LETTER OF GEORGE BANCROFT.

county in celebrating our national independence.—
Tho old colony is the storehouse of bright cxarppje*

freight-.il, consecrated to' Democracy. Of them,
selves they instituted g VTi meht; and every branch
of it was Kept in strict and almost in imtnedioto de-
pendenco upon tho pnpulnr judgment and will. In
those early days thn magistrates held their office by '
no tenure of life: hut as those who performed the
•’•tty of judges were responsible to the people, and
1?- tiie people themselves wore tho high court of up-
poal, their judicial decree* wore in hurmotiy with
thn dictates of Immunity nnd common *cnso. They
never allowed manslaughter to bo oxpititcd by a .
fine of thirty dollars; nor wore tho litllo barks of
tim first fishermen of New England, on thoir return
from Sagadahoc und Acndin, condemned hy un ur- -
bitrary decision to bn recoivod as aliens. The Pil-

All tlmt is hero guid of Washington by fitr.
Combe is literally true as appears from hi* every
act while living, and tho list of documentary evi
dence furnished hy Sparks since his death. Mr.
Combo could have derived no information in •
phrenological point of view.
Washington phrenolngically described by
Combo:
“ Washington wns one of tho greatest men that
ever lived. His temperament seems to have been
sanguine bilious; his head largo, and well adapteii
in overy pnrt, the moral sentiments and intellectual
reigning supreme. Ho had u constancy which no
difficulties could overcome, and an honesty of pur
pose and ardor of patriotism which no temptation
could swerve nor opposition subdue. He always
regarded his country before himself, and in him
there was no quality qf mind deficient—no quality
in excess, no tube lights and no deficient light*.
He, therefore, gave to every thing its duo weight,
and no more. Ho was dignified, courteous, and
just ; brave, cautious, politic, quick to perceive, and
prompt to judge, always acting in tiie right time
and in tho right manner. Those who sny that
Washington was not a grant man, can merely meat)
that ho displnyed no nnn quality in excess—that ho
played off no corvneutions, but ho had that sterling
worth, that daily beauty in thn life, that force of
character, that grandeur and elevation of tho whole
mun which renders him fnr more great and estl-
