We acknowledge an invitation to dine to-day at tbe United States Hotel, on ■which occasion we are promised fresh shad, which Clark informs ns he now receives every day. This is the first we have heard of shad in this market, and before our readers receive this ofwfcd account of it, we shall he indebted to our friends of the “States'' for a savory sample thereof. May their shadows never grow less. ReH)peutng of the African Stave Trade. Two hundred and seventy-seven of the cargo of Africans recently landed near Brunswick, were brought up the 1 Savannah river, and put ashore yester day evening about 3 o’clock, at the mouth of Horse Creek, three miles be-; low this city on the Carolina side. One of the river boats is supposed to have taken them from the boat which brought them by Savannah in the night, to a point twelve -miles above that city. We learn on good authority that the original cargo consisted of 420, and that not one of them died, or was seri ously ill on the passage. It is supposed that the Wanderer acted only as a decoy boat, and that the vessel that brought them is at large. Citizens of our city • are probably interested in the enter prise, and those brought up the river are supposed to be their share of “the spoils ’’ aud have been distributed on their plantations. It is quietly hinted that this is the third cargo landed by the same company during the last six months. -«• Fruits of the Discussion. We learn that one of our citizens has bought a slave from the lot recently landed just below this city, for which he paid $250. He is a stout boy about 1A yedVs old, and considerable curiosity has been manifested this morning to see the “distinguished visitor.’’ The question has often been asked what practical good can result from the agitation of the revival of the slave trade? We point to this cargo of stur dy laborers, delivered from the dark ness and barbarism of Africa, to be ele- vated and christianized on our soil.—! We point to the price paid for this jolly son of the jungles, and compare it with the exorbitant prices paid for the fancy and less valuable negroes here. And we claim that these results are the be ginning of the blessings to flow in upon the South from the fearless advocacy of the revival of the stave trade by one or two independent presses in this State and South Carolina. This trade may j he called piracy by a false construction 1 of a foolish law, but the day will come I when the South will make it the right arm of her legitimate commerce. And ! then there may he some chance even for j us poor editors to own a sooty skin or; two. Who knows ? * - Fair at the Episcopal Church. The congregation of the Church of | Atonement will hold a fair, at Masonic j Hall, commencing on Thursday eve- ; * ning, and continuing through the week. i The object of this Fair is to aid in car-j rying out certain benevolent objects of . the church. Owens and Ed ward Henkell. At a subsequent meeting of the Board \ Wm. M. D'Antignac was unanimously re-elected President. ■ Bridge at Sand Bar Ferry. We are pleased to see that a move ment is on foot to erect a bridge at the Sand Bar Ferry, three miles below the city. Such a work would be a great public convenience, not only to the res identsof Beach Island,but to the districts beyond,as well as to our city. It would bring a large amount of produce to our domestic market, and the forests across the river would afford a large supply of wood, now getting to be a scarce eom , modity. We trust that our citizens; will co-operate in this matter. We perceive from some little green hand bills about town that a feminine | disciple of a “combination of newly dis covered sciences” is at one of our hotels, where she proposes to tell those who favor her with a call, all about the past, present and future, and to reveal to them what numbers will draw prizes in the different lotteries. Her terms are exceedingly moderate; only 50 cents for an examination ; SI with , examination and future, and you cau ' go the entire swine, past, present and fu ture, for the moderate sum of $2. If ■she can tell what numbers will draw prizes in lotteries, we would recommend i her to the affectionate consideration of i Sergeant Birnev, and Mayor Tiejian, of N. Y., as the most available means of breaking up Swan & Co., as they seem j to have met with rather bad luck be i fore the courts. ; Candidly, these wandering feminines, with their fortune telling, and other j scientific accomplishments, ought not to Ihe tolerated by the authorities. Miss Wellington may be a very proper wo man—we never saw her and trust we never may—but she is humbugging the public and leading silly souls to believe ‘ and ccuntenance a wicked imposture. : She is obtain'ng money under false pre tences, which is an offence against the law. When God Almighty concludes to lift the veil of the future to the ken of us poor mortals we have no idea that jHe will limit His revelations to the mummery of a peripathetic female all the way from England. We advise ’; Miss Wellington to hurry back North as soon as possible, where fools are more j numerous, for this latitude is not conge nial to her profession. P. S. Miss W. proposes to cure drunk enness. Meantime, it is understood that I Senor Mata, the Juarez Minister, who recently left Washington, has gone to Vera Cruz to obtain full powers from Juarez to negotiate a treaty at Wash ington for the settlement of all Ameri ! can claims against Mexico, and to guar antee the i ight of way across Chihuahua, j Sonora and other Mexican territory, to : California. It is believed to be the in i tention of our Government, in case he i succeeds in his mission, to receive him immediately, and to recognise the Juarez Government—unless some new and im- I portant charge in Mexican affairs should j occur.
