lias found its way to a Washington bookstore.” And if it comes to Augusta it is not| our happy privilege to see it. ■ Mi sSlollieand Miss l’eggie are two; sisters. Miss Mollie is the eldest. She as not a member of any church, hut, j like all well-bred young ladies, says her; prayers before retiring. One night she; carried with her to her room a pickle, and laid it upon her bureau, thinking she would eat it after her devotions. —j She knelt at tl.e foot of her bed for the! purpose. Peggie entered the room, and ! seeing her deeply absorbed, thought to j improve the opportunity liy appropria ting tiie pickle to her own use. She had bitten off a piece, and in chewing! it made a noise, which her sister heard, who, wishing to know the cause, look ed up, and beholding Peggie devouring the pickle, hurriedly arose, exclaiming, “oLord l excuse me a moment; Peggie is eating my pickle !' ’ Suicide bt a Printer. —Mr. .las. W. Bennett, a printer by occupation, and for ten or twelve years past foreman of the Southern Recorder office at Milleiige ville, disappeared Tuesday night last, and after diligent search no trace of . him could be discovered. Late Satur day afternoon, his body was discovered in a well, in the street, nearly opposite the office. Mr. B. had been for some ! time, much addicted to intemperance, and it is supposed he threw himself into the well while laboring under mania from that cause. He was about thirty five years of age, and left no family. Laroe Purchase of Beef Cattle.— The Belfast News Letter states that an American gentleman, Mr. Barrett, who has large estates in Kentucky, United 1 States, lias shipped at Derry, for Anieri ; ca, almost all the prize stock lie could [ get from the late royal shows in Eng- j . land and France. The entire stock is valued at £5,000. The freight alone; will cost SI,OOO. . - - Whoever is afraid of submitting any ' question, civil or religious, to the test • of free discussion, is more in love with 1 his own opinion than with truth. IsTT l e prospectus is out for a new paper in Columbia, to be called the . Dimnioniti. No name is appended to , the announcement. mw"COTTiiKEB PLANTERS are informed that I have succeeded in producing a Prolific Cotton that yields more to the stalk than any 1 have ever seen. Being fond o; ex peri m nt, 1 have tried, for the last twenty-five years, every va riety of Cotton that promised a large yield, and have found nothing that equals my present , stock of Seed. It i 3 a Hybrid of the Boyd’s and other Prolifics with the Petit Gulf. I have stalks now In my office, Four feet high, with 155 bolls on it. Three feet high, with... .125 “ “ Two feet high, with... . 75 ‘ 4 “ As many as two hundred and fifty bolls and forms have been counted on a few large stalks. Every person who has seen my crop pronounce it the heaviest boiled cotton they ever saw. (Jne planter pulled off a limb, twelve inches long, having nine bolls on it. A~ tliis Cotton does not limb as long as Petit Gulf, it can be planted closer in the row and drill, thus securing a greater number of stalks to the acre. I will fill orders for Seed at One Dollar and Twenty-five Cents per bushel, sacked in new cotton sacks, and delivered in Augusta, and for warded as directed. Address .
