Special Catretpmvlence of the Dispatch.
Trenton, DadkOocnty, Ga., #
May 29th, 1861. j
Mr Editor I proraiwl to “drop
yon a lint; “ from the famous county
~f Dade, the corner county of North
west Georgia- so far North tlm* it I,or
ders Upon the State of Tennessee, and
so far West that the “sun goes down
this side.'' it is it beautiful little conn
ty, with its blue mountains and rich,
lovely valleys. Trenton, from where I
write, is the county site, situated in ■
Isjokout Valley, with the ltaccoon ;
Mountains on one side, and the Look
out Mountains on the other. It is
about ten miles from the Chattarioo
j:r and Nashville Kail road, hut it :s 1
rather difficult of access, in consequence
of the bail State of the roads; howev
er, if the war does not prevent, the
Wills Valley Railroad will he comple
ted as tar as Trenton by next fall, when
it will be a pleasant and easy trip to,
make.
This county, as everybody knows -
at least every Georgian is the residence
of the famous Tatcm, of Dade, or
Dole of Tatum, (or lie is called both j
ways. He distinguished himself in the J
legislature of Ueorgiu in various ways,
lint more particularly as the author of
a resolution to furnish Governor Brown
with two hundred blank vetoes, and
another resolution to the effect that no
new member be allowed to use the fol
lowing expressions: “'I lie Empire State
of the South," " from the seaboard to
the mountains,” and “The Star Span
gled Banner.” Col. Tatum is one of
the most sensible, public-spirited and
useful citizens of the county. I heard
him address a company of volunteers,
just organised, last night, and I never
heard more noble sentiments. lie
told them that his crib should lie open
to their families, that they could settle
upon his lands, and that lie would Irec
ly give from his purse to the best of his |
ability ; that e had but one son old 1
enough to go, and, though lie had hut
one eye, he hud sent him to assist in
lighting for the freedom of the South.
Dade has sent one large company,
and will soon send two more. This, j
ior a voting population of live hundred,
is generous and patriotic. The truth
is. the farm -rs have doubts about their !
ability to obtain a sufficient force to
gather all of theircropsat harvest time,
for the harvest will lie plentiful, but
the laborers will be few The wheat
crop throughout the entire valley is
the finest ever known, and G il. Wins
ton, the President ol the Wills Valley
Railroad, told me that lie never saw
such promising crops in Wills Valley,
ami throughout the whole of North Al
abama The corn crop, too, looks
well.
1 don't profess to view crops with a
farmer's eye, hut all along the Georgia
Road, the State Road, and the short
distance I travelled on the Tennessee
Road, the corn, wheat and oats were
decidedly promising. J made it a point
to question gentlemen from various see
tious as to the state of the crops, and in
every instance received most fluttering
accounts. A kind and merciful provi
dence seems to favor our “just and ho
ly cause” in all things; let us lie grate
fill for llis kindness, and strive to pine- j
tice that righteousness which “exalt- j
eth a nation
I notice some very line and exten
sive vine yards along the upper part of
the State Road, in Georgia and Tenues- '
see . the vines looked exceedingly heal
tl.y and luxuriant.
This is the country for fine butter, I
and it looks as yellow as the famous
Goshen . and they make better corn
bread, it seems to me, than anywhere
else . it may be that tlm brucine a r of ;
those noble mountains has whetted nil
appetite, but I am certain that 1 enjoy
my meals more than usual. It would
make you laugh were 1 to tell you the
number of boiled eggs l generally de- ’■
vour at breakfast the truth is, I am
getting ashamed of my appetite, partic
ularly sineea frieud informed mo that I
was pointed out, and designated at the
" egg enter.”
1 observe everywhere in this valley
fields of the most luxuriant clover.
Everybody is talking about tin- war
The |ieople here are just as spirited and
united as we are of South Georgia. I
hear of no I'nion men they are all f,e
tile independence of the South . they
have no idea of submitting to the con
solidated dcs|>otism of Auk Lincoln, hut
cling with inoroa od love to the sovu
eiguty ol the States, and this great
question swallow s up all others
What argues will for our cause. I
have never met with a man here, or
elsewhere, w ho doubts the result of the
contest. This tin ice armed feeling
must secure us the victory ; but it wc
must bo conquered, ami must, too, sm
vice, let us rattier Isvome tin* province
of Spain, or Franco, or lire.t Britain
ami humbly acknowledge that the old
Revolutionary war was a great mistake
on our part, for how nlucli la tter to
have remained colonics of a great king
• loiu which we respect and esteem, than
bvome the subjugated race of a vile,
. iotestable and unprincipled despot
o-’i c staves htsntnvng the ! vermeil , tmti
/ irmi'll hemming the slave*.
And our beloved Confederate tiag
waves every where among these mouti
ta.us It floats over the lourt house,
and the hotels, nnd from the lofty trees.
On Monday I attended « large and
enthusiastic meeting in the court room,
which was addressed by Judge Hooem.
of Chattooga, and Mr. Culberson, of
Walker. Both of these gentlemen de
livered exceedingly able and spirit '
stirring speeches. The latter gentle
man alluded to the noble and patriotic *
eonduet of the eity of Augusta in send- '
ing so many companies to the battle
field But. the same spirit tlmtaniinates
you in Augusta, I find now everywhere ;
in Georgia The people of Cherokee ,
were ones thought to be cold, but it is :
rio longer so now; the hearts of her j
sons, wives and daughters lieat as warm
ly in the cause as those who live where : ,
the cotton plant thrives more luxnii- j
antly.
I have found volun'eer companies at
eveiy station and in evety ear, and at
every depot crowds awaited to cheer
them, ari l I have frequently seen the
solitary ploughman in the field stop and
waive hisli.it and elieer the soldiers as \
they sped along in the ears.
At Madison and Gre-nslinro'l noticed !
crowds of beautiful young ladies, with ;
hoquets and bunches of cherries, which I
they handed to the volunteer.-. Surely j
this war is intended for onr good We 1
will come out of it a better people, j
purified and relin • I by our trials.
But I must stop this. 1 promised to j
write you and have done so ; would it i
wen- liettir. Yours,
Recks.

Legislature, and who promised him two

sentative did not vote for tie* bill after
