LOCAL MATTERS. Theatre—Concert Ifnll. Our readers will bear in mind that the present dramatic season closes to morrow night. To night the per formance will commence with the great play of Dan Co-tar Dr Buzan } in which Mr. Nkafie will personate his celebrated character of Don Caesar, and conclude with the Swiss Cottage. - Circus. We venture a guess that the United States authorities who have parties connected will) the Wanderer under arrest, will also need more evidence than has yet ap peared, to support a prosecution. The preliminary examination comes off to morrow, and as to tlio dangers of their conviction, we are “no anxious man.” There is such a thing as waking up the wrong passenger. AVe most-cordially return thanks to the Constitutionalist for oven itseqmvocal endorsement of our efforts to obtain the news “ahead of the morning pa pers.” If an item of news is afloat, we certainly do not sit cloistered in our sanctum and wait for somebody to in form us “ that they had seen it,” be fore we give it to our readers. In spite of the difficulties we labor under, in making up our news columns in time for the early departure of the evening mails, we usually succeed in getting any late items of intelligence, and do not hesitate to ride a Gilpin-race after it, to Hamburg, or a few miles out of the city. AVe protest, however, at his con clusion, that we ever “return home and wait and see what the morning papers have to say.” Irish Volunteers. I’n Sunday night, contrary to his abstemious habits, Brown concluded to indulge himself in the luxury of a hot whisky punch. The liquor had the effect, to set his spirits in a glow. Brown argued witli himself, arithmetically, if one whiskey punch will make a man feel good, what will two whiskey pun ches do ? He took another punch. It was now bedtime, and Brown becoming slightly heavy, started towards his dor mitory. As before stated, lie roomed in the third story. Being a little liea vicr on this occasion than usual,Brown of course experienced more difficulty in getting up Stairs. Owing to this fact, he thought lie had attained a greater altitude than he really had. ihe con sequence was, the first place that Brown in all innocence, entered, was the room immediately below bis own, in tlio se cond story. This room belonged to a lady and gentleman, but was unoccu pied at the time of Brown’s entrance. The room was very much like his own, and Brown, not being intimately ac quainted with himself, proceeded to di vest himself of his habiliments and got into bed. Just as lie had fallen in to a sort of dreamy, drunken wakeful ness, lie felt a soft hand wandering over bis face and pressing his temples in a ve ry affectionate manner. He leaped with a sudden bound into the middle of the floor, and the lady for such it was, screamed and ran down stairs. Meet ing her husband, who bad just come in the lady informed him of what she had discovered, and she very nearly made a terrible mistake. The husband went up to his room, accompanied by a coil pie of servants, and found the door locked. In answe to repeated thump ings on the door. Brown answered, in great indignation, that rather than he interrupted in that way ho would leave the house, and accordingly commenced! to harness up. Meantime the true state | of things flashed across his befuddled | intellect; as he opened the door he m stood out in bold relief to husband and servants, looking the picture of shame and confusion. Being a proverbially I polite man. Brown stood humbly pas-: ing bis hands over each other, as he related how the mistake occurred, seem ingly Washing his hands in invisible soap Ami imperceptible water'. His profuse apologies and a hasty ex it saved him from being percipitated headlong down stairs He lias not been seen at faille since, and is supposed to have sought another boarding house. St. Loins. Ccmmmial Inielligutte. | H EEKLVJtKVIE \\ . AUGUSTA DISPATCH OFFICE 1 December 16, 1858. ’ f REMARKS.—During the entire week under review, the weather has continued unfavorable, ant! the streets in a most disagreeable condi tir.n for the transaction of business This has depressed trade, especially in produce. To-day the clouds have cleared away and the sun is out. There are a large number of country merchants in town, and tboy are buyiug freely of groceries at about the prices of last week .f We have made very few changes in our figures, and refer to our table for correct quotations. COTTON.—In our last report we left the mar ket in a quiet condition, and our quotations were for Good Middling 11?*, Middling Fair II ? 4 cents. The receipts of the week have been 9,008 bales, agaiust 9,195 for the week previous. On Friday there was a good inquiry, with an advancing tendency. On Saturday prices continued full, and all that was offered was taken at figures ranging from 10?* toll* cents. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the offerings were light, and the limited transactions indicated no material change in prices. To-day the market presents no new features, and we quote Mid dling at umi%, Good Middling 11?-,', Middling Fair 11 Scents, as the ruling rates at the close of our review. Planters are not disposed to sell freely at those prices, and operations are likely to be limited for some time, unless the news from ab: oad should be of an unexpected character. It will be seen from our tables that the receipts continue Leavv, and are now in ex cess of last year, G'22,103 bales. The exports are also large, being to foreign ports 234,870 bales, aud to coastwise 146,932 in excess of the last sea son. The manufacturing interests are quite ac activc, and the demand will be fully equal to an average supply. Various estimates are going the rounds as to the extest ot the crop, and the probable tendency of prices; but it is all guess-work at best, and we leave our readers to mako tbeir own calculations, and be guided by their own judgments as to the time J to buy or sell. At th« same time, prices art now at a remunerative figure—the period is at hand when money will bo needed for the liqui dat on of debts, and the general good will cer tainly lie subserved by the prompt sale of cri ps at hand. The instances are very rare where the farmer has lost money by refusing te take 11 cents lor his Cotton. The market to-day is rather unsettled, which j is tlie effect of the steamer's news, but prices ■ remain as last quoted. Total sales 1207 bales, at the annexed rates: 12 at 10, 10 at 10*, 00 at 10Xi 24 at 10*, 28 at 11, 24 at 1! 484 at 11 >4, 168 at 11 5-16, 333 at 1! ?■£, 84 at 11 cents Re ceipts 1658 bales.
