Nothin!; but imper ative noceKsi’y could have induced such n result. The protracted stagnation in business, whit h lias-continued foi the last year, and is likely to continue until | |ieace is restored, deprives the press of the usual means of support, and renders it Impossible to conduct tlie business without more outside means or credit, than is within my reach. In this 1 have 1 Isaoi deceived, and the suspension of j the p per is a necessity. If those in- j dcMed will make immediate payment I i shall he aide to resume its publication i ,-it an early day. The railroads are a most important in. htrument for war purposes ; and since tin* present war began, several of them ( in the Noiith have been completed and made ready to serve the country. «•* five a eorrespondent of the Charles ton Courier , writing from Atlanta, under date of tin* !»d inst., says : 1 have been taking a bird’s-eye view | of this flourishing railroad city. Four of the principal railroads of the State | terminate here, and render'this a great depot for the rich products of the stir- I rounding States. Luge stores and warehouses have been erected here, and j many elegant private residences arc to ! he seen scattered on the surrounding i hills. The city is located in the heal thiest portion of Georgia. 1 see no reason why Atlanta should not become I uue of the great commercial cities of the South, or even the Capital of the t'onfederate States. In the beginning «>i my mercantile career I was uttered a large portion of the t »wn for a debt of eight hundred dollars. I, however, preferred compromising the claim for four hundred dollars in cash, as l did not can* to give eight bundled dollars for a blacksmith shop and a few hun dred acres *f poor land. The property is n >w worth several millions of dollars, and is improving every year in value. At that time it was Inhabited l*v an old man and Ids wife and thirteen children. The members of the Oglethorpe In- , fantry, previous to their departure to Pensacola, ordered a sword for the pur- , pose of presenting to tlieir Captain. J. ; t 0. HB.NHY Ai-i-bs, in a speech of re- | markable beauty and force, which being an impromptu one, we regret we could : j not obtain a copy of. Lieutenant ] Colonel CI.AUKIi responded in the fol- j | low ng elegant, terse and true soldierly j i style : Rut : l’leased and surprised at this unexpected mark ot approval and alit-c --linii on the part of those whom I have had the honor to command, I am. only prepared 10 say that such a gift from j such a company, makes my heart swell with emotion ot gratitude, and in the hour of battle its recollection will give me inspiration, like the smilesof beauty j which hives the hero into the hottest I ot tiie light. I take it, and swear it shall never be | dishonored. At its conclusion three hearty cheers were given with a vim by the crowd for him, and three for the Oglethorpes. livery one knows that Lieutenant-Colo nel CI,A II kk is distinguished for his cour age, devotion and modesty, and that | this flattering testimonial from his for | mer comrades was most worthily be- : stowed. The sword is an elegant one, double gilt, gold mounted, the handle formed into a lion’s head, and the hilt orna- j meiited with the Coat of Anns of this State. It has accompanying it two j scabbards, one for dress anil one fur ser vice. The ornamentiugs are neat and beautiful. It was designed, we learn, by J. I!. I’latt, of this city, and reflects much credit upon his judgment and taste. -*♦* (COMMUNICATED.) Honor lo whom Honor i« Dm*. 1 Having had some fifteen months ex perience in the Mexican war, 1 consider 1 myself somewhat of a judge of the du ties of officers to their privates, and now being a member of the Clinch ltitlcs, in ; thesth regiment, of the Confederate ar- | ! my, some five weeks quartered at Camp | ; Stephens, near Pensacola, and having I kept aclo e watch of the commands of our officers, 1 think they are the no ' blest set of otliccrstlmt I have ever seen |or heard of. Their orders, when given, j are kind and gentlemanly, hut to the ! point; and as for Captain (J. A. Piatt, 1 ! Ids energies are unceasing, and a more noble-hearted Captain never took the | ! battle field, lie is not only a noble hearted Captain, hut an excellent drill officer, and I do not believe there is a single man in the company who would not lost, his last drop of blood in his i defence. In fact, our officers and pri vates are hard to heat, for they seem more like brothers than fellow soldiers. ! As regards the officers of the sth regi ment, throughout, I never saw a more perfect set of gentlemen, including pri vates, for tlufir seems to be nothing but peace and harmony throughout the j whole camp. Seven dead bodies had ht-eu seen, and one of j the wretched hirelings had crawled into I the Confederate camp, badly wounded. I The same gentleman reports that on ! Saturday last the railroad bridge at .Martiuslmrg was tired and burned by the Southern troops, as a matter of pro- : caution against a rear attack. Yesterday afternoon it was reported : on the streets tluv. another skirmish had ; taken pace at Fairfax Court House; i but as we could trace the rumor to no ' reliable source, and the passengers on the cars had heard nothing of it, we arc quite sure the rumor is unfounded.
