John Mac- pherson Berrien, inbehalf of theComniitteu ofCiti- xens, addressed the chair, explaining at length the views which governed the committee, in recom mending the adoption of the resolution, which hn submitted as Chairman of that committee, nnd rend n communication from Mr. Reynolds, Kor/peer, in which he stated as his opinion that a bridge would not injure the navigation of iho river. The resolutions are ns follow: Resolved, That it is important to establish acorn* inunication between the city of Sovnnuuli, and tho adjacent part of South Carolina. Resolved. That it is expedient to establish such communication by tho route designated as “tho Eastern route," in the report of L. O. Reynolds, Civil Engineer, submitted to this meeting, and in the mode therein pointed out. Resolved, That the citizens of Savannah will unite in an equal contribution to defray the expense of establishing such communication, and for this purpose, that the cot poration of Suvannah be re quested to undertake tho saino at the prop r cost of the city, and to roimbursn tho Treasury by au ad valorem tux, which shall he adequate to tho expatt- Hon. John C. Niroll tlion addressed 'ho meeting at length, and argund that tho bridge proposed over tho Southern chattnol, would materially ob struct the navigation of the river, and advocated a steamboat to run to Union Ferry, instead of tho contemplated bridge or bridges.
