SAVANNAH AND THE SOUTH WEST.
Thu fallowing cmumtinientinn is entitled not only
to the serious eons ider.it inn of our citizens, but if it,,
qujcgastkm* am properly met, willnwakwn an interest
in the citizens of Southwestern Georgia for the enpitnj
of the Slate on thu aeubonrd, which must lend to
happy result*.
Our citizens, almost unnided, (jgilh tho exception
of that of the corporate niitiinrities of Macon) have
put forth all their strungth, to carry a Rail Road into
the interior of Gcorgin. That road will run through
a rich portion nf ilia State, and every mile of its pro
gress will present ocular demonstration to Gcor
ginns on thn routo that enterprise among us is not
oxtlnct, and that tho inhabitant* of their old seaport
are fully sensible of the importance of such facilities
a* will induce the planters of Georgia to seek their
own commercial mart for the sale of their prnduco.
But whiln wo ehorlslt tbnt enterprise, in which
our city is so vitally interested, let us not bo blind
to the superior advantages whieh nnturo has secured
to our city. , Situated un tlie most noble riror on tho
Southern Atlantic Coast, that tupineinss must l»«
culpable indeed, whieh ran allow tho resource* of
an extensive interior to bo w rested from horcitizens
by superior industry or enterprise.
Charleston, although more ancient llian.the city
ofOglothorpo, and although teeming with a popula
tion three times, nt least, as great ns Savannah, is
now, at *ho has been Tor yours past, putting forth
her best energies to win the trade of Georgia, and
tn mnko Iter resource* tributary to thecstahlishment
of herself a* the " Queen of the South." Aided
by Carolina legislation, always enlightened when the
commercial interests of their own sonbonrd and Stale
are to bo promoted, she stands forth ox an nrmad
GoLtAtt braving the youthful David to • contest for
commercial supremacy.
Vauntingly site take* the field, and laughs to
scorn tho defenceloss character of the juvenile
Cl tampion who stares to meet the haughty defiance
of such • powerful adversary. But wo despair not
for the issue—“the race it not alteayt to the tteifl."
Empire*, though mighty in their day, have erum*
hied bofore the slow hut not less fatal touch of
time. Cities proud and lofty have fallen to ruins,
•nd if we are to beliove a popular lecturer, mar
ble columns and spacious .porticoes of one of these
are to bo soon in this attr day, buried beneath that
classic ware which Ure* the shore of tho Mediter
ranean.
Our own pine groves too, which a little taore
than a century since, echoed with the ahout* of
Tomoekiehi and his red brethren, are daily falling
before tho axo of civilization, and the lofty trunk, late
the pride of tho savage hunting ground, is hewn
down to cuutrihute to the erection uf tbe sacred tom-
pf", iU spire pointing us to heaven,—the imposing
Hall of justice, or, the gallant steamer ploughing the
waters over which glided the frail canoe of the Abort

Tho great changes which have been mnkingdi
ing thn last two yourt, in the planting interest of
Georgia, must bo obvious to all those who feel, and
take an interest iu thn wclfnre of thu State. There,
mnvul of tho plnnters, from the wont nut land in the
old counties, to the rich land west of tho Flint River,
have been, nnd continue to ho numerous. The pre.
sent c.lpumul through which tho produce from that
section pastes,
export* from our State. That section of the coun
try hiring new, tliu planter* have many dilficullics
to flite.inittlor, (as is always the easn iu now settle,
moots) and their time being taken up in opening
and clearing land, nu attention Ins been given to
t>|H)ning new avenue* tliroii-li which they could send
their product* to tlie most advantageous market.
They require aid from the sen port city of flicSmtc (
to coHi|M*ntlo with them] anti this should he cheer
fully and promptly extended, it is much easier to
secure tho Bade of a newly settled country, than it
is tn divert tho business front a channel tlimtigli
whieh it lias long passed. Our citizens therefore
should lose no time in using every effort to secure the
htisinnsN from this rich section of our State. Tlie
distance fmm the Oenimilgenlo Huber county, on the
Flint River, is about sixty mites, and in a barren
pine district, through which a nml enn he mndu nt
an unusually small expense; tha Innd lioiug nearly
upon a dead level, Albany, iu Uakor county, is a
very flourishing town, nml likely to become n piece
of considerable importance; this would Im- the inesl
prominent point for the termination of a road. The
communication onco opened, would secure tho busi
ness of several comities to our city, linker county
alono will he amply capable in n few years to pro
duce upwards of fifty thousand bales of Cotton.
Can tho citizens ofSavnnnali look calmly on, and
see the produce of this rich section of Georgia pas
ting into another State fora market I It is only ne
cessary for us to invite tho rn-n|M<rntionnf the plant
ers west of tho Flint River, to obtain their ready aid
in opening • communication. It will ho decidedly
to tho interest of the planters, to send their produce
to thi* market. The expense in waggoning Cotton
to tho Ocmulgco will not bo more than one half tho
presont expense, of transportation from Albany to
Apalachicola Bay. A better priro will nnt only bu
obtained for their product), Inn they will receive our
currency, instead of tho depreciated one now iu cir
culation in Florida. A largo portion of the Cotton
received at Savannah, is wagoned into tho interior
towns, at an equal or greater distance than will be
required for the transportation of plunters crops,
from tho counties hordering on the Flint River to tlie
Ocantulgee River. Tho termination of the road on
the Ocamuigeo can be located at an eligible point for
business, tho shortest distance between tiro two
rivers being below tho principal shoals obstructing
the navigation of tlie Ocamuigeo. Tiro establishment
of a town accessible by boats, at almost all periods
ofthe year, must hoof immense importance lo the
planting, and commercial interest* of tiro State.
It is hoped that these hints will mwakon tho in
terest tho subject so well deservos, and lead to mea
sures calculated to open the new avenue of trade,
so easily within our reach, if common exertion be
made by our merchants to secure it. V.

quality ut tiro latter rau*,c.asjt.
In this market, transactions in this arttclo since
our lavt have been nearly suspended, as there is but
a trilling qitan'ity offering ntn decline of lalj cents
per lli tu which in sumo instances »nbs'*quent to tho
last ncroiiiits it extended, nnd nt which reduction
only, there is shown nnydisposition to continue ope
rations on the purt of shippers; under these cireutn-
slair.us, there is therefore apparently a mutual un
derstanding tn postpone further transactions, until
thn receipt of later intelligence from Europe. In
tho meantime, shipments to a considerable extent
cantinuc to ho made front first hands. Tho sales
have boon too unimportant to particularize, amoun
ting only to -ihnut 5()l) bales ofnll descriptions, rang
ing from 13 to 10, though including also a little of
very fine quality at about 13 cents.
Flnnr —Tli -re continues to prevail a fair mode
rate demand for mo*t descriptions, and without es
sential vnrintion iu prices from those noticed in nor
la*t publication*. Since the opening of the naviga
tion of the Hit Lon, it is computed that the receipts
from that direction have amounted to about 0000
barrels. The sale* include common brands uf Wes
tern Canal nt $3 23; fancy do $3 30; Ohio, via New
Orleans, $7 5(11$7 02): and Georgetown nml How-
ard-*t. nt $7 50.
Provision.—Tiro demand continues generally
inactive, nnd our quotation*, especially for Beef and
Fork, thmisli without variation, must be considered
nominal, a* either could be obtained at some reduc
tion; Lari also wn continue nt 1 lal2) cents, which
iuclud-* both Western nnd Northern description*;
Ham*, 12) rents, nnd tho remaining kind: also as
last noticed.
//ice.—The market still continues very inactive,
with a downward tendency in prices, there Heim: little
mire than a retail business at from $1 G2)a$l 75 per
