The Fair was crowded last night with a sea of bright eyes and faces, happy as fair. Old fogie dam and Young America—smiling beauty and graceful manhood, were there in rich profusion. The articles displayed were numerous, tasty and recherche. The Post Office de partment was presided over by a smil ing divinity who was a lady of “let ters,” as well as learning. She gave universal satisfaction, and “Reform” himself could not murmur at her ad ministration. The “Hot Supper” seemed to be the most attractive feature of the fair, hence we opine that the “turnpike I road to people’s hearts, lies through their mouths.” Sybils fair daughter Toad the stars, and by a single turn of her “wheel” gave new impulses to Hope and tinged the future with radi ance. By all meaus go to the Fair to night. Remember the poor orphans, and, si —Ye, who bask in Foi tune’s Sun, And Hope’s bright garlands wear— Your blessiogs from the God of Love Let (the poor orphans) share !” The receipts last night amounted to between six and seven hundred dollars. Colton’s Atlas of the World. We have examined a specimen of this' Atlas, containing also, full and com prehensive letter press descriptions, and, statistical tables of all the countries on, the globe. It contains 180 maps and I engravings, with six or eight maps of the World; showing the prominent fea tures of its physical geography. The department devoted to the t'nited States is very minute, and we believe it to>be! an accurate and valuable compent’;Utn: of geographical knowledge, and a high-1 ]y desirable acquisition to every library. The New Orleans Picayune, speaking [ of this work says : Probably no work published in this country ever received, during the course of its publication, such numerous and reliable testimonials in its favor as this magnificent work. Every reading man should possess a copy of it. Every pa rent who can by any means afford it, should subscribe for sucli a work, for it will he a continued source of informa tion for himself and a constant fountain of instruction for Ids children. Mr. Glover Hawley, Agent for the Publisher, is at the Augusta Hotel, and - will call on our citizens for the purpose of obtaining subscriptions. Geo. D. Prentice. A dispatch was received in this city on yesterday, from A. H. H. Dawson Esq., requesting a Hall to be secured for Mr. Prentice for to-night. As both Halls are engaged, no arrangement has been made for the lecture and it is postponed—though we trust not indefi nitely. gST We learn that the Dvraxd Eng lish Opera Troupe design visiting Au gusta in about one month. Beef. The lovers of good beef had an op- ] portunity of sampling the Tennessee j beeves, at the market this morning, at 25 cents per lb. in cut 6 of six lbs. or more each. New York Ledger. We have received the first number for the new year of this popular week-) !y, containing the first of the Everett papers. It may be had at Norrell s, we presume. Deal Geutly with the Erring. We have received a spicy communi cation, detailing the eccentricities of! some of the Medical Students who took ; liberties with the authorities in Ham-j burg the other night, which we think j it best not to publish. We are willing' to expose crime or positive contempt: for law, in high place or in low ; but it is better often to pass by the indisore tionsof the young, than to expose them. The Medical students have, as a body, conducted themselves with great pro priety, and if any have forgotten them selves, we prefer to attribute it to the effect of new a«sociations, and the ex citement incident to the approaching holidays. Look out for Counterfeits. The Columbia Sun has been shown by- Mr. King, paying teller in the Bank of Columbus, a twenty dollar note on the Bank of Hamburg, S. C. which is tho most perfect counterfeit ever perpetrat ed. We append the following descrip tion, as furnished by Mr. King, that the public may be posted up in regard to these bills: The body of the letters “Bank ofj Hamburg,” darker than in good note. ; Divisions in the arches of the in the rear of Vignette darker than in good note. On good note, period after the word “demand”—none on counterfeit. ■On good note, commas between J. J in Cashier s signature—none on coun terfeit. On counterfeit, with aid of glass, can see tracings around signatures, as though done with the point of a pin. On good note, the red engraving around “20” is much brighter and more distmet, than in counterfeit. On good note, the light back of palm tree, in centre of Vignette, is brighter, and shading much better. —.«. Editors and clerks will learn with pleasure that to take a piece of tallow, melt it, and dip the spotted part of the linen into the melted tallow, the linen may be washed and the spots will disap pear without injuring the linen.
