Gen. Smith himself was horn in Carlisle on the

Gen. Smith, then a very ynuiur man. wn* aolicitiul
by the committee of safety of Baltimore to com

The Governor made his escniie. Ho engaged in
the Revolutionary struggle, anil at its commence
ment, entered thn service ns a captain; ho was in
tho buttle* of Urandyu ine, Monmouth,White Plains
and Long Island, und his company covered the re
treat of the army through the Jerseys—he comman
ded at Mud Fort, where such gallant and deaperato
defence wn* mode against tho British Hoot, blowing
up two of tho frigntes. In this engagement ho wns
disabled by a spent bail which gavo a shock to his
frame front which he did not soon recover; afte
tho close of tho revolutionary struggle, he entered
actively into commercial pursuits and may ho said
to have been the founder of tho commerce of our
city, and was the main *tny of tho commercial lie
terests of tho whole country in Congress for forty
years. Ho for ono year represented tho city in tho
Legislature of the Stnto nnd afterwards wns in one
or other House of Congress until tho fourth of March,
1833.
When Mr. Jeflerson came into tho Presidency,
he pressed Gen. Smith to accept the office of Secre
tary of the Navy, which ho declined, consenting
however, to act'in that capnciiv until some Huitublc

served at Secretary for six months or more, hut

Hi* first term of service in Congress commenced in
1793, and ho continued in the Honso or Senate till
