Fire.—x\n nlarin of fire was given between 2

Mrs. Frances White, alia* Walkinsnn, alia* Drum

homo to the South, owned by Mrs. Drummer, and
occupied by Mr. James Uynn, nnd tho ndinining

Schmidt, and ncoiiniod by colored 'persons, wero
both consumed. Tho next huitsu to the South
owned nnd occupied by Mr. Dupre was blown up.
All tho houses destroyed wore wooden ones—the
estimated value of tho property Is about $5000 or
$6000. nu none of which was there any insurance.
Tho fire occurred in a neighborhood, presenting
dense muss of small rized wooden buildings; and
but for the calmness of the night there would pro-
bnldy have boon a very extensive conflagration.
Great credit is duo In tho Fire Companies for their
active and efficient exertions on the occasion { and
the curly blowing up of Mr. Dupre's house was a

[FOR THE GEORGIAN.]
Mr. Editor;—Right glad utn I, to have nwak-
eded the imaginations of our drowsy community,
at thU dull season of the year, when it is a great
effort to keep cool. Your notice of "An Old Wo
man," lias aroused a spirit of inquiry, which, al-
though it cannot bo satisfied, will givo fell play to
the intellect, which is tho only faculty at this sea
son, tlint can bo exercised without fatigue. I had
intended not lo nppear again in your pnper, as I
was quite satisfied with the debates in the P. 1*.
Club, at their lust meeting; they having conceded
thn justice of my remarks, and boat a retreat, after
a littTo slush nt our tongues. 1 nin willing to allow
our tongue* are sharp, but it proceeds from u sharp
wit, tho uncoiuciou* and mechanical tongue be
ing the only inode of making ii known, aiid felt 5
it is, however, an unruly member, nnd require* de
motion—which, l hope, will always govern the old
womun. I will not coniinuo in the list* again*t the
P. I*. Club, a* th-y appear so delighted ul shullling
off on TuutaluA, tha uiosl offenrive part of my reply,
tlio picture of uu old man—just what they never
Intend to be, if wo mayjndgo from tho frisky air
of ono of tho members, who, 1 presume, was the
prototype of the whole. 1 really do like tlio P. P.
Club, and will not purt from thorn, hut in good will,
and hope they will deul gently with thu "old wo
man," in their future debates. But what urn 1 to
suy to Tantalus, who appeared again in this mor-
nitig's paper 1 If I could understand him, I think
I could reply In u plain wuy, but I must acknow
ledge I could not make out cleurly whut ho mount.
This impression, however, imbued my miud, (after
roudiug very carefully, and with deep attention,
his communication twice over,) that ho meant an
apology, fur being so much frightened in Id* dream,
ms nearly to drown liinuwif, at what was very harm
less. His punt uro so numerous, aiid his allusion,*
so distant, I confess, in this ago, of " tho murch of
intellect," /cannot understand tho point of them—
which in an old woman is excusable—for I am not
ashnmed to suy, 1 never was tuught Latin, or even
tho modern language of French—out had a plain
education in English, with n little music and draw
ing, for my own mnusemunt, and nut for show.—
Therefore, if 1 do not reply to Tantal is. a* fully as
liu deserves, 1 hope soino abler matron will. Hi*
nursery rhyme* uro applicable to tho times they
were written in, when witches wero believed in, not
now, when even nurslings lire above such supersti
tious. I do pity him fur having hi* rest disturbed by
such uiiwelcomu sounds, ul such unseasonable hours
—hut, perhaps, his droudful dream might havo
nriseii from n dinner of Turtle coup, or somo such
powerful causa—and tliu distuibiug sounds,
only secondary—and I hope th ? next time he has
the Nightmare, it may cornu in xumu other shape
than iiii old wmnuti.
To tho "old maid" who hns honored me by styl
ing herself my nlcco, I-am sorry to say 1 cannot
claim affinity. In the first plnre, I never had more
than half tho number of little nlioe plants she attri
butes to mo; nnd in tho second, I read your pa per as
soon in the morning as tho young inemburs of the
family mi- done wills it, (youth having tlio prece
dence,in these days,) ami withont my spoctacl<-s, hav
ing my second sight; and thirdly, no niece of mine, I
hope, would challenge u gentleman to matrimony,
—no, n**t even nn old snuffiuking Bachelor— Wi
dowers never uka snuff— they have learned better
manners while married men, ami generally, wishing
agnin t • enter that respectable state, (hereby show
ing, if they are liko thn Fox, they wish to continue
so) do not full into such an idle custom, lest it
should prevent their getting young wives—old ones
they know do nut object to a practico, which, alas I
th- y are npt to fall into themselves. I cannot in
thn "old maid's" communication, see the female
miud predominant—the allusions to Marryatt, be
tray the sea, nnd her disguise, being wrinkled and
shrunk up, duos not coynr the musculiue satire.—1
pronounce the " Old Maid " to to a cunning young
scribbler of the masculine gender, who wishes to
lash ids own sen, under the disguisn of nurs.
I shall leave, the readers nf tha Georgian to their
various surmises, whether I am an. old man. or
woman, as the D-rm* appear synonymous—and, fol
lowing the example of the "Great Unknown," re
main in shudowy dau t—assuring my sex that I
ahull always bo ready to ssy a word iu their behalf

Have you found the cause of thu "burnings" and

I can rxcuso all the bilious exliabtionsapf tlio

" Watch," toenusa 1 pro-uine thny linvo arisen
from an over heated imagination, and an uninform

Him, at tho mmtion of whoso veil raied name,
men should bow their heads! Him, of all
whom tho Lord of Hosts, had selected n* another
Moses, to load hi* country out from bondaga-

The man who has done s >, wherever he teas born,

I h ivn an evidence, however, that" Watch" has
never read tto tcri'ing* of Washington, in his

Now, the manifest ignorance of "Watch," os
here displayed, cannot require a word Ho is in
debted to some erroneous document—perhaps a
