Castlirkagh knew this. Pitt knew this.—
The British Monarch knew this. Henco, tho ac

Sir.
Tho man who becomes un adopted citizen of this
country cannot be a elate! Thunks to the wiso
laws instituted by tho wisdom of true American
legislators—that moment ho takes tho oath of allcgi-
nnco to this free nation, he becumos a freeman. He
enters tho wide and noblo gato of tho Constituthin,
and it it nevor closed on him or his. If ho vat a
elate before—(which ii seldom tbo earn, fur lave
can enslave no man, he can resist them witli all tho
•fftoral force ho postassos—tho Acnrt ulnno nmkes
tho siavr)—ho is no longer a shier, because ho has
become a free citizen. Therefore gold cannot
make him u " slave"—ul In-ugli gold might make
him a modern " Whigl"—whloli porhaps is but
another nunm for slavery.
When my well-read friend, "Watch" mado the
discovery that Ireland wns an island surrounded
by seas on every side, Ini should havo made niinther
discovery—and tint is, Uiut every entrance to that
island-is fortified, mid garrisoned by British troops
—well provided with stores, amrpuuition, ike.,
nt nil scuauiir. Also, tliat n cordon of troops might
hem in ilio population on every side, from theso
military occupations,at n given signal from »hc tele
graphic stations that indent the e< ast. That, in
truth, the entire country is completely under the
tender mercy of British bayonets—and por conse
quence, it is ever under tho paw of the " British
lioh."
Tho "burnings" and " slayings" were referred In,
man ovidonce that the people do not receive the
pressure of the oppressor’s hind with patience.
Nay, they do Inflict a drendful vengeance on their
domineering masters nt times, and make them pay
tho penalty of tyranny. Tho Iri-h should bo tho
patient" slaves," that " Wntcb" would have them
did they not retaliate by all iho means within their
power, on their cruel taskmasters—their heartless
riders. But tho Irish have novor been known to
slay or burn in this country—nt loi.st ns n hotly.
On tho Railroads, the Canals, or other public
works,—the Irish may quarrel amongst themselves
ut they do not interfere with others. They nro
obedient to the laws of the country—shrink from no
public duty,—and should an invader pollute the
land of tholr adoption with his loot, none would bo
sooner sought for, or more ready to repel hint, than
the Irish adopted citizen. Bui " Watch" will suy
these ** fellows nrn go*id enough to dig—will do to
make Canals, nr Railroads—but we must keep
them down I” Yes—ho would take their labour—
but would uot rewar<i their merit. " Watch,"
however, is only one of thd American people, and a
very intolerant and ungenerous one, he is. The
mass of tho people of America, are humane, gener
ous, and grateful. They extend the hand of fellow
ship to their adopted fellow citizens—aud tho latter
clasp that bond in sincore friend drip. They are,
and ever will be, ono and the same.

dined to do them justice. This is notorious. So
much for " Watch’s" statements—which are dia

Tho " loaves and fishes" are uppermost in
* Watch's" mind. I do say that any man holding
his illiberal opinions, it u»/U for any office. In
deed, it is hardly possible that ten men in Savan
nah, agree with him—and if ho stood on his own
merits he would find that, though “ Hibernians"
stood aloof from tho contest, enough of Georgia
Cavaliers would be found to unhorse him.
. "Watch" pulls in his horns, in favour of tho
41 Dutch mercenaries," as he term! them. Many
of them, forsooth, are "our best citizens,"—while
the Irish are our worst. Tbo only difference that
exist* between tbo ckuses that I can see, is that
the Irish generally can read F.ngtisk—and some
qf them can reply to such slanderers os '• Watch,”
who malign allforeigners at first, hut when caught
in the fact, would apologize for their baseness to a
portion of them. The " Dutch mercenaries" (his
oyrn words again) nro frequently unacquainted with
our language, and consequently cannot os deeply

P. S. Bo it remembered that on the 29th of July,
A* D., 1339, an editorial articlo appeared in the

" It la a great pity that a man can find no living
witness to defend him. It must ho very mortifyiug

port.
* " The Irish adopted citizens certainly lovn tho
. land of their birth—but they claim no country hut
America. It alone it their " own country." They
both venerate and love America—it is their asylum,
and they are grateful fir Its protection.
