ANDERSON RESPONDS.
Drspatch Omen, 5 o’clock P. Al.
A Special Dispatch from Charleston
received at 5 o'clock states that the
battcVies in the Htti-bor have been firing
on Fort Sumter since half-past four
this morning.
Anderson is returning the tire.
A large number of women and
children are expected on the frain to
night.
REJOICING IT MOBILE.
Mobile, April 12.—There is great ex
citement and great rejoicing here. Fif
teen guns were tired in honor of the
attack on Fort Sumter.
AFFAIRS M CHARLESTON.
The most Intense' triferest is mani
fested by our citizens to Dear of tiie
progress of the exciting events trans
piring in Charleston. Dispatches were
received here during to-day, on bu
siness, but not a word was said about
the.pcndinu battle. There is no doubt
about an attack having been made.
Pnssengeis who come upon the train
which left ’Charleston at six o'clock this
morning 'state tliat tiring com
menced at- about half-past four. Oiie
stated tliat ),o visited the wharf just'be
fore taking the cars, anil several batte
ries wore firing, but he .could not per
ceive that Anderson was returning the
shots. The cannonading could be
heard by the passengers for twenty or
thirty miles from the-city.'
The Mercury, alluding to tlrtf rumors
and exciting incidents of yesterday
says:
The reliable events of the day, how
ever; were that about three o'clock a
demand for the evacuation of Fort
Sumter was made by Gen. Beauregard,
through his Aids, Col. Chesnut, Col.
Chisholm, and Capt. Lee, and that
Major Anderson replied lie could not,
consistently with his honor as an officer
of the United States Army, retire from
his post without instructions from his
Government.
Among the noticeable incidents visi
ble from the Battery last evening, were
a number of rockets let off, a private
signal no dovbt, by the steamers on du
ty in tiie harbor ; also the tiery appear
nncj of the three schooners in the neigh
borhood of Sumter, with pine wood and
tar burning for the purpose of lighting
the harbor in tliat vicinity.
The Courier says tint at about 1U
o’clock Thursday night the Command
ing General again communicated with
Anderson, and lie was given until one
o'clock to return an answer. The
Courier adds:
The city is quiet. Were it not for
the uniforms in the streets wo would
not suppose we were on the eve of ah ittle. j
We will not penetrate tins placid exterior
The nature of the crisis can he-per
ceived incur homes. Many a woman’s
heart is throbbing wildly, and the
couch of hundreds of mothers, sisters
amt wives will lie watered with tears.
But though there may be weeping and
anguish, no knees are trembling and no
frees are blanched with fear.
Honoris dearer than life to South
Carolinians. It is better to die free
men than to live slaves. We are trau
qud under the shadow of the gathering
cloud. We repose implicit confidence in i
the brave hearts ai d strong arms of |
tho noble army tliat has gone forth to
beat back the base invaders of our sn
ored soil. The God of Battles is witii
our host, and wo are certain of victory.
