The third lecture of the series of “Lectures to the young “ will be delivered : theme —The Scientific objec tions to Chri'iianity Considered.'' *.a.« ' Geo. D Prcntiif. This gentleman—the talented and witty editor of the Louisville Journal is to lecture in Savannah on the 21st and 22d inst. Will he not also favor Au gusta with a visit ? He has many ad mirers here who would, we doubt not. greet him with a crowded auditory. JTook Bindery of Messrs. Richards Son. We were agreeably surprised, the other day, on a visit to the bindery of this enterprising firm, to find their fa cilities so perfected for the execution of hook binding, and the manufacture of blank books. We do not believe the specimens that we saw of Ledgers, and other blank books, can bo surpassed in the United States at the same prices.— They are determined to spare no efforts to compete in all respects with the best establishments in the country. The Senior of the firm was brought up in the business and has twenty years prac tical experience, and he is determined to rdlow our merchants, mechanics, county officers, &c, no excuse for send ing abroad for blank books; while in his Bookstore ho also offers a very supe rior selection of stationery, and all the appurtenances of the counting room,in addition to his largo stock of Law, School and Miscellaneous Books always embracing tire latest publications This firm deserve the patronage of the public, and we have no doubt they will receive a liberal share of it. UrAarkTv Wo were gratified to greet this distin guished Phrenologist this morning who has just returned from Milledgeville where he has been weighing our law makers, and others in his scientific bal ances. He will stop a few days at the Augusta Hotel, and we trust he will fa vor us with another course of lectures. iifngs Shingle Blnclitne anil Full/,’. Horn Power, Wo paid a visit on yesterday to the United State Hotel, where these two. excellent machines were in operation, and we hardly know which to admire, most—for they are both alike useful, and desirable in their places. We have, before alluded to Kino's Shingle Ma . chine, which is bound to supercede cv ; ery other method of shingle-making, and this horse-power needs only to bg known to come into general use as a motive power ,ji plantations, &e. The Chronicle & Sentinel alluding tp these inventions says: Yesterday, wo saw this single Har dline in operation, driven by Fultz's horse power. Os the Shingle Machine we have already expressed the opinion that it was the perfection of machinery for that purpose when we saw it pro pelled by steam power ; and now that we have seen it driven by this horse power, which we also regard a pefeci machine, we are but confirmed in thg opinion. The horse power combines great strength and durability, and is in its construction, simplicity demonstrated, havingonlyfour wheels. It cannot be sur passed in eilher of these requisites, and we think far surpases any other power ever invented for lightness of draught. With a single mule, it drives the Ship glc Machine with rapidity and with ap parent ease to the mule—indeed he seemed to pull it with scarcely an effort. This power, therefore, (which may also b? used for any other purpose on farms, for gins, mills and threshers,) reuders the Shingle Machine doubly valuable, as it may be transported and put in opera tion in a few hours in the forest when ever the timber is most convenient. Itf deed it would be less labor to transport the two machines miles, and put them in operation, than to haul the timber of a single tree a half a mile to the machine. This may seem extravagant to tluy-e who have not seen the machines, but it is strictly true. Mrs. Partington's Very Last. “ Where did you get so much money Isaac?” said Mrs. Partington, as he shook a half handful of copper cents before her, grinning all the while like a rogue, as he is ; “have you found the hornicopia, or ha 3 anybody given you a request?” She was a little anxious. “I got it from bets, ’ said he chucking the coin into the air, and allowing half of them to clatter and rattle about the floor with all the importance of dollars. “Got them from Bets, did you,” re plied she, “ and who is Bets, that she should give you money ?—she must be some low creature, or you would not speak of her so disrespectably. I hope you will not get led away by any deso late companions. Issac, an become an unworihv membrane of society.” How tendcilv the iron bowed spectacles beamed upon him! “I mean bets,” said he, laughing, “ that I won on Burlingame.” “ Dear me,” she ex claimed. "how could you do so, when gaming is such a horrid habit? Why, sometimes people are arranged at the bar for it ” She was really uneasy un til he explained, that, in imitation of older ones, he had bet some cents on -Burlingame, and had won. Eaojr New Mexico.. —The New Mexi can mail of tlm 15th nit., has reached ; Independence. The news is unimpor tant. A letter dated Alburquerqne, giving a summary of the Nevajo war, ■' closes ns follows : “The cry is for man. ‘ Volunteers must be called out. I hear ■ no dissenting voice to this anywhere. A Montreal dispatch, dated Bth De- ( comber, says, “The Governor of the Hudson Bay Company says, that there is no truth in the rumored murder of Lords Grosvcnor, Cavendish andAshlcy, by the Crow Indians," ..(»•. The Emperor Napoleon has returned ( the compliment recently paid to him by 1 1 ■ Queen Victoria, having forwarded to; . Her Majesty a twelve pounder howitzer, j invented by himself, accompanied by the complete harness for six horses.— The piece bears the name of Alliance. The Nebraska City News calls atten tion to the fact that slavery has never yet been prohibited by the Legislature of that Territory, and the "institution" still exists there. — It is understood that a hill for the suppression of polygamy in Utah and all the other territories will ho intro duced at an early day in Congress and vigorously pressed. Col. James Chesnut, Jr., lias been elected to the United States Senate by the Legislature of South Carolina.
