To-night concludes the engagement' of Mr. NEA.ni; at Concert Hall, on' which occasion Re will take a farewell benefit. Mr. Neafie is an artiste, and justly occupies a leading position among the stars in his profession. His person ations are spirited and truthful, his elo cution finished and graceful, and his reading—saving an occasional guttural drawl—correct and euphonious. We trust he may have an audience which will evince a becoming appreciation of his merits as an actor. Miss Frost, during her engagement, has been gradually but surely winning upon the applause of our theatre goers —and for her correctness, naturalness and the exquisite taste she exhibits, as well as -for her graceful bearing upon the stage, is highly appreciated. She always knows her part, and if she con fines herself to that school of the dra ma, within the scope of her powers— which are hardly equal to the higher walks of tragedy—she will acquire an enviable position on the stage. Mr. Marchant’s company— we regret that space forbids that we should allude to other members of it who have made fa vorable impressions here—have con ducted themselves reputably, and sus tained, with credit, all the pieces brought out during their stay. We trust they will return at an early day, and bring in succession tlio eminent artistes en gaged for Mr. Marchant's other thea ties. .. gST' Yankee Robinson gives his last pjrforjnance of the season to-night.— Go early to secure a comfortable seat. Italian Opera Coining. Wo are pleased to learn that Mr. Makciiant has engaged StrakoscH’s Italian Opera Company, to appear at Concert Hall on Thursday 23d inst., and in Savannah on Friday and Saturday nights, 24th and 25th insts. The Constitutionalist, in announcing their engagement, says: The company consists of M'lle. Puro di, M’me. Cora De Wilhorst, M’me Strakosch, Mr. Squires, Labocetta, Amo dio, Barili, Nicola, and M; Strakosch ; and it is almost superfluous for us to add, embraces more talent than any which has ever traveled in this country. The programme for Thursday evening will contain gems and concerted pieces from many of the most celebrated ope ras and oratorios, and he altogether more attractive than any offered here. Concert Hall will be filled as it has not been for many years. To Keep Tires Tight on Wheels. — A corresponeent of the Southern Plan ter furnishes valuable information on this interesting subject. I ironed a wagon, some years ago, for my own use, ami before putting on the tires, I filled the fellys with linseed oil, aud the tires have worn out, and were never loose. I ironed a buggy for my own use, seven years ago, and the tires are now as tight as when put on. My method of filling the fellys with oil is as follows : I use a long cast iron oil heater, made for the purpose ; the oil is brought to a boiling heat, the wheel is placed on a stock, so as to hang in the oil, each felly. The timber should be dry, as green timber will not receive oil. Care should he taken that the oil be made no hotter than a boiling heat, iu order that the timber be not burnt. Timber filled with oil is not susceptible of wa ter, and the timber is much more dura ble. Wealth of Gotham and Athens. — The wealth of the two great centres of Boston and New York amounts to eight hundred millions of dollors—New York having $535,000,000, Boston $275,000,- 000, or a little more than one half that of New York. The property of Boston is one hundred millions more than that of the city of Philadelphia, and nearly three times that of Baltimore. It is said that Boston lias more property, per capita, than any other city in the! world. ■ End of the Man who Blew Up Brock’s Monument.- Benj. Lett, the man who was convicted about twenty years since! of the blowing up the Brock Monument at Queenstown Heights, but escaped as he was being taken to prison, died in Milwaukie, on Thursday, the 9th in—! stant from the effects of poison, as is supposed, administered by a man who is under arrest. j v n " Dominion. : w.,1 ' , has been on a visit to the | Northern Neck of Virginia, and writes I some interesting letters to his “Horn. ol lV-i al - . them contains avert prettily written incident attending hiV Visit to a saw mill in Middlesexcounty ire says i The miller was a very sickly, grave, incommunicative looking man who crossed over from the tumbledown shan v under which his rough machinery was doing its work, and applying a key to the padlock of a stone hut near by, invited me in. The single room was of wigwam size and proportions, aud the furniture consisted of one long and rude bench, a few ragged bedclothes bundled up in the corner, a tea kettle, one plate, knife and fork, and a broken frying pan. A gun stood in the corner, and on the floor lay a wild duck, which had been shot that morning on the millpond. A question as to the num ber of kinds of this bird so plentiful in the region round about, (of which he said there were thirty, naming, among others, the blue wing, the can vass-hack, the dipper, the black duck, the bill-cott. the butter-duck, the sum mer duck, the red head, and the mal lard,) led to conversation as to the climate, etc., etc., and I was very much struck with the quiet justness of his remarks, and their phraseology, and, withal, a knowledge of the world which is only got commonly by much travel and observation. Under his slouched hat was a physiognomy very nobly cut, aud his frame, spite of his' heavy and tattered clothes, showed the very finest of herculean proportions. I took a very great fancy to my new friend as we sat over the smouldering logs of his huge fireplace, and speculated not a lit j tie as to his probable history. And ] who do yon suppose he was? No less a person than McKnight, the once famous Hercules of “Turner’s Circus,” who, some years ago, used to astonish the j world by resisting with his own legs I and arras the pull of four horses, let ; ting a forty two pounder be discharged upon his breast, lifting unheard of i weights, and many similar wonders of skill and strength. In one of these , horse encounters he had strained some ' vital portion of his loins, and had comej to Virginia to go into sickly retirement j as the overseer of a saw mill. But the sight of that magnificently moulded man, as he lay stretched, the next morning, on the rough bench where he sat and conversed, (for as we j passed, or. our return, we learned that lie had died, a few hours after we had left him,) was the impressive picture in which these introductory remarks will I explain lgy peculiar interest, i Think a moment of the poetry—l | may even Gay the sublimity—of such a scene. The saw mill, half in ruins, stood in j the heart of an overgrown pine wilder ' ness ; the winding road, for miles on either side seeming, to the traveller, like the intermediate aisles of a tall- I columned and dim lighted cathedral. ] With the death of the miller the wheel | had stopped, and the absolute hush was ! deepened by the unruffled stillness of the large pond, which reflected like the reality itself, the overhanging woods enclosing it—one single sign of life | alone visible, the pull of the caught 'fishupon the dead man's pole which, i with its baited hook and line, ho had | left stuck in the timbers of the bridge 1 It was a day of Indian summer, with out a cloud in the sky or a hreatli of wind; and the intense light which struggled down through the tops of the immense trees, looked, amid the deep shade, like the sharp-edged fragments of a broken mirror. And, amid these effective surround ings stood the old stone hut, with its doors open and its fire gone out, aud, on its long slender bench of rough plank, the body of the fine hermit-like { tenant —his team and their plank dri vers remaining for that day at their re mote homes, and he lying cold and alone in the solitude of the wilderness. My friends, like myself, were struck with the exceeding nobleness and beau ty of the dead man's features as ho lay asleep. The clear sallowness of the skin the face an aspect of ancient marble, and the projecting forehead, and the finely chiselled nose with its ex panded nostrils, and the firm and well cut lips below, aided in producing the effect of some admirable conception of statuvy— the homely circumstances of the laying out, in that rude and deso late looking hut, adding not a little to its impressiveness. And then the height and breadth of the enormous chest of the dead man, as lie lay on his i luck, clad only iu his torn shirt and rough trowsers, his feet tied together with a coarse rope, and his hands cross ed carelessly upon his breast, completed a picture, which accidentally as it form ed a part of the sights upon the road in a day’s journey, will hereafter he one of the most vivid iu my recollection. McKnight, if I was rightly informed, was a Rhode Island man, and has left a wife from whom he had been separated some years. As he was living here in apparently forgotten obsecurity and se clusion, it is possible that this may car ry, to his family also, the first news of his death—(the result I should state of suffocation in the congestion of fever.) And so ended the life of a man who was gifted of points of superiority, which, to a knight in the days of chiv alry, would have been an inheritance no gold could outweigh. That he was well endowed, also, in disposition and natural powers of mind, I should pre sume from his countenance, the forma tion of his head, and his conversation. l*eace to his remains.” POTATOES, ONIONS, AND APPLES.
